Those Who Wish Me Dead Reviews
Those Who Wish Me Dead wants to be a neo-western with a heart, but its damaged heroes are straight from the cliche playbook.

Within five minutes on-screen, Jolie reminds us why she’s a worldwide star. Suddenly you wonder why she’s been gone this long and how she can stay a bit longer.

Close to everyone involved has made better things.

Tense white knuckle survival tale that is a total throwback to 90’s movies. It’s brutal, it’s visceral, & it’s just flat out awesome. Jolie is phenomenal but really the whole cast is.

With broad strokes, very broad strokes, the screenplay sets up two teams to identify with: good people and bad people. [Full review in Spanish]

Well staged and designed by the film's production designers and CGI computer wizards. You can positively feel the heat coming off them...

“Those Who Wish Me Dead” features many of Sheridan’s trademarks: the neo-western vibe, a distinct regional (often rural) flavor, and a crime element that plays a critical part in the story.

Yes, it certainly has been a while since she put her full array of talents to work. Nevertheless, Angelina Jolie means business here.

While it is far from complex, well-cast roles and a knack for getting the small things right make it an enjoyable ride.

Angelina Jolie is easily its strongest asset, playing the lead role of a traumatised smokejumper with a compassionate but bitter disposition, and theres some decent supporting work from the likes of Aiden Gillen and Jon Bernthal.

What really matters here is the style, the thrills, the suspense, and Sheridan keeps the pace swift and the dramatic stakes high.

In some ways, this might be Sheridan's weakest feature effort to date but it's also his most audience-friendly. 'Weakest' here is highly subjective. What might be 'weak' for Sheridan would equate to flat-out unattainable for 98% of all other filmmakers.

Those Who Wish Me Dead could have benefitted from a little more tension and plausibility.

an airport novel potboiler without the lurid thrills to keep it alive.

Everything about Taylor Sheridan's Those Who Wish Me Dead feels like it was made in 1998 and they somehow forgot to release until 2021. I mean that as a compliment, I really do.

This is a classic mid-budget, mid-quality, bonafide grown-up movie of the likes that have become increasingly rare ever since Marvel and DC began to dominate the big screen.

This is paint-by-numbers moviemaking, with nothing but recycled components, a few wide brushstrokes passing for character complexity, and a plot that doesn't unfold as much as stagger forward with all the grace of a wino with a broken foot.

... contains all the hallmarks of a strong cinematic adventure by way of Shooter (2007) meets Dante's Peak (1997). Sadly, despite all this, the end result is a film whose electric end doesn't make up for the slog it takes to get there.

Nicolas Hoult and Adian Gillen are truly threatening antagonists; Jon Bernthal and Medina Senghore are solidly compelling as a hard-to-kill spouses; and 15 year old Australian actor Finn Little is remarkable and best in show.
