Thelma Reviews

Apr 29, 2025

A funny and beautiful film about a badass grandma.

The main character was self-centered, selfish, and mean, making it impossible to root for her.

The device of using the spy action tropes is fun and Squib, and her senior costars, are funny. The subplot about the grandson and the over protective parents grinds the movie to a crawl, and takes the wind out of the sails of a movie barely puttering along to begin with. If Squib isn’t on screen, play at 2x speed and this light hearted little adventure is a a pleasant watch.

A perfect film. Hilarious, beautiful, and heartwarming with an important message about resiliency and the incredible gifts and profound disappointments that come with getting old. I sobbed in the movie theater after the credits rolled. Not because it was a sad movie, but because it was so profoundly moving and deeply human.

This was a terribly boring movie. And why did the teenage grandson look forty something? Skip it.

In Thelma, after falling for a phone scam and losing $10,000 to fraudsters, a 93-year-old woman (June Squibb) embarks on a journey to recover her money, accompanied by her elderly friend Ben (Richard Roundtree) as they travel the streets of L.A. on his two-seater scooter. Wisely, the movie incorporates the close relationship that exists between Thelma and her loving grandson Daniel (Fred Hechinger), allowing director Josh Margolin to examine generational struggles in today’s world – the difficulty experienced by the elderly in adapting to a world of technology and the issue of a much younger generation trying to find their place in the world in general. Despite an irritating score and a couple of seemingly implausible scenes, it’s worth watching for its feel-good vibes generated by some smart dialogue and great performances from Squibb in her first starring role and Roundtree in his last film.

An elderly woman gets scammed out of her life savings. Inspired by the Mission Impossible movies she sets out to retrieve her money. A touching and warm film with seniors dealing with getting old and young people dealing with figuring out what to do with their life. Engaging story, developed characters make this a must see.

**Thelma – 3.5 Stars** *Thelma* is one of those movies that sneaks up on you. It’s funny, charming, and a little heartbreaking all at once. It captures the reality of aging so well—the frustration, the helplessness, and, most importantly, the resilience. The bond between Thelma and her grandson feels so real, like something straight out of my own life, which just made me miss my own grandparents even more. June Squibb is *perfect* in the lead role. You really feel her determination, her stubbornness, and especially her anger toward those awful scammers. And honestly, I was right there with her. The film has a satirical edge that keeps it from getting too heavy, but it still hits hard when it needs to. It’s a touching yet comedic take on how society treats older people, and I really enjoyed it. If you have a soft spot for your grandparents, this one will get you.

Eh. I expected better based off reviews. Cute at best.

A clever concept but delivered in a dreary manner. There were no characters particularly likeable nor engaging. I was expecting so much more. Halfway through I wanted to bail out but persevered to the expected and forced conclusion.

Slow good feel movie with a few predictable clichés. Must have a few fake reviews to score 98% on RT .

Mar 9, 2025

How is this rated 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Very average movie definitely not worth watching. I think the 9 is upside down and should read 68% is more about a worthy score!

Just wonderful. I have worked as a care assistant for 4 years and I could really relate to this story.

I enjoyed this senior citizen adventure. It had good thoughts about life and getting old.

Wonderful little movie. Charming, witty and frequently also quite touching. June Squibb is outstanding. Also thought Fred Hechinger as the grandson was excellent.

Mar 5, 2025

Cute, as well as clever and fresh, and a great way to include a great actress (June Squibb) in a role she can easily play and is full of witty moves. Thelma is cheerful, easy to access and has no age restrictions, which makes it all the more fun.

Mikey’s Movie Review: Thelma (2024) This delightful comedy drama, written and directed by Josh Margolin and based on his own Grandmothers experience, stars 95 (!) year old actress June Squibb (Alice, About Schmidt, Nebraska) as the feisty titular character. After she falls victim to a phone scam losing $10,000, and the police are unable to help, Thelma sets out to find the criminals responsible. Inspired by her new found ability with tech (thanks to some tips from her troubled but loving Grandson Danny (Fred Hechinger), and taking her cue from Tom Cruise, she embarks on her own Mission: Impossible… roping in old friend Ben (Richard ‘Shaft’ Roundtree in a fabulous final role) and his trusty electric scooter… While the quirky, high concept movie occasionally vears off course, its heart is always in the right place. There are moments of real tenderness between the small but perfectly cast ensemble (which also features Clark Gregg, Parker Posey and Malcolm McDowell), as well as plenty of fun situations. The warm humour and smart delivery often referencing the M:I series, especially in the films third act, highlighted by a Lalo Schifrin inspired soundtrack from Nick Chuba. At 98 minutes it never out stays its welcome and proves to be one of 2024’s hidden movie gems. Anchored by the genuinely emotional interplay between Roundtree and Squibb… Mikey‘s Movie Rating: 4/5*
