Three Times Reviews

Jun 12, 2017

Brilliantly acted and shot first and, to some extent, second parts were ruined by the stagnant third story.

Three stories set in three times, 1911, 1966 and 2005. Two actors play the two main characters in each story. All of them sat in Thailand. This is not the easiest film to rate. It looks swell, and my first encounter with director Hsiao-hsien Hou makes me want to check out more of his films. With that said, this is a varied film that I would like to split up in it's three parts. The first part is superb. It looks great, the story and the pace is splendid and it got me really triggered for the rest. The second part is rather boring. It's sat in 1911 and a nice touch is to make it muted only supported by text, music and colors. The final part is all right. It's a bit more exciting, but still very suble and quite dark. It looks good and it's OK acted. In total I must say that this is a cool idea with OK execution. Part one is fantastic but other parts of the film are straight up boring and hard to follow. 6.5 out of 10 pool games.

Amazing. The cinematography of Hou Hsiao-hsien once again embellishes the already beautiful film, like a chocolate syrup-coated cherry topping.

Simplicity In It's Best Form ... Another Underrated Picture ... Another Great Director ... About Love, Freedom & Youth We Talking Here .

Beautiful cinematography and acting but I have to admit that I only connected with the first segment

this is one of those art house movies that people would cite as the reason they hate these kinds of films. there's a lot of open space, it's quaint, subdued and quiet, and it operates at a deliberately slow pace. i'll admit it lost me at ties especially in the 1911 segment but you can't deny its exquisiteness and subtlety. its pace eventually gets hypnotically rhythmic particularly in the first segment which stands on its own as a wonderful short film. try this one out

Love across the ages...been done to death right? Perhaps, but it often isn't done right to death. We have had epics from mainland China and the great action genre of Hong Kong so it is good to see a Taiwanese film adding to Chineses collection. Quite touching.

Beautifully shot, and an interesting point of view

I enjoyed "A Time for Love" the most but the "Silent Film" style of "A Time For Freedom" was well shot. The last segment, "A Time for Youth" makes a good point, with its more technology driven romance/ relationship (texting and social networking) our society is now dependent on.

Shu Qi and Chang Chen acting is ok, but Hsiao-hsien Hou make me totally disappointed with this film is boring and depressing, I try not to fall asleep.

×îºÃµÄ•r¹â is carefully emotionally balanced Taiwanese film nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festivalis. The director of this wonderfully executed story triptich is Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Featuring three chronologically separate stories of love between May and Chen, which he sets in 1911, 1966 and 2005, using the same lead actors, very talented and charming Shu Qi and Chang Chen, we are introduced to three varieties of love: unfulfilled, mercenary, meaningless. The best part of this art work is the photography which was done with such visual beauty "that watching the movie is like holding your breath so the butterfly won't stir" (that was form the Chicago Sun critic)! Even the famous Jim Jarmusch said that "Hou Hsiao-Hsien is not only the crowning jewel of contemporary Taiwanese cinema, but an international treasure" and for him "His films are... among the most inspiring of the past thirty years, and his grace and subtlety as a filmmaker remain unrivaled." I agree to a degree!

"Three Times" is a very slow pace picture based on three different stories and three different time periods. Hou Hsiao-hsien's main focus here is the growing fondness of love, communication, and human emotions. All done almost effortlessly.

Two-thirds of this are very good and reflect why Hsiao-hsien is such a wonderful director: formal experimentation, painterly compositions, and marvelously reflective pacing. The last story does not really work as well as the others and comes off as a bit generic (which I realize may be one of the points it is trying to make) in its tale of technology-driven urban alienation.

Wanna see a universal romance irrespective of time, place, language or whatever??? Watch it. You will be stoned.

Hou Hsiao-hsien again made several films with his unique signature this past decade. Perhaps his most interesting is Three Times. Though I felt this segmented tale concerning love stories taking place in 1966, 1911 and 2005 didn't all work, Three Times is nevertheless a unique and at times masterful work. The opening segment is tremendous - among the finest uses of pop music in any film.

I love this movies very much, the story is simple and romantic, poetic and beautiful to watch.

the three stories are somewhat uneven. however, if i would only rate the 1st part of this film then it would be perfect. included one of the most powerful scenes i have seen and reminds me as to what cinema is all about
