The Wolverine Reviews
While not entirely devoid of problems, The Wolverine proves it can heal from its wounds to deliver an underrated and satisfying experience.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 6, 2025
An improvement from the first solo Wolverine movie, but still only serves as a throttled version of what is capable with the character.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 20, 2023
... James Mangold... stages some impressive scenes but can’t overcome a busy script from Mark Bomback and Scott Frank.

Audiences want smarter, more dramatic superhero films. Well, now they’ve got one.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 1, 2022
Jackman hasn’t lost a step and his charisma and physicality ooze from every scene.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 21, 2022
This new film keeps things more grounded and introspective than any other of the X-Men franchise films, and that's high praise.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 26, 2022
Everything about The Wolverine feels so ... anti-comic book movie.

Hinges on concepts so outlandish that they're difficult to digest even in the already far-fetched sci-fi world of super-powered mutants and indestructible metals.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Dec 4, 2020
Never absolutely essential, but never a waste of your precious time.

Hugh Jackman is back and even more buff than ever.
| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 27, 2020
The Wolverine is a fantastic appetizer of the collaboration between James Mangold and Hugh Jackman while Logan is the main mouth-watering three-course meal. A vast improvement over X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 2, 2019
The Wolverine being "pretty good" seems like a miracle. It isn't. But it's watchable, satisfying and a less harmful way to scratch your Jackman itch than his last few offerings.

Giving credit where it's due, without Hugh Jackman's versatility, this kind of complicated blending of genres into a Marvel comic story would not have worked.
| Jul 30, 2019
is a refreshing change of pace for a superhero film to directly deal with the emotional fallout of its predecessor.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 8, 2019
Caught in a time warp where wounds heal and faces never age, Logan is haunted not by death but by life.
| Original Score: B- | Jun 5, 2019
Jackman is as perfect for Wolverine as he was when he first played the character 13 years ago... He's a commanding presence throughout and, as you might expect, is the film's engine.

[The cast members] are not helped by the largely flat dialogue, which moves the story along but doesn't much speak to character.
| Original Score: C- | Jan 26, 2019
Fast-paced, the movie is engrossing not only during its action-packed sequences, but also quieter moments.

...[a] typical high glossy escapist summertime comic book adventure come to life. Reflective and rousing, The Wolverine does captivate and the payoff for Logan-loving loyalists does not disappoint.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 17, 2018
A meaty narrative with plenty of depth, entertaining characters brought to life by well-cast actors, and fight scenes that number among some of the best in the X-Franchise.
