Two Lovers Reviews

Jan 14, 2024

This is a story that is way too well known to many lovers. Like the song goes, everyone plays the fool sometimes. One watches the movie like one would watch a friend or even one's past self makes mistakes for loving the wrong person. And scene after scene we know the story will not end well… the characters and their flaws are really clear. In that movie is very successful. The problem I had with the movie is that just like in real life the story is repetitive and tedious for those who are not involved in. We see the characters and their dramas very well and very early in the movie , so that after that, the movie just drags somehow. Having said that, the end is a bit surprising. Both Michelle and Leonard have interesting similarities.

Everything works out in the end :)

Maybe I'm biased towards a lot of things in this film, but it really hit home with me. Would definitely recommend it.

This is a very intriguing romantic drama that focuses more on the emotional health of its interesting characters more than their love stories. Joaquin Phoenix's Leonard feels like a little kid sometimes. Completely unable to understand his emotions and desires and seems to blow with the wind despite where it may lead him. His love interests are a little less complex but are still well conceived characters with their own motivations and are just plot pieces for Leonard's story. Overall, Two Lovers is good and worth a watch, but not a must-see by any means.

It's very good but I wished he'd kept walking.

This is quite nice, subtle romantic drama. Joaquin gives a good, low key performance and the characters are interesting - they all have their own issues, good and bad points. There's some shaky camerawork and its a bit slow to build, plot pace wise I suppose but I enjoyed watching it and I thought it was a good film. I recommend this film, yes.

Phoenix and Paltrow deliver strong performances in this beautifully depressive film. Though the ending is sad and frustrating, it's the best outcome for all involved.

Two Lovers opens with a suicide attempt and concludes with a gut-wrenching scene of defeat and resignation. Joaquin Phoenix plays Leonard Kraditor, a man approaching middle-age who lives with his parents after a broken engagement and toils in the family dry cleaning business. His affections are split between the ‘safe' Sandra Cohen (Vinessa Shaw) and the exotic woman who lives in the apartment upstairs, Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow). The despair and anguish are palpable throughout the film, thanks in large part to the performances of the three central characters and the spirit-crushing script. Two Lovers closely resembles mid-career Woody Allen – Jewish angst, New York backdrop, relationships doomed to failure. However, director James Gray seems to bleach all color from the urban landscape, leaving the viewer with a sense of hopelessness, much like his characters.

Wow, I'm really perplexed by the love for this movie. The cast is great, and the acting ok, but there's nothing THERE. The characters were very shallowly drawn - it's not clear to me why the one woman likes the Phoenix character - other than she saw him at the dry cleaners and they are a good family match. And watching him moon over a manipulative Paltrow was painful to watch. They hint at mental problems, but again this is barely explored. Rossellini was wasted in a nothing role and I only finished it because I wanted to see if it somehow got better. Totally lackluster. And to be clear I LOVE Joaquin Phoenix but this was an underdeveloped BORE.

I really liked this movie a lot. It was not a complex storyline. It was a simple storyline of codependent love. You had two people in the story loving someone not out of pure, unconditional love. But rather, it was out of pity, a caretaking kind of love, someone who "needs" love and to be taken care of. The story was told very well. The movie is set against the beauty and regularity of Brighton Beach. It is the story of an average family who has a son struggling with mental health issues and a subsequent breakup. And it is also the story of a young man who meets a seemingly lovely woman who is mixed up with the wrong person. She likes the best of both worlds-having an affair with a married man who she believes she loves. But she also has a stooge waiting for her at her worst moments-a miscarriage, being dumped by her lover, etc. Meanwhile, he is loved by a genuine woman who wants to be loved in return. He does love and care for her, finds stability in the relationship but is drawn deeply into the web of the woman who "needs" him when her married lover is nowhere to be found. Joaquin Phoenix and Vinessa Shaw did very well in their roles. The movie ends rather ironically. After Michelle decides not to go to San Francisco with Leonard, Leonard returns to the family new year celebration with the ring he purchased for Michelle. He takes it out and gives it to the delighted Sandra as if Michelle never existed. To me, this was the only bad plot in an otherwise exceptional movie. Life is never as simple as you have someone waiting, loving you without any knowledge that you are in love with someone else, and life goes on happily ever after. Maybe the story is that Leonard is luckier than he thinks. Overall, very well done. I would highly recommend this movie.

This movie was great and kept my attention throughout. It also had me talking to the screen.

hilarious and calculatively ambiguous.. Two Lovers Two Lovers is a character driven romantic drama about a reserved guy who falls in love for two girls and is cornered in a morale conflict that he is definitely not ready for. It is surprisingly flat out hilarious and not forcibly imputed by any whatsoever eerie verbal sparrings but tiny notions that it is brimmed with and mostly relies upon the stunning performances by the cast. The weaving of the structure is smooth and utterly congruent to the tone of the feature where one may not be able to easily filter out the either one. The background score is almost non-existent with decent cinematography and editing where the only thing that stands out on technical aspects is camera work that captures the apt tone and theme of the feature. As it starts aging on screen the web of deceptions and lies grows wide and spirals out which is done with equal passion that may be appropriate but may not be as gripping and appealing to the viewers as the rest of the material does. Phoenix is pure magic on screen, and its purity is reflected on his extraction of the character from the written words and his investment that he implies on each frame of his portrayal, what an actor. His range is from being hilarious and goofy to itensed writhing performance that leaves you in an awe of it and this time he is supported by brilliant Rossellini and Paltrow. The pragmatic conversation that are both hilarious and calculatively ambiguous that keeps the crisp alive, the three dimensional characters around which the bubble revolves around and Phoenix at the heart of it are the high points of the feature. Gray's finesse on execution has always been its gem that it relies upon and as always it pays off. Two Lovers is a convoluted take on simplistic terms and emotions that it fuels itself on.

Complex drama full of great performances.

The first two minutes of the film Joaquin Phoenix's character makes a weak attempt at sucide... You spend the remaining 98 minutes cursing his weakness. I am glad the loser he plays is not played "full retard". But he plays it well enough that makes it TOTALLY unbelievable that either of the "Two Lovers" would be interested in him... Don't get it at all... And I did like "Her".

In this modern version of Le Notti Bianche, you can still feel the pain of Joaquin Phoenix.
