Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) A very gentle, broad, crowd-pleasing, open-minded dramedy. May 14, 2025 Full Review Sophie Butcher Empire Magazine Despite some sweet moments and strong on-screen talent, The Wedding Banquet’s off pacing and limited character development mean it ultimately falls flat. Rated: 2/5 May 14, 2025 Full Review Laura Venning Little White Lies Where The Wedding Banquet really shines is in its characters, not only in its two romantic pairings that feel profoundly real, but also in subverting our expectations of its intergenerational relationships. Rated: 4/5 May 12, 2025 Full Review Sarah Marrs Lainey Gossip You’re never too old for wedding hijinks or a little tomfoolery, especially in service of a love story. May 11, 2025 Full Review Sean P. Means The Movie Cricket Director Andrew Ahn does something slightly miraculous in “The Wedding Banquet,” by updating And Lee’s now-classic 1993 gay rom-com for our current moment while maintaining and even deepening its romantic spirit. Rated: 3.5/4 May 10, 2025 Full Review Laura Delaney RTÉ (Ireland) Blending subtle gags and quiet melancholy, the remake offers a fresh, affecting perspective on the story, peppered with loving homages to the original including an updated twist on the infamous banquet scene, now tailored for the Gen Z'ers. Ashley Q Loved the humor, casting, and cinematography in still moments where emotions were conveyed through facial reactions and physical expressions. Some holes and weird jumps in decisions between characters were obvious in the story line, which made me unconvinced of the resolution of the issues that sprung up throughout the movie. I was also unconvinced of the romance between each couple, most likely due to lack of romantic chemistry between the actors. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Miri The movie is labeled as a comedy/romance, but it definitely fees more like a drama/romance. The movie itself is perfectly fine but the subversion of expectations knocked off points for me, so just know there’s a lot more angst and stress that you might expect! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/10/25 Full Review Ian Absolutely no notes. From the writing to the acting, humor and emotion were perfectly weaved together. Truly one of the best films I’ve seen in a while. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Daniela H Excellent actors, fantastic storyline, full of complexities and yet lighthearted/funny at times Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Ellen K We really enjoyed this movie, especially Bowen Yang's performance - I am a big fan of his from Saturday Night Live and I think he is immensely talented and so funny. The actors were wonderful with their sweet, touching and heartfelt performances - I even teared up during some of the scenes. It's a nice change from all the crazy action movies that are out now and it demonstrates how strong friendships can be tested and only end up stronger through all the ups and downs in this film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review TBN Bowen Yang and Kelly Tran had sweet chemistry as best friends, but the character that stole the show was the sweet and delightfully optimistic, Min, played by Han Gi-Chan. and not to mention Lily Gladstone's strength and presence as a tough aspiring mom in the movie. as a stark contrast to the heaviness of our world today, this movies gives us some beacon of light in hopes that better days will soon come. It's a great, slightly different, take on the original screenplay, but just as enjoyable to watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
