Virtuosity Reviews
While this is set in what is supposed to be in the realistic future- the story behind Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington's character) is gripping and tells his story of tragedy in dramatic form. It also shows us how tech can be corrupted in a next gen way letting loose a villain like Sid 6.7 (Russel Crowe's character) and how tough it would be to supposedly put him "back in the box". Also- Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco makes an appearance in this movie as Madison Carter's (Kelly Lynch's character's) daughter and Parker is sent on a mission to rescue her at the end of the movie. I give this movie 3.5/5 stars- because while the story is great for a 1990's action/sci-fi crime film- you have to admit- there still seems like something is missing.
So terribly dated and dumb, that it's awesome!
Three Oscar winners- Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, and Louise Fletcher- are completely wasted in this high tech shoot-'em-up. Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington) is a cop convicted of murder and serving time. He becomes a guinea pig in some virtual reality testing involving capturing SID 6.7, a computer combination of over 200 criminals. SID's evil programmer releases SID (Russell Crowe) into the real world, and Barnes is released long enough to track him down. He must also drag along Madison Carter (Kelly Lynch), who spends most of her screen time trying to keep up with Barnes. Barnes finds out SID is also programmed with the behavior of the man really responsible for Barnes' family's demise, making the entire thing "personal." Carter's daughter is kidnapped by SID, and the finale takes place during a live 온라인카지노추천/internet broadcast in a high rise building. Louise Fletcher is not given anything to do as an executive with the company that created SID. Crowe has the right physical look, but the screenwriter unwisely gave SID a bunch of unfunny one liners to utter during all the mayhem. A mass killer has not made this many stupid comments since the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series. Washington, trying to corner the market on 1990's serial killer trackers (see also "Fallen" and "The Bone Collector"), is okay as the killing cop. He tries to turn this into more than an action film, but his character is not there. Brett Leonard, of "The Lawnmower Man" and the bad "Hideaway," finally finds another movie to use his trademark computer special effects in. The effects are okay, but are constantly undermined and drowned out by all the bloodshed. The screenwriter makes bad plot decisions just so he can move his story along, not because they make sense- SID's programmer releases SID because he is mad. SID can regenerate himself with glass, SID is not really drawn to any of the other real-life killers he has been programmed with, just the one Barnes has flashbacks about. I thought SID would be like a superhuman serial killer, leaving other real life killers' clues in his path, but we get a passing Charles Manson mention, and that is it. There is more broken glass in this film than "Another 48 HRS", the previous broken glass film champion. Some fun almost comes in the climax, as Barnes pursues SID, and in turn is pursued by the cops for a crime SID framed him for. The film is ten minutes too long, as we must sit through Carter's daughter's scenes, which feels tacked on to the end. Yes, the computer effects are pretty good. Crowe is as good as he can be considering the script, but Leonard does not build any momentum in his direction. His camera is everywhere, but he wastes his talents on a screenplay that lumbers toward inevitability in every scene. In the climax, as SID takes over a 온라인카지노추천 broadcast to kill on the air, we see the viewership increase- one medium telling me how awful another medium is. I do not need a violent film to tell me there is too much violence on 온라인카지노추천 and the internet. That would be like a porn actress telling me women are used as sexual objects in strip clubs. Take away all the bells and whistles, and carnage and explosions, and you have an average film dressed up with a good cast.
Shockingly inept given Washington's solid (as always) work. Terrible idea for a film.
If you told me this was the main inspiration for The Matrix I would not be surprised. In addition to The Matrix, we've seen numerous films dealing with this subject in the last twenty years. With okay action and two Oscar winners engaged in a game of cat & mouse, the absurdity still cannot be hidden due to a few holes.
I really like the part where Sid 6.7 reaches his final form and becomes Sid V.1C10U5 and gets the strap back from Booker T (played by Denzel Washington) at Starrcade. Too bad Kevin Nash and Scott Hall were stopped from forming the NWO with Hollywood Hogan in this movie as I thought this was a documentary and as we all know the NWO is a real life organization taking over the world still to this day, Steak really is a lot better when you eat it with Steven Seagal. Don;t believe me? Try it.
A true mess of a movie that was held together by strong performances from the leads.
Hilariously dated action flick from the mid-90s that explores the dangers of virtual reality that's so bad it veers into guilty pleasure territory. The entire nightclub scene is extraordinary.
