Triumph of the Will Reviews

As a document of the allure of demonic power, it must be seen and shuddered at.

I don't know if it is a major work of documentary cinema, but of course, Riefenstahl frames it with a formal virtuosity that manages to captivate me for its compositional care, despite the reprehensible propaganda diatribes. Full review in Spanish

The movie is the embodiment of an evil and destructive philosophy, but it must remain accessible for both new filmmakers and students of history, especially if it inspires them to contemplate the moral limits of their respective fields.

That Triumph of the Will is a great propaganda film, there is no doubt, and various surveys have named it so. But I doubt that anyone not already a Nazi could be swayed by it.

Making a supreme effort to put aside the socio-ethical considerations this is, in purely cinematic terms, incredible filmmaking.

Nazis or no, two hours of marching and speechifying is pretty damn dull; maybe this is what they mean by "the banality of evil."

Leni Riefenstahl's infamous masterwork sits with The Birth of a Nation in the pantheon's "outcast unclean" section.

| Feb 17, 2016

The result is a film that is simultaneously monotonous and horrifying -- a historically important but artistically bereft fascist "industrial," a movie that, despite its almost constantly tracking camerawork, is stillborn.

The most famous and infamous propaganda film of all time is revealing for its stern depiction of the way Hitler's Germany sought to present itself to its own countrymen and to the outside world.

One of the most boring films ever made.

Technically brilliant, and still one of the most disturbing pieces of propaganda around.

The grandather of documentaries still shines after all these years.

As sickening as it might be to watch, it's this alternate point of view that is important in helping us learn from the past.

| Jul 2, 2003

It's a reminder of the past and of the power of the moving image, for sure, but more than anything we look at the Nazis and roll our eyes, content that we're seeing a bygone era of loonies.
