The Water Diviner Reviews

Apr 25, 2025

I was not prepared this movie ended up being way more emotional than I thought give Russell Crowe credit though for making his directorial debut and starring in his own role it's a constant reminder that war is just plain awful; no one wants it and when it happens all it does is create more violence and take people away from us all a father water digger sets out to find his sons that were dragged into the horrors of World War I in Turkey to find peace with his deceased wife this is a man that has high hopes and lets nothing bewilder him the landscape and exotic locales of Australia and Istanbul are a treasure despite a bloody conflict taking shape parents outliving their children is as much as curse as it is a blessing a man is defined by how much he loves his children not by his grit or his strength or victory in battle Crowe does a splendid job here battling the odds I ended up welling up a bit at least twice in this one it's very effective that the subject of war is always constant and brutal no matter what part of the world it takes place in solid, well-acted, and emotionally resonant on multiple levels even a decade later

Really liked this. Definetly held my interest. Heartfelt in spots. Good ending. As always, great acting by Russell Crowe.

Roteiro e enredo bons e bem trabalhados, criando bem toda a estoria e envolvendo você. Vale apena assistir? Sim com certeza Nota: 8,5

Brilliant film,a stubborn but loving Australian Father's journey to find his 3 sons in Gallipoli after the first World War

An Australian man goes in search of his sons. A joyless movie which lacks a sufficient ending. The man's "powers" lack scientific foundation so, aren't believable, which made the movie silly.

This film really hits home for me because I'm one of three brothers. I enjoyed it though because of the historical period it treats with, one that isn't normally looked at in film. Not a blockbuster hit, but definitely one worth seeing.

This is an abhorrent propaganda film, led by a relentless campaign of misinformation by Turkey and its government. Shame on Russell Crowe for making this film. It completely omits actual history, the Armenian Genocide, and washes Turkey of all its World War I sins and atrocities. It’s utter garbage and a harmful spreader of lies and falsehoods. It was strategically released on the 100 year anniversary of the Genocide and most of these audience comments are Turkish people promoting the film thus promoting their endless lies.

Russel Crowe made a decent enough movie in his directorial debut, with his acting skill pulling a lot of the weight. Some of the acting from the supporting cast could have been better. The production value is very good. The movie starts out a little slow, and Crowe didn't do a particularly good job of setting up the plot or establishing the character. Things pick up after that. A decent enough movie that has some flaws, but also has it's fair share of good points. A little more historical accuracy would have been nice. A little too sappy for my taste.

Such an Emotional Movie

nicely done film showing how nationalism causes a world of pain and misery. three sons couldn't wait to go off to the great adventure with dad waving his hat in support. then reality checks start showing up. mom commits suicide, and dad almost goes crazy searching for the sons in a land hostile to his kind - more nationalism, you have the wrong religion, why don't you dress like us? worth seeing.

What I want in a movie is, above all, a good story. Something with a beginning that sets the scene and provides a believable motivation, a middle that develops characters, and a satisfying ending. It doesn't have to solve the problems of the world, or psychoanalyze some poor schmuck. This one delivers on all counts. Some may call it a melodrama, but there's nothing wrong with a good melodrama. Add gorgeous visuals; solid acting, and here's a film I've already enjoyed several times when I just want to escape with a good yarn.

Excellent movie. Completely under rated. I dont understand why It recieved such mixed reviews. It was an emotional story of loss and hope. A mans life turned to ashes and then a journey towards something beyond the despair. It shows that even the most tragic story can have new beginnings and happiness can be achieved. This movie had action, it had tear jerkers, it had a romance that you wanted to see succeed, and it had a reunion that is the foundation of the story. Russell Crowe did an amazing job with this movie and to the people who didn't enjoy it.... I say to you.... you have no idea what a good movie is....

great movie, I enjoyed this one and the story it told based on true events during WW1 in Turkey

it is engaging up to the end where it seemed rushed. We needed to understand the superstitions, his visions, and character development of the main actors Ayshe especially. overall good watch

Being Australian I had an added interest in this film. The fact that it gave an insight into the Turkish side of things during and after the war. Fine acting from the cast and a story with a basis of truth makes for interesting viewing
