Twist of Faith Reviews

Mar 23, 2019

Before the Academy Award winner "Spotlight", this disturbing documentary seems to have first brought up the revelation as the therapeutic form's main focus for exposing the sinful corruption and how it expands on the abusive subject matter from the personal relations being negatively affected by impacted mental scars which continuously grow by little due to injustice that the film seeks to resolve and spread out as a warning. About as bad a documentary as can be made. While I feel awful that this man was possibly abused, nothing he did made me feel he was a good parent or even human being. I'm terrified for this man's kids. His parenting is atrocious. Genuinely the worst documentary I have ever seen. I am shocked by the reviews.

Kirby Dick brings light to a very serious issue. Overall I think it was a bit narrow and could have featured a wider array of criminals rather than focus on the story of one and his victim.

The worst thing about glass houses is the lack of privacy.

I really like that they made a documentary about this, because this is a topic that needs to be talked about. However, the documentary itself didn't really answer any of my questions, was put together in a somewhat disjointed matter, didn't tell any sort of coherent story or create a solid enough atmosphere, and the ending was an abrupt transition away from what they were trying to say at the beginning. Obviously with a documentary you can't craft an ending the way you can in fiction, but it felt like the entire thing was dropped but they pretended it wasn't. Disappointing, because I was fascinated by the subject material.

It works as a companion to the horrifying documentary 'Deliver Us From Evil'. That film, while it dealt with the emotional toll it took on families and their personal rage at those responsible, was more about the environment in the Catholic Church that allowed this type of rampant abuse to occur and remain secret for so long. 'Twist of Faith' is entirely about the personal cost of sexual abuse on the victims. It never goes away, and its arguable that it may never really get better. The toll it takes on this mans family life, his sexual relationship with his wife, his interaction with other people, his religious faith, and every day moments is astronomical. Director Kirby Dick wisely keeps the focus on the people and lets them talk and tell the story. Its unbelievably sad and infuriating that this Priest could destroy so many lives . . . and not just those he abused but the loved ones of the victims as well.

This isn't easy material, but man, it is definitely worth watching. The evil power religion has over these communities is chilling. Tony, you are a brave man.

Lo revelado el lunes pasado por Informe Especial demostró tener tanta "sangre en el ojo" como la tiene este documental gringo. Altura de miras en este tipo de temas, por favor. http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/twist-of-faith/

Damning indictment of the child abuse coverups by the Catholic Church.

Moving온라인카지노추천 documentery. Disturbing stuff but very interesting. Some of the statments made are to ridiculous to believe. See along with Deliver Us From Evil although both have unfortunatly clever titles.

he is my neighbor and very nice

The basic reveal of moving your family in only five houses down from the priest that sexually abused you as a child is haunting enough, but this documentary brings up a lot of unexpected questions and correctly points its aim at the Catholic church's hypocrisy and refusal to acknowledge its own sins; no matter the scarring, soul-devouring effects on even the most devout believers.

Since 1950, there have been 11750 reported cases of children who were abused by 5148 priests in the United States. This docu is well done. It feels like watching those realitee shows, but this one is deep.

Not my favorite of Kirby Dick's film but it wasn't half bad

Good Oscar nominated documentary about a man that was molested by a priest and now, after all the years of having to live with the nightmares, finally confronts his past. I liked the way it had footage of the priest being questioned throughout the film, but as the film progressed that idea was used less and sort of disappeared. It was tough to watch because the man was so affected by the situation. But for some reason, I felt there was stuff missing, like it wasn't really complete. I don't really know how to describe it. But I'm really interested in seeing Deliver us From Evil now.

This is very emotional...

Twist of Faith is an HBO documentary about a man's recovery from sexual abuse perpetrated by his childhood priest. The doc explores how the Catholic church continues to re-abuse by refusing to take responsibility for the actions of their clergy. Further, Twist of Faith shows how spouses and children become colaterally injured by the abuse. In the end, this documentary is about the painful and awkward recovery of a troubled man. From my perspective we see how difficult this sort of process becomes when we try and make sense of our traumas on our own.

Decent Doc, with Jeff Anderson in it.

Veteran documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick provides a focused look at child molestation perpetrated by Catholic priests and the associated cover-up by the church hierarchy in TWIST OF FAITH. Telling a true story, Toledo firefighter Tony Comes is the film's movingly blunt subject. At age 14, a priest and religion teacher in his school began to abuse him, as well as a host of other boys. Tony admitted the abuse to his family, but chose to move on with his life--until years later when he moved to a new neighborhood and discovered his abuser living only five houses away. Unleashing his buried rage, Tony sues both the former priest and the church. The guilt, hatred, and desire for revenge tear Tony apart. He questions his relationship with the church and its ideals, which had always provided the moral basis of his life. He has problems relating to his family and friends--arguing with lifelong friends over the church's role in his abuse, arguing with his mother over her response to his lawsuit, and arguing with his wife over his anger and depressive withdrawal from life. Painful subject to explore, but an important one to bring to more people's attention. The lifelong impact of Comes' abuse is effectively portrayed in this film, and one I can relate to all to well. MURDERBALL is an inspiring documentary, which proves that physical limitations are no match for the human spirit. For the determined quadriplegic men who participate in the dangerous sport of "quad rugby," it's more than just a game: it's a chance to prove themselves in a much bigger way. With armored wheelchairs and enough macho energy to overcome any challenge, the players engage in a violently physical game. Although I didn't find this film gripping, it was enlightening. As with most people I was unfamiliar with this sport and some of the challenges quadriplegic people go thru.

