Unfinished Song Reviews

Jan 2, 2024

I enjoyed this a lot, watching on Britbox, UK title for this movie is "song for Marion". It's a family movie, not afraid to be sentimental, a lot of familiar tropes, but well put together. Basically, an old husband, a grumpy old man (Terrence Stamp) accompanies his wife, ill and wheelchair bound (Vanessa Redgrave), to her beloved musical choir activities, and has a difficult relationship with his son who has a daughter. The choir leader (Gemma Arthurson) coaxes him to join. Through the magic of music, grumpy old man recovers his humanity and his relationship with his son. The performances were superb, particularly by Vanessa Redgrave, who was lutterly radiant, despite her advanced years, Terrence Stamp did a very good job of portraying a grumpy Grizzled old man who loves his wife, but has been worn down by the long years of caring, and doing nothing much else, Gemma Arthurson added excellent youth and vigour. Christopher Eccleston did a good job of playing the adult son worn down by his father‘s irascible behaviour. Very good choice of songs added to the tearjerker the writer/Director wanted, especially "True Colors" and Billy Joel's lullaby "Goodnight my angel" repurposed.

Unfinished Song is an okay film. It is about a grumpy pensioner pensioner who honors his recently deceased wife's passion for performing by joining the local choir. Terrence Stamp and Gemma Arterton give decent performances. The script is a little slow in places. Paul Andrew Williams did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture. I liked the motion picture because of the humor and drama.

Perhaps it takes a person of a certain age to appreciate this movie. Tearjerker. Losing a spouse. Facing mortality. Family estrangement. Redemption. And a cast of old people!! :) Yes, the choir portion of the story, though entertaining, is cliched, but the choir is not the key part of the story.

Sweet without being sappy, with the usual brilliant performances by Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave!

The Sentiments Are There, But Pieces Of The Story Join Together All Too Conveniently. While That Can Be Nice, When You Want An Unthinking Piece Of Drama, We Are Never Enlightened Here. I Foundd It Frustrating The Father-Sons Enbittered Eelationship Was Never Given A Reason For Being That Way, Or Why The Father Was Such A Crank In The First Place. A More Thoughtful Exploration Of Things Would Have Worked Better For Me.Instead, It Was All Much Of A Muchness..& A Bit Of Old People Singing.

This film is basically a decent cup of tea on a wet drisly Sunday. It's exactly what you'd expect, it's completely predictable but that doesn't detract from it being touching and really heartfelt at times. Stamp singing Billy Joel at the end will have even the hardiest at least wiping away a tear.

Although it's very cheesy, there's a lovable quality to it. Unfinished Song is cute and undeniably heartwarming.

It's a very formulaic and used plot formula, but there's a good emotional attachment for most of its characters, with some humour for balance too.

While Marion(Vanessa Redgrave) goes to choir practice led by Elizabeth(Gemma Arterton), Marion's husband Arthur(Terence Stamp) spends his retirement either at home or hanging out with his friends at the pub. Just as the choir is getting ready for competition, Marion's cancer returns. Instead of trying to go through the rigors of chemotherapy again, she decides to concentrate on the choir... Aside from its saccharine plot, "Song for Marion" already has a couple of strikes going against it. First, its major attempts at humor come from seniors singing age-inappropriate songs. Plus, the world is really not ready for a super-perky Gemma Arterton. At the same time, Vanessa Redgrave and Christopher Eccleston are both very good in support. That brings us to Terence Stamp who carries and grounds the movie at the same time with his sensitive, yet tough, performance.

This uplifting film hits a lot of familiar notes, but the melody is still a beautiful one. Vanessa Redgrave gets more stunning the older she gets and Terrence Stamp is a leading man still in his prime.
