Tommaso Reviews
There are bits of greatness scattered throughout this film, and even if Ferrara does not manage to convince us entirely, these pieces, as well as Dafoe’s acting, make Tommaso a very curious film, especially character-wise.

The film exhibits genuine and unusual courage from Ferrara. [Full review in Spanish]

The traits that define Ferrara's best work are present and precise...a mixture of the mundane and the otherworldly, the physical and the spiritual, the material and the mystical.

Willem Dafoe is a fine actor and he makes the most of the title role. He emotes the hell out of it, but I sure could not make much sense out of this movie.

If Tommaso was 20 to 30 minutes shorter, perhaps it would be a more palatable viewing experience and would feel less meandering.

That's the nature of Ferrara's world; a world where pleasure and pain can't stay apart from each other.

Ferrara and Dafoe have together been slowly building up an ongoing miniature Human Comedy in the shadows.

A Ferrara's drama with a moderate performance from Dafoe, shot in an evident documentary style, but which in the long term is swept away by a narrative as empty as the streets of Rome at midnight. [Full review in Spanish]

A film that works like a mirror: the director watch himself in an audiovisual work like a therapy itself. [Full review in Spanish]

A sad, but above all beautiful movie. [Full review in Spanish]

Like the screen personas of Ferrara and Dafoe themselves, Tommaso draws you in with a kind of cool friendliness that verges on the distrustful or psychotic.

With Ferrara's films we are always confronted with surprising changes, and scenes out of the ordinary [Full Review in Spanish]

Although the drama Tommaso is elevated by the terrific talent of star Willem Dafoe, too much of the movie is unfocused and self-indulgent, and it's far from being one of [Abel] Ferrara's best films.

A slow and unerring film with an impeccable story and performances. [Full review in Spanish]

Willem Dafoe's performance breathes life into this semi-autobiographical film.

a portrait told in broad strokes that are sometimes too broad, but more often than not find some real power and insight in the details in-between

[I]n its execution, the film haphazardly makes a brilliant point about the price of reinventing yourself without first learning empathy.

No '8 1/2,' but it has its points of interest, even if as a whole it's as frustrating as its title character.
