Critics Consensus

Under the Silver Lake hits its stride slightly more often than it stumbles, but it's hard not to admire - or be drawn in by - writer-director David Robert Mitchell's ambition.

Ty Burr Boston Globe If a talented filmmaker opening the throttle of his imagination as wide as it can go appeals to you, you should give "Under the Silver Lake" a look. Rated: 3/4 Jul 4, 2019 Full Review David Stratton The Australian I'm prepared to give Mitchell the benefit of the doubt. His film looks great, and even though it lacks the discipline that might have made it a classic of its kind, it's well worth travelling down these mean cinematic streets. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 14, 2019 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald [Director David Robert] Mitchell has a gift for arresting and slightly discomfiting imagery, but he either can't, or won't, submit to the editing discipline that would give the film pace and drive. Rated: 2/5 Jun 11, 2019 Full Review Bianca Garner Filmotomy There’s a lot to unpack with Under the Silver Lake, and this is why I regard it as an interesting film despite its flaws. Given time, I believe this film could go on to be taken far more seriously... Oct 10, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) Feels like superfluous overstuffing in an attempt to be cryptic. Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Aaron Charles InSession Film By the end of the film, I no longer cared about the conspiracy Sam is trying to uncover. That's a fatal flaw for any noir. Caron T It was mostly a really fun movie. I liked the plot. I liked that it was kind Of a weird campy, horror thriller at times, but also a comedy and a mystery sometimes. In some ways, it reminded me of the movie “brick” — Probably the whole investigating a disappearance of a young girl thing. But the secret society, he uncovered, was lackluster, and the ending was flat. Kind of left you feeling like you just watched the whole movie for nothing. But in its defense, it did keep my attention the whole time and it was fun and the acting was good. Cinematography was good story was good basically until the end. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review steven h One of the worst movies I've ever seen most of it doesn't make sense. The only reason you'll watch to the end is because you're hoping desperately that it will all make sense and you didn't just waste 2 hours of your life. That feeling will never come it's just bad, it's so bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review g j I think this film is severely under-rated. It has an almost dream-like quality but kept my attention throughout its more than 2 hr run-time. The plot meanders to a vaguely dissatisfying conclusion that asks more questions than it answers, but at the same time feels on point with the film's main thesis. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Peter J This was one of the most hilarious and strangest of films. Garfield is so much fun to watch as he tries to unravel a ridiculous and nonsense mystery as equally ridiculous things happen all around him. Its very well shot, the script is excellent, and there are so many subtleties and small details that keep you hooked. Surprised at the negative reviews - if you're into absurdism and surrealism, this is a 10/10. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Clarice T I really liked. The actors were well chosen, with distinctive faces. The story is captivating, the soundtrack is beautiful, and the settings are always unique. A film that keeps you glued to the screen from start to finish. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Richard W Very strange ,stupid ,sometimes kinda gross, decent acting ,but not a big fan andrew rielly ,his head is just too big for his body ,my wife and mother in law thought it was really really bad ,if your really stoned you might like it Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Read all reviews
