Unbroken: Path to Redemption Reviews

It has some pacing problems... but I still thought it was pretty moving.

| Original Score: B- | May 9, 2019

There is never any evidence on display here that director Harold Cronk has any interest about any aspect of Zamperini's life except for his religious conversion and as a result, the film is little more than a listless melodrama.

All the dramatic cues are there, and many of the faces convey an eagerness that is admirable, but every simpering scene of false sincerity moves to the rhythm of some shallow after-school special.

| Original Score: 0/4 | Nov 17, 2018

Glowing with effort above its pedigree, the film is an earnest and very commendable exploration.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 22, 2018

When the sinner sinks to his knees, you know salvation can't be far behind.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 8, 2018

This inspiring film, directed by Harold Cronk, is replete with themes of forgiveness, family, and faith.

inspiring movie and how Hero Zamperini lived out the rest of his life

It sounds so simple. And in Unbroken: Path to Redemption, it's portrayed exactly that way. You don't need a whole movie for that kind of experience. All you have to do is read the title.

| Sep 19, 2018

A film of such cornball earnestness that you almost long for the fetishized torture of Jolie's film.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Sep 17, 2018

Unbroken: Path to Redemption's moving story offers a spiritual complement to its more action-packed predecessor.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 17, 2018

Good story about a great survivor. Still the movie needs some star power to lure in an audience.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Sep 16, 2018

Unnecessarily prolonged, and a fussy addition to a film about Zamperini that already exists.

| Sep 15, 2018

Faith-based sequel has violent moments, lots of drinking.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 14, 2018

Worthwhile religious movies explore the implications and the lived experience of faith or perhaps illuminate the reality of life without it. Path to Redemption has no interest in the first and isn't up to the second.

| Original Score: C- | Sep 14, 2018

A preachy, perfunctory postscript to Angelina Jolie's 2014 bombastic biopic of Louie Zamperini.

| Sep 14, 2018

It is unfortunate that instead of exploring the universal challenges and complexities of forgiveness it stays within the safer confines of preaching salvation to those who have already been persuaded.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 14, 2018

There is a happy ending to the story - but, unfortunately, it doesn't arrive nearly soon enough.

| Sep 14, 2018

Unbroken: Path to Redemption contains more good than bad. Director Harold Cronk's stylistic flourishes only occasionally enhance the story, but they rarely impede the telling of it. The resulting film is competent and sometimes compelling.

| Sep 14, 2018

Might stand as Cronk's least loathsome cinematic venture yet. It no doubt helps that he didn't write it.

| Sep 13, 2018

There's something admirable about ... trying to tell the tale of this section of Zamperini's life ... It's also a shame, though, that the filmmakers aren't quite up to that task.
