Third Person Reviews

Dec 22, 2024

The beginning made me consider abandoning this one and I'm glad that I didn't. Early in, I began to suspect that the writer was so bothered by his inability to connect the scattered pieces of his manuscript, that he had gone a little mad. A good deal in, the title began to make sense to me, in that, writing in the third person gave him the freedom to reveal himself safely. SPOILERS FOLLOW: The many situations that his characters acted out would not have been done; they were too cartoonish for the dire circumstances. I stopped trying to convince myself that I was off track and settled down to wait for the surprise clincher moment that would disentangle everything. It did take awhile for me to see that he was living out hs own trials and tribulations through his characters. By now, my forward posture and white knuckles had setteled in. Regarding women, he was struggling with an outrageous love-hate syndrome that had fallen upon him somehow, from somewhere, and I hoped that we viewers wouldn't be left hanging. We weren't. My final ah-ha was his resolution; he had created an unusual way to come to terms with his devastating guilt.

An incredibly boring and silly "relationship drama" with a plot that literally does nothing and goes nowhere...Following three different people in their lives, none of which you are tempted to care about. Nothing at all sticks together, is remotely realistic, engaging. Maybe very good for film school students to learn what not to do... I did really like this critics review however: "A pretentious wreck of a movie that severely tests the patience." Also.. Olivia Wilde is probably the most unwatchable actor I have ever seen.. in any generation.

An unengaging rubbish movie that shows how to fail with a brilliant ensemble cast. Could have been so much more

DULL. Olivia Wilde just seems like a crazy, dull person and her acting brings nothing to this. The story overlaps are all disjointed and boring.

I preferred this over the writer/director's claim-to-fame 'Crash' which, like this film, unabashedly wasted an ensemble cast. However the 'Third Person' is so muddled I'm not even sure what has transpired in the 2 hour and 17 minute runtime that really felt like 3 or 4 hours.

It really felt like they were trying to make this movie as thought provoking as possible but fell flat on how the writing was together.

The intertwining is clever...but the ending wasn't what I wanted. I wanted all the characters to find resolution, not disappear into Liam's writing.

Interesting combination of three different love stories into one movie. The choice of cast was phenomenal with Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, and Mila Kunis. What caught my attention was Olivia Wilde's acting in that film was a surprise. The coldness of her character along with a dynamic contrast of love for Liam Neeson was layered and memorable. I like the idea, but the message from the movie was not clear. I suppose the movie was trying to convey the difficulty of love and commitment.

Mila Kunis, who wasn't even the brightest star on "That 70s Show" far outshines a cast that includes James Franco, Liam Neeson and Olivia Wilde. That's meant to be a compliment. The truth is, Third Person isn't worth watching even if it's just to see a good performance by Kunis.

Liam Neeson is really out of shape in this movie. He comes across a bit smug. I think most writers are. Olivia Wilde who played his younger love interest comes across as 30 something teenager who acts like a socialite on heat. Kim Basinger well shes on the phone most of the movie , blubbering. Italy based Adrien Brody is a good actor but he looks kinda slimey. Its his nose. But his storyline with the gypsy lady and the con was most interesting. Oh yes and Italians can be annoying. Mila Kunis/James Franco estranged couple. She was fine, best character in the movie. James Franco acted stoned. Mario Bello as the lawyer. Always looks a bit rough to me. Too many drink and smokes I think. All in all a jumbled up drag of a movie that is watchable because of the stellar cast.

Haggis has made a pretty uninteresting film about a washed up writer and his Mistress. To make up for a lousy script it´s over 2 hours long.

A very badly constructed movie involving three different stories in three different cities. The director tries to be clever-clever by interweaving them, but just ends up confusing us. Compare this crap to Woody Allen's brilliant "To Rome with Love".

Really rather pretentious melodrama. What is going on with Haggis...? Seems like he's trying too hard to recapture the magic from Crash. It's an incoherent mess that drags far too long. What a great cast wasted...

Can't understand the low ratings. A very well-done, thought-provoking film.

What started out as an interesting, complex drama ended in the most disappointing way possible: without clearing anything. Not to mention the million questions that are left unanswered.

Great cast. Convoluted story line. Complicated. Pointless. Continuity gaps. Leaves you wondering the entire movie. Stupid movie. Lame ending but it explains it.

I don't understand what happened. What did Mila Kunis do to her son? Is Olivia Wilde having an affair with her dad?!? More of that would have been interesting... The gypsy woman does not really have a daughter is all I know for sure. Blah.

Can't believe the reviews. Solipsistic? No; thoughtful, well observed and excoriatingly honest. This film is a very writerly meditation on grief, love and trust and their counterpoints of denial, lust and betrayal. Yes the plot is byzantine but it is tight although you really have to pay attention. All the loose ends tie up, all the allusions fit and all the characters and their scenes add to the overall purpose. Yes, hard work; but worth it. I can only imagine that some critics did not pay attention, others found some of the themes repulsive and yet others just were not in the mood. This film may suffer from the "not auteur" myopia of others. We have polarised cinema now so it is challenging to see a list actors and directors doing something we usually only accept from Indi film makers. Go watch it.

This was a snooooooooze. This film bored the hell out of me. Every character is dealing with a sense of loss of some sort and it sort of ties them all together? Sort of? The ending is really confusing and I have no desire to understand it lol. Didn't enjoy this one, at all