In Los Angeles, Lt. Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington) and John Donovan are testing a virtual reality system that is going to be used for training police officers. The two are tracking down a serial killer named SID 6.7 (Russell Crowe) at a restaurant in virtual reality. SID (short for Sadistic, Intelligent, Dangerous, a VR amalgam of the most violent serial killers throughout history) causes Donovan to go into shock, killing him. The director overseeing the project, before Commissioner Elizabeth Deane and her associate, William Wallace, orders the programmer in charge of creating SID, Dr. Darrel Lindenmeyer, to shut down the project. Barnes is a former police officer imprisoned for killing political terrorist Matthew Grimes, who killed Parker's wife and daughter. Barnes killed Grimes and innocent bystanders. This caused him to become a convicted killer and serve 17 years to life. Barnes meets with criminal psychologist Dr. Madison Carter following a fight between Barnes and another prisoner, Big Red. Meanwhile, Lindenmeyer informs SID that he is about to be shut down because the death caused when he disabled the fail-safes. At SID's suggestion, Lindenmeyer convinces another employee, Clyde Reilly, that a sexually-compliant virtual reality model, Sheila 3.2, another project created by Lindenmeyer, can be brought to life in a synthetically grown android body. Lindenmeyer replaces the Sheila 3.2 module with the SID 6.7 module. Now processed into the real world, SID 6.7 kills Reilly. Once word gets out of SID being in the real world, Deane and Los Angeles Police Department Chief William Cochran offer Barnes a deal: if he catches SID and brings him back to virtual reality, he will be pardoned. Barnes agrees, and with help from Carter, they discover that Matthew Grimes, the terrorist who killed Barnes's wife and daughter, is a part of SID 6.7's personality profile. After killing a group of security guards, SID heads over to the Media Zone, a local nightclub, where he takes hostages. Barnes and Carter go to the nightclub to stop him, but SID escapes... The film received mostly mixed to negative reviews. Rotten Tomatoes consensus states: "Woefully deficient in thrills or common sense, Virtuosity strands its talented stars in a story whose vision of the future is depressingly short on imagination." Roger Ebert, however, wrote that the movie was "filled with bright ideas and fresh thinking" and "still finds surprises" despite a somewhat cliché premise. This 1995 sci-fi actioneer touch base with "Demolition Man", "Terminator" and "Lawnmover Man", but feels very outdated in 2021 due to the poor CGI, over the top performances and the 90s cinematography. The idea is there, but the execution is not. Denzel Washington is ok, while Russell Crowe goes way over the top as SID 6.7. Nevertheless, "Virtuosity" is hardly amongst their best work.
This is a guilty pleasure for me. The movie has some terrible cgi but has a solid enough plot of a man must hunting down an elite A I that has 300 serial killers personalities. Having Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe sure does help though.
Wow! This movie was bad. The filmmakers couldn't think of anything more interesting to do with a story about Artificial Intelligence than a creating a psycho killing machinery terrorizing a city. I could not get through this movie. It took me several viewings and even then I kept fast forwarding. No characterisation, no story, no tension. Just the occasional comical, manic performance from Russel Crowe. I wish I could erase this film from my memory banks.
Great watch, would watch again, and can recommend. While this is a trip in the way back machine, I think this going to remain a favorite of mine. Akin to "Back to the Future", seeing what people thought the future would be 20 years ago is really interesting, and what's more is that we've pushed boundaries where something like this movie could happen. We're probably still (2021) a ways away from digital silicone DNA, we're creating robots that are more and more life-capable and could have A.I. loaded into them to run a muck. It's an interesting mix of sci-fi, action, and true crime style entertainment that I think should hold interest for most audiences.
This one was definitely more a case of me having a great time watching versus arguing this is a quality film. What comes off today as a cheap and dated feeling sci-fi aesthetic, actually works perfectly for this totally off the wall, futuristic plot with a memorably insane performance from Russell Crowe.
5 bags, Gary W. below was correct when he stated that "the villain in this movie rivals the villain in Terminator 2." Man it was damn good, Denzel v. Crowe! We watched it and were like "how have we never heard of this thing or the director?" We were on the edge of seats or at least are shoulders were. We were definitely ready to stand up and leave, I mean give a standing ovation at the end finally. I mean when it ended so thrillingly. More evidence that Crowe turns bad only behind the wheel. Let the guy ride a bike or something, or just a horse. Or sail a ship to go places. Or at least drive a big old truck. It was great, nice 'stache for Forsythe
This film is so underrated. Very enjoyable SciFi film that was largely ignored and badly reviewed. Russell Crowe is fantastic!
Story/Screenplay: (4/5) Cool in concept, it was an interesting sci-fi action story with a few plot holes, although these weren't big enough that they couldn't be ignored. Duration/Tempo: (3.5/5) At 1 hour and 46 minutes, it's an average length movie that felt about the same. Action scenes were numerous and well done. Good direction. Cast & Crew: (4/5) Watching Russell Crowe as a psychopath is new, but he was exceptional in this role. Denzel Washington was excellent, while Kelly Lynch's performance was memorable. Summary: (4/5) The story and cast were very good, and the film didn't feel long. A thumbs up.
All was going so-so until you come to the implausible conclusion. The writers found themselves with their backs against the wall and decided to just toss in anything to end the movie. Anything. What a waste of some good acting talents here. Bet they shrugged all the way to the bank.
Great action movie. Fun performances from Denzel & Crowe. I wish it did better in theaters & that people liked it more. Underrated action film that got swept under the rug.