Again, let me start off my apologizing for both the out of orderness of everything, as well as the crappy grainy/blurry photos. I did the best I could with them. :) The fourth day was the best days for films. It started off with an all-star cast in PRETTY PERSUASION. Evan Rachel Wood stars as Kimberly Joyce, who fakes, along with two friends, sexual abuse by one of their teachers. Also in the film is the superb James Woods (who I normally dont care for), Jane Krakowski, Selma Blair, and Ron Livingston. Its a lot like HEATHERS, and while not as good, its still hilarious, and well written and never really goes too far, like Id read beforehand. A- James Woods taking a photo of the director. Evan Rachel Wood behind them, and you can kind of make out Jane Krawkowsi on the right. Next was the first, and only panel we attended. It was called THE SEX STAYS IN THE PICTURE which discussed sex taboos America may or may not have. The panel included Penn Jillete and Paul Provenzo (THE ARISTOCRATS), John Cameron Mitchell (HEDWIG), Tricia Rose (a professor UCSC and the best part of the panel), Geoff Gilmore (president of Sundance, and the moderator), Fenton Baily and Randy Barbato (INSIDE DEEP THROAT), B RUBY RICH (professor at UCSC), and finally, Molly Parker (CENTER OF THE WORLD, NINE LIVES). Everyone on the panel looked to be having a lot of fun, with the exception of Molly Parker, who looked as though she would rather be eating live squid. Major topics included: porn, the three thrust rule which means you cant have more than three thrusts on television or in film to get an R rating, the differences between porn and art, or art and exploitation, and censorship. They only allotted about ten minutes for audience questions, and that was the best ten minutes of the entire panel. I wish they wouldve allowed half of the time to audience questions. The Entire Panel Penn Jillete, Paul Provenzo, John Cameron Mitchell My favorite film from the entire festival (I think) was up next, SAVING FACE, a film about a mother and daughter who both have very different problems, and both scared to admit them. SAVING FACE takes place in Flushing, which I guess is like the area in NYC where many of the Chinese are based. Wil and Ma live in Wils apartment after Ma was banished from Flushing for getting pregnant at 50 and not revealing the father. Meanwhile, Wil struggles keep a relationship going with Vivian, keeping the fact shes a lesbian away from her mom. The film is just so funny, and touching, and when watching it, I wanted nothing except for everything to turn out perfectly. And I cant remember another time where I cared for all the characters enough to feel they all deserved to have love, or have the happy ending at the end. SAVING FACE is a great story, which Im sure everyone can relate to; Just being yourself, and not hiding who you are. A Alice Wu the director on the right, Joan Chen next to her, and the other two stars of the film. Peter Mullen directed one of my favorite films, THE MAGDALENE SISTERS, but Id never seen him act until today, when I saw ON A CLEAR DAY, about Frank, played by Mullen, who decided to swim the English Channel after being let go at his job. Brenda Blethyn plays his wife. They had two children, one of which died around the age of seven by drowing, and the relationship between Frank and his son has suffered since. So Frank starts training with some friends from the old job, one of which is Billy Boyd, who again provides a lot of comic relief as he did in the LOTR ring films. Swimming the English Channel turns out to be much more about his family than it does about actually swimming the channel, but the film never gets overemotional or sappy. Its a well made, beautiful film that could probably be trimmed a little the beginning, though. A- The director. Six hours after I got out of TWIST OF FAITH, the academy named it as one of five films nominated for Best Documentary of the year. When I first read the nominations, the first thing that popped into my mind was whether the film was deserving. I can say that it is not the best doc. at the festival, but its a great film non the less. After seeing the film I gave the film a four out of five on the audience ballot, but the films been haunting me since. There was also a question and answer session with director Kirby Dick and subjects Tony Comes and his wife. Comes was sexually abused by priest in Toledo, Ohio multiple times while growing up. Tony had been living life well, but emotions began stirring up when he finds out the priest lives five houses down from his new home. TWIST OF FAITH takes the viewer on an emotional ride following Tony and his wife while their lives begin to crumble. Im normally a sucker for unhappy and sappy ending, and while this did have one, I just wasnt as emotionally connected at the end of the film as I think I should be. And the part thats sticking with me the most is the question and answer session, and seeing Tony and his wife in the flesh, while their lives are still fucked up, doing well, and able to handle watching the film and answering questions. And Tony, answering questions, was emotional as well, and began to cry going over some of the detail, and it was hard to watch. Ive never been so moved by someone talking. It was pretty incredible. But still, looking back at the film, Kirby Dick uses some great ways of telling the story, one of which is giving the subjects cameras of their own to record their thoughts in private. It really is a journey we take with the Comes family, and learning more about the religious system is actually fairly terrifying. Ive never been religious at all, only attended church with a friend of my parents a couple times. But to see how corrupt the Catholic system (or whatever you call it) really is, I guess I can feel proud to have no kind of religious affiliation. I dont know, I guess, but it really made me sick how things like that go on, and how no one does anything about it, and how powerful the Catholic Church is. And I guess that was the point of the TWIST OF FAITH, and it came across well. A Director Kirby Dick on the mic., the Comes' next to him on the right, the producer on the far left, and I don't know who that other guy is.
