Truth Reviews
The film is about the demise of Dan Rather and his 60 minutes producer, after they tackled then-President George W. Bush's Texas National Guard record during the Vietnam era. Starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, it's a fascinating watch IF you're at least 40 years old. (Younger than that and you likely won't care.)
In spite of its gut wrenching and the intense frustration it gave me, I love this film for what it does for the TRUTH, though in the end the truth was stifled by the apparatus of political power. And that is the greatest and ultimate truth that it brings to light: that no one cares about the truth any more, and because of it's near total suppression and all the misinformation and disinformation that is forced upon us by the powers that be, true journalism no longer exists. It makes me ashamed of what America has become. And it portends the demise and collapse of civilization.
How does this movie only get 62%? It is great! Look at who all is acting in it, and they nailed it. The screenwriting was good, catching the significance of the moment and how 60 Minutes has never been the same since. So many parallels with the way "Truth" is used and abused in news these days. The stories on all news are picked often to distract you from what you need to be learning about just like Karl Rove and friends got us to focus on the memos instead of the privileges of Bush family and W never really showing up for duty in the National Guard, and "leaving" early. Your attention is held, you feel the emotion of Mary Mapes and others, and learn what has become important in corporate media/news. Relevant to today for sure.
Blanchett did powerful acting here. The plot was somewhat hard to follow but I remember when it happened. "Truth" is aptly named as that is what is reported.
It's no All the President's Men, but it's an interesting story, which will probably leave you with little faith in the integrity of modern news agencies.
Another well meaning Bush administration film that fails to be anything more than good, because its weak script that fails to provide any insight.
Truth isn’t as good as something like Spotlight want to comes to journalism but overall it’s a decent film that tells a good story. The performances are great especially from Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford. The movie starts off a little slow and does the pacing but the script is strong in the story will keep you interested if you follow politics. Unfortunately though everything is pretty predictable if you know the story.
Total Propaganda. Bad Redford, Bad. Here is what an independent review found on the CBS news fiasco: The failure to obtain clear authentication of any of the Killian documents from any document examiner; The false statement in the September 8 Segment that an expert had authenticated the Killian documents when all he had done was authenticate one signature from one document used in the Segment; The failure of 60 Minutes Wednesday management to scrutinize the publicly available, and at times controversial, background of the source of the documents, retired Texas Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Bill Burkett; The failure to find and interview the individual who was understood at the outset to be Lieutenant Colonel Burkett's source of the Killian documents, and thus to establish the chain of custody; The failure to establish a basis for the statement in the Segment that the documents "were taken from Colonel Killian's personal files"; The failure to develop adequate corroboration to support the statements in the Killian documents and to carefully compare the Killian documents to official TexANG records, which would have identified, at a minimum, notable inconsistencies in content and format; The failure to interview a range of former National Guardsmen who served with Lieutenant Colonel Killian and who had different perspectives about the documents; The misleading impression conveyed in the Segment that Lieutenant Strong had authenticated the content of the documents when he did not have the personal knowledge to do so; The failure to have a vetting process capable of dealing effectively with the production speed, significance and sensitivity of the Segment; and The telephone call prior to the Segment's airing by the producer of the Segment to a senior campaign official of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry â" a clear conflict of interest â" that created the appearance of a political bias. Once questions were raised about the September 8 Segment, the reporting thereafter was mishandled and compounded the damage done. Among the more egregious shortcomings during the Aftermath were: The strident defense of the September 8 Segment by CBS News without adequately probing whether any of the questions raised had merit; Allowing many of the same individuals who produced and vetted the by-then controversial September 8 Segment to also produce the follow-up news reports defending the Segment; The inaccurate press statements issued by CBS News after the broadcast of the Segment that the source of the documents was "unimpeachable" and that experts had vouched for their authenticity; The misleading stories defending the Segment that aired on the CBS Evening News after September 8 despite strong and multiple indications of serious flaws; The efforts by 60 Minutes Wednesday to find additional document examiners who would vouch for the authenticity of the documents instead of identifying the best examiners available regardless of whether they would support this position; and Preparing news stories that sought to support the Segment, instead of providing accurate and balanced coverage of a raging controversy.
2018-11-19 This is kind of a weird story for me. I guess it's going to tell people that the most important thing is the truth, and they even lost their career for spreading the truth to people. However, this movie is not encouraging in the end ..
Cate Blanchett at her finest. Loved the emotional rawness she showed here. A compelling story that I was hearing about for the first time.
Object lesson in truth-telling - and it seems those of most political stripes nowadays - to avoid doing so at any cost
Great acting and great story. After some research, learning that this is closer to the truth than what we saw on CBS as well as right-wing extremists, I have figured it out. The documents were never the issue - the calls and other evidence shown the truth. But the right-wing media is great at changing the focus and staying on it forever. The "liberal" or "progressive media" are willing to admit mistakes in detail - which the right uses against them. The right is always right, no matter what. The progressive media - which may be right or left - is weak because it admits that nothing is iron-clad. This isn't what journalists were trained to do since the first School of Journalism was founded in Columbia, Missouri over a century ago. Instead groups of people, claiming to be journlalists with no agenda other than the truth. The law firm CBS asked to look into the issue in this movie was controlled by the Republican party, and it had a POV of it's own: that CBS was a liberal media organization out to get President George Bush. Yet their own report showed there was no political bias in the reporting. And more importantly, Mary Mapes won multiples awards for her 60 Minutes Report on Abu Grave. CBS fired her - if they had to sacrifice anyone with a firing, it will be the woman, and it was. Of course, despite her award-winning journalism. And now I understand why Dan Rather is on Sirius Radio - no one can tell him what to say or do ever. Most importantly - despite the war against a few documents, the investigative journalists proved independently that what was said in them was an accurate picture of history. That's what matters. Of course, in Texas, the truth rarely matters -- think JFK and LBJ.
Pretty good movie. Amidst conflicting stories of the truth and fairly formulaic storytelling, the film is carried by compelling depictions of the reporting conducted in this story and strong performances from its cast, especially Blanchett.
A storyline and cast with a lot of potential, but the character development and lack of flow between scenes left me wanting. Blanchett delivers a really strong performance, but its not enough to lift the film as a whole.
Cheesy liberal Hollywood spin trying to legitimize the lies and fraud deliberately committed by CBS news. The spin of the script is to suggest that the Truth is more complicated than it appears. It's not.
