Victor Frankenstein Reviews
Add Victor Frankenstein to the seemingly endless list of failed attempts to reclaim the iconography of Universal Studios' classic monster movies.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Apr 25, 2022
Both the direction and script feel too modern to snugly fit into the Frankenstein canon.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 3, 2021
It delivers on exactly what it promises...
| Original Score: 6/10 | Nov 20, 2020
[The film] makes the crucial error of reminding us that this has been done before, and better.

'Victor Frankenstein' ends up being just another movie, with a sequel suggestion included. [Full Review in Spanish]

[The] actors made the choice to treat this script as award-worthy material instead of the hilarious schlock it is, and the performances are gorgeously melodramatic.

Victor Frankenstein is refreshingly character-driven and has a sense of joy in its storytelling that makes this great-grandfather of the corpse resurrection genre seem fresh and alive.
| Original Score: B+ | Dec 7, 2018
It's as if the film knows that you know that the film knows it can do better. Or something like that. Probably best not to think too hard about that.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Oct 31, 2018
The whole film should have just gone for funny, because no one could take this seriously.

Hammier than a ham and pineapple pizza without the pesky fruit, Victor Frankenstein fair rattles along as an epically daft but curiously enjoyable gothic horror.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 22, 2018
Settings that Shelley probably envisioned, a cast that is intensely engaging, a bit of a love story, high action, and special effects bring life to a story that was otherwise thought dead.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 22, 2018
It is all good knockabout fun. But the real treat is the bonkers James McAvoy.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 16, 2018
Both actors are sorely wasted, though they each try their best to enliven the lumbering script.
| Jul 16, 2018
Nowhere near as torturous to endure as last year's I, Frankenstein, but it's bland, dull, and forgettable
| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 4, 2017
There is some spectacle here... but the story never achieves lift-off, and with McAvoy eventually over-doing the mad-scientist stuff, it crashes and burns somewhere in predictably storm-swept Scotland.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 26, 2017
It's not weird-that's actually part of the problem-it's just bad.

Even though you know how the story goes (mad scientist creates monster out of dead body parts, with horrifying consequences), there are some great twists in this version.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 20, 2017
It's when the movie widens from this core group of characters that it stumbles fatally.
| Jul 25, 2017
An unneeded shallow adaptation of the Mary Shelley classic, trying desperately but unsuccessfully to put a new spin on the familiar Gothic story.
| Original Score: C+ | Jul 23, 2017
There isn't enough emotional backstory given to McAvoy's character to care about whether or not he manages to bring the monster to life.
