Velvet Buzzsaw Reviews
It’s an unorthodox subject matter to turn into horror, but I think it experiments well, especially with the unusual, almost comical ways characters are killed off.

Velvet Buzzsaw may think itself as art, but I fear that it is just another entry to throw on the Netflix heap of content.

Velvet Buzzsaw wants to be a satire of the shallow, nose-in-the-air modern art scene and a supernatural thriller — and I believe a movie in that vein could be done effectively — but it doesn’t deliver on either fronts.

This is part of the admirable restraint that Gilroy shows throughout the movie. While he never forgets that this is a “satirical thriller,” he is never mean-spirited or excessively gory.

Jake Gyllenhaal's preening, presumptive, preposterous art critic is a joy to behold... Velvet Buzzsaw is a late night horror. A piece of Grand Guignol trash. Pure and simple. And what glorious trash it is.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 10, 2022
A flawed yet peculiarly fascinating film.

The cast and the original art created for the movie make it worth watching, but if you’re looking for a spooky or campy piece, you might leave this exhibit disappointed.

It's all about marketing more than art, and Gilroy takes out his contempt for this scene.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 4, 2022
It's funnier than I thought it was going to be... It was a good watch, but if you're looking to get super creeped out, it's not it.

Episode 26: 2019 Movie Preview / Glass / Serenity / Velvet Buzzsaw / Coherence
| Original Score: 86/100 | Sep 9, 2021
It's an entertaining romp, but it never fully succeeds in being either scary or funny. And as it expects us to join the dots, the film is annoying in its refusal to tell us what on earth is going on.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 1, 2021
Messy and silly and funny and a little bit disgusting...
| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 29, 2021
Velvet Buzzsaw is a film that will likely not satisfy fans of the art world or horror movies, but the combination of talented actors and striking art at least keep it watchable for most of its running time.

There are some fantastic overhead shots of the city at night and in the day, but otherwise, it is so visually dull, which is disappointing given the film's subject matter. There's that word again: Disappointing.

While the pulpy, by-the-numbers horror of the film's second half has the potential to be something awfully fun, Velvet Buzzsaw's overwritten and unfocused script sucks the joy out of even the most ridiculous of deaths.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Mar 8, 2021
Gilroy fictionally savages the corruption, careerism and vacuousness that pervades this field, including its most prestigious exhibitions, galleries, museums and journals and the thoughts and opinions of its leading figures.

It's funny in fits and starts, but all feels pretty pointless in the end.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Dec 30, 2020
The film leaps over important parts that build the tension or the audience and instead explains characters that don't make any sense to us and really in the end don't matter.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Dec 18, 2020
Once the heart of the story is exposed, the pace picks up and it becomes a "Twilight Zone" style of story.

[Velvet Buzzsaw] metamorphoses into one of those horror farces... the film is most effective the less it tries to sell itself as a luxury item. [Full review in Spanish]
