The Underdoggs Reviews
Now, I know this movie will not be for everyone. I expect this to be considered a bad movie. For me, as a movie that’s on streaming, it was a good time. It reminds me of direct-to-DVD movies that were rampant in the 2000s until streaming took over.

This is less about proving that Snoop is a good actor and more about showing what a force of charisma he can be with his unique screen presence.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Feb 8, 2024
Everyone loves an underdog story, as this film's characters themselves affirm, but Snoop deliberately buries the heart of his tale under layers of intentionally edgy material.

No film in this genre has slinked as low, run as slow, or failed to give it a real go as The Underdoggs, as much a sports drama as an excuse to force child actors to curse and pretend to get drunk.

Perhaps, the biggest issue you can have with The Underdoggs is how uneven it can be, considering there is some positive messaging.

There’s still a surprising amount of fun to be had, mostly because The Underdoggs allows the neighborhood and its inhabitants to shine, and everyone is clearly having a blast in this shiny commercial...

It was a good time; I got some good laughs out of it. But... some of the beats just felt too formulaic.

Mike Epps and the cast bring the jokes and the writers manage to move the needle just enough to make a meaningful connection.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Feb 2, 2024
Amateurish and shameless.

If you love Snoop's acting, you'll enjoy “The Underdoggs.” Otherwise, don't bother.

It feels like Snoop isn’t really acting in this inspirational sports movie and stoner comedy, just lighting up a joint, smoking it, and then riffing in front of a rolling camera. His undeniable charm and charisma makes him a lot of fun to be around.

The plot never surprises, and an adult-aimed movie about kids has an audience problem. But as unchallenging entertainment, it does the trick.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 30, 2024
As expected for a Snoop joint, the movie’s comedy mileage will vary greatly depending on your sobriety level, or if you’re of the age where you’re sneak-watching it and stifling your laughter so your parents don’t hear.

The chemistry between the kids is definitely fun and charming to witness, but the non-stop profanity, a crazy alcohol-stimulated sequence, and so many other terrible messages for young audiences make this movie one to avoid.
| Original Score: D | Jan 29, 2024
No purpose rip-off. Hard R-Rated "kids" film following the law of the jungle … look for a weakness in anybody and cruelly exploit it while cursing them out. And apparently to maintain Snoop's cooler-than-thou image, no acting required. Kinda offensive.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jan 29, 2024
Yes, his thespian range may be pretty limited, but there’s no denying Snoop has a palpable onscreen charisma and a good sense of comic timing that director Charles Stone III skilfully directs around.

Injecting Snoop Dogg into the formulaic, generic, clichéd sports story doesn’t elevate it to anything fresh and funny https://www.flickeringmyth.com/2024/01/movie-review-the-underdoggs-2024/

While enjoying something like The Underdoggs requires a certain mindset (or maybe a slightly altered one), it's another example that there's still a place for broad comedies, even when they operate from the most familiar of playbooks.

Cast and production team are first-rate. It's the R-rated Bad News Bears.

Like all movies that follow this tired template, “The Underdoggs” is presumably well-intentioned in its desire to warm the heart and inspire. But it pales beside others that follow the same arc, and really is excessively foul-mouthed.
