I'll let the speakers do the talking.

I enjoyed the passion and I could see the effort the cast contributed to the art style. I was especially happy to see Shokotan playing her favorite cosplay, Bruce! Bonus points for that!

A delight to all Sion Sono fans. Weird and noisy yet entertaining and pumpy.

Fantastically mad! Definately worth watching... again and again.

Sion Sono + Japan gangs + Hip Hop + swinging cam = Dizzy + Noisy + Headache.

utterly bizarre musical kung fu film about warring tribes in a near future tokyo

Full marks for trying something new with this musical trampling all over a familiar far-eastern genre. Whether it works or not is debatable.

Butterflies in the neon. In a future, apocalyptic society in Tokyo people live in tribes of sorts because the life expectancy has drastically decreased and it requires teamwork to stay alive from rival tribes. One tribe that specializes in girls, drugs, and guns threaten the territory of a poor group of kids. The kids work together to take down the invading tribe...or die trying... "Do we kill 'em today or eat 'em?" Sion Sono, director of Tag, Love & Peace, The Virgin Psychics, The Whispering Star, Bad Film, The Land of Hope, Cold Fish, Make the Last Wish, and Guilty of Romance, delivers Tokyo Tribe. The storyline for this picture is mediocre and reminded me a little of the recent Judge Dredd remake. The acting and script is mediocre but the cinematography was pretty and well done. "Ain't no more lust for power here!" This was recently added to Netflix online so I grabbed it and added it to my wish list. This was disappointing and seemed to focus more on sexploitation than having a worthwhile plot, character development, and consistent worthwhile action. Overall, I'd skip this, even if you're a foreign film fan. "You're some badass motherfucker..." Grade: C-

http://letterboxd.com/zbender/film/tokyo-tribe/ The gangs of Tokyo are divided. They all have a thing in common and that is their abilities to lay down some sick beats! At the heart of this conflict are an intriguing bunch! At the heart of it all there's a virgin who can kick major ass, a kid who has apples as a power-up, a master chef, an obese finger eater, and Kai just a regular guy with the biggest dick in Tokyo. Let the battle for Tokyo begin! Right off the bat, I mentioned sick beats. That's because this whole film is an ultra-violent, hyper-sexualized, epic music video. I think David Ehrlich said it best when he called it a mix of Jet Set Radio (how many of you know what that is) and The Warriors. I'm not normally a hip hop fan, but I got up and started dancing. I can't speak a lick of Japanese, and I had to do a lot of reading, but that music still entered my soul and got me grooving! Mera is the master chef. He's pretty despicable. The guy at times can be utterly ridiculous as well. An unpredictable villain is the best kind of villain, and when he's wielding a sword while talking about how big his dick is then you don't know what the fuck he'll do. Why do I keep mentioning dicks? Well Mera's obsessed with having the biggest, and he thinks that that is the key to being on top (see what I did there). Kai is the guy that stands alone to really compete with that length. Yep, that's why this flick is all madness. I do believe George Carlin said it best when talking about why war is just about who has a bigger dick. The utter mayhem and insanity in this film is also a visual treat. An explosion of color and style persist. It's a shame that I had to look down a lot to look at the subtitles. I'm afraid I missed something! There is very little that I can't say I find visually displeasing (I'm no connoisseur of fine visuals though; take that as you will). The supposed head boss Buppa is quite disgusting, but it's made up by his hilarious act he pulls as the head boss and his ruthlessness. The camera work is also fascinating. Shots constantly flash on the screen with the frenetic urgency of its action, but this film won't back down from an epic long take as well. A fun and glorious flick brimming with amazing energy, Tokyo Tribe is a rhythmic musical with an explicit vision. Despite its violence it also has a special message of unity and hope that transcends violence at the end. Remember, it's not about who has the biggest dick, rather it's about who has the biggest heart. Great film. Good for fans of sexy ladies, tons of action, style, musicals, and frat bros who can't stop talking about who has the bigger dick.

Over the top fun if your like you movies to be random and have no limits then this is the film for you

Hi-octane, a whirlwind of colour, violence and mayhem, though when incoherent it's rather boring, and at best exhilarating.

Easily the best Japanese sci-fi Hip-Hop musical fantasy film about gang warfare I've seen in a very long time!

I liked the style, I liked the uniqueness of it all, even though I'm not into rap-hop (quite opposed to it, actually). The concept of this movie was pretty awesome. It's unfortunate that it also kind of lets itsself down towards the end. I guess it's partially black comedy, but it has some really silly elements, while also having some really serious and awful stuff in it. The final act actually loses some steam in terms of Sono's usually adept editing and story-telling. As well as adding in some wholly-unnecessary CGI elements. The movie starts out kind of normal, relateable, grounded, but as it goes on more and more ridiculous things are added to the mix. Eventually it becomes overwhelming, cartoony. If the tone could have been kept throughout the film, without the editing starting to fail, I think this movie could have been a 3/5 for me. Still, heaps of swearing and violence, sexual references and lots of nudity (boobs) to consider.

A Japanese Hip Hop Opera. Think "Glee", only with more rape and beheading.

It's wack, but I liked it! haha

Heaps of potential wasted. Tokyo Tribe is a wasted opportunity. The central plot was interesting: scores of organised crime gangs, each with their own patch, in constant competition but trying to avoid each other until something sparks them all off. Throw in the innocent bystanders caught in the middle and this had the makings of a gritty and original drama. However, from the start it goes wrong. Instead of being gritty, it is more a musical. Immediately feels like West Side Story but less campy and with far worse music. There is action but it is silly, degenerating into the usual martial arts acrobatics, mass brawls and Benny Hill-like running around and around from one contrived battle to another. Incredibly disappointing.

So... Not as much fun as I thought this would be.

Hip-Hop and Rap music all the way to the end (obviously in Japanese). A little non-sense story, with japanese pop culture themes, but with nice photography. Reminds me a hip-hop version of "The Warriors" without a better story and with music all the way (only watch it if you like the music!).

A difficult film to watch and an even more difficult film to appreciate. This is a huge misfire from a brilliant director.
