Charming movie that packs a surprising emotional punch. Bettany is superb in the lead role.

Beautifully written, marvelously acted, and with wonderful cinematography, I can't say enough good things.

Heart-warming drama that put a smile on your face

I expected this to be more of a carefree, funny road trip type of a film than the LGBT guy seeking family acceptance tale that it definitely is. I do appreciate the message and it has a good cast and everything but its certainly cheesy and a bit predictable perhaps...not entirely original and I'm not sure I'd personally categorise it primarily as a comedy. I'd say its more a drama. Its an ok film, yes but nothing amazing really.

What a wonderfully sweet and poignant exploration of Frank, a middle aged gay man as he navigates through a relationship with his lover of ten years and his facing the consequences of his disapproving father and his unsuspecting family. Woven into the story is Frank remembering his first love as a teenager and how his father's influence upon catching him with his teen love forever changed Frank's life. It's great to see gay characters who are just regular guys and not the over-the-top flamboyant characters Hollywood loves to push out onto movie audiences. This one is a gem.

patronizing with little character development

🏳️‍🌈 A comedy-drama set in the 1970s, in which a gay literature professor reluctantly returns home to attend his father's funeral, accompanied by his teenage niece and his incredibly funny and gentle partner. With a very strong performance by Paul Bettany, the movie is entertaining, compassionate and very heartwarming, despite some of its darkest and heart-wrenching moments. An engaging story that should have been given more visibility, because of its important subject-matter and its beautifully sweet ending.

After seeing what Amazon suggested, I can say "no"! Horrid movie.

Great characters and acting

At times cringe worthy and not a fell=good movie in spite of the ending. There are some sweet scenes with niece Beth (formerly Betty), but overall the family is dismal and Uncle's life is a mixed bag. The narrow mindedness of the South Carolina seems accurate but this movie is hard to watch nonetheless.

This is the kind of mediocre, simpleton garbage that I've always feared would force its way into the American film conscience…catering to people who do mediocrity for a living by a crew of people who produced mediocre films that makes people think they've witnessed something complex or moving. The acting was the kind of over the top, no nuanced kind of bull-riding-through-the-China-Shop that you'd expect from Amazon studios; brought to you by a bunch of hacks with sledgehammers and no chisels. Honestly, it's reminiscent of After School Specials…these very basic, no-nonsense scripts that were written for children that addressed sometimes complex adult issues. Except those were made for television so nobody expected more than mediocrity out of them. So if you're in the mood for predictable, heavy handed, saccharine sweet garbage that was written to make straight Christians feel deep and complex for ‘finally understanding the gays,' you should totally watch this. For the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone else would find anything good about this led balloon of a direct to streaming pile of mediocrity. I think I'm just frustrated that I wasted my time and it ended up being what these producers feel was an edgy version of a Hallmark/Lifetime movie. No thanks.

Powerful, heart warming, great acting. One of the best movies I've seen this year 10/10 on prime

A sweet story of people discovering themselves and others. Some good acting and scenery.

Betanny's performance is the movie.

Jul 11, 2021

That's a great performance by Paul Bettany. But I'm pretty used to that from him. Sophia Lillis is wonderful also, again. Strong work as usual, also, from Root, Martindale, and Greer. Zahn was convincing as Mike as he walked that line between good ol' boy meathead and being a better man; one of more strength and tolerance than the father. There's some issues with dialogue I had, and Macdissi is a bit much at times. the 8'364th time a movie or tv show has had some scene with a person(s) being caught doing something extremely private that could be shocking, potentially devastating, with the door left open. Who the hell has sex in their parent's house with the bedroom door open? It's lazy writing. 3 stars