Rotten Tomatoes launched in summer 1998. That year many a great movie shifted consciousness towards higher levels such as The American History X, The Big Lebowski, Mulan, Blade, Pleasantville, Belly, Ringu, and yes Wild Things then in 1999 we got The Matrix. This history bit is to reveal that many movies prior to 1998 may have fallen under the radar. A film that didn't have that big of a budget became almost invisible as far as review sites go. I meet people everyday and most have never even heard of Virtuosity. So idc what Rotten Tomatoes rates this movie because it's really good. Great cast and I actually own it on DVD. SPOILER ALERTS(so watch the movie already) Sure Denzel WA and Russell C. were not huge Stars at that point but they were above average and had a solid fanbase. This movie didn't have any exotic locations and was literally filmed around the LA area. This fact which makes sense because the setting a futuristic Los Angeles. Yes this is a good movie. There is action, amazing visual fx for the time, great special fx, solid story that keeps you wanting more, good characters that have flaws and fit well with the pace, suspense and it foreshadows our current world of virtual reality and realism with electronic gaming. We got Nintendo Wii and Xbox Move and Playstation Kinect that all involves a hands on virtual presence of gaming. Yes you should watch "Virtuosity(1995)" not once, not twice, but three times within a 3 week period. You can even watch it with different people and then talk about the movie afterwards. I can't get over how within the movie you see Denzel have a makeover going from wrongfully accused inmate to reinstated future cop protector of the innocent and enforcer of the law. And I like how the future looks very similar to our present so it's not so far removed stylistically. I'll admit Denzel is in a million cop movies, but what other excuse can you get to chase and shoot people then flip your badge when you need to. In this instance I would deem it acceptable when you have a serial killer with multiple personalities of other serial killers on the loose in one of the heaviest populated cities in the country. Parker Barnes(Denzel) is an anti-hero who is pretty optimistic all things considered. I love the fact that he is very flawed and uses crayon doodling as therapy. What Denzel does best is plays a controversial character that does the best he knows how yet does it smoothly. High emotional content really gets you to feel and empathize. The score is pretty good as well and the films editing which is what really captivated me aside from the story. Now let's talk about S.I.D.(Sadistically Intelligent and Dangerous)6.7 (Russell)who is the complex villain from a computer program and is now an android what we call reality free to do whatever he wants. He is nasty and can kills people for sport and is really what we all are a big kid. S.I.D. 6.7 wanted was attention and Parker knew that was the way to beat him. It's funny that our desires are also our weakness. We even have a lil feature of MMA before it became as popular as it has now. Lots of cold-blooded murder, yet what do you expect from a sci-fi crime drama. We are talking about a bad guy that is really a bad guy. His design is to destroy and torture people like a game. Oh and bullets won't stop him. Nowadays we have bad guys that have a conscience and can change their mind but programs don't have that concept or ability even if they are artificial intelligence, intelligence is intelligence artificial or not. Love the tagline "Justice Needs A New Program". Another part of the reason why I enjoy this movie is because not that many people know about it. It's like my own secret that I can share with the world. I first saw this movie when I was in 5th grade and I watch it as an adult gather new insights and it's just as enjoyable if not more. Many movies you guessed it have a forced love story. Those movies try and squeeze it in. Like oh we can reach a wider audience with this. Yea not so much. Thankfully this was not the case it was natural and didn't try to be anything that it wasn't. Kelly Lynch plays Madison Carter a not too shabby looking therapist tags along and plays babysitter. She is a professional in the Mental Health field and provides tons of insights to the investigation of tracking down someone who can kill and charm in the snap of his finger. Between Madison and Parker it's very professional/intimate working partner relationship and the movie could have taken it there but they didn't which is cool and believable especially since Parker was in prison and may have wanted a lil female luvin yet you see the range of what relationships can be in this movie. Why can't you cuddle and be friends not like this happened in the movie but thats beside the point. Denzel was a father figure to Madison Carter's cut little daughter Karin played by Kaley Cuoco in her film debut! There is such a range of acting and emotion and also themes in this movie. There are comedic moments and very serious moments that keep you guessing. I think every film should have comedic moments. so only 30 reviews? That's like a classroom of 5th graders all putting in a vote and only 10 of them gave a good review. Maybe those kids were the legit ones that will actually contribute to the benefit of others. So try me. Watch this movie and if you think it deserves a 4.3 out of 10 so be it. Won't change my mind or anyone else that voted exactly the same way I did. This will always be in my top 5 and I don't know why I have not wrote a quality review on this film yet. One of my favorite quotes is in the Prison Fight scene and heavily tatted racist white dude yells "Who wants dark meat?!!" while holding a sharp knife-like object. following Denzel says one of his famous lines after he disarms his attacker "Pick it up, c'mon pick it up!" He also says that in "Magnificent 7(2016)" and I don't think I'll be giving that movie a rating but I would recommend watching it after you watch this movie, Chris Pratt is solid! Take care of your movie watching and catch you on the flipside!
