W.E. Reviews

Jan 20, 2025

Oh, come on. I read the earliest reviews and what rubbish. Those critics are paid to be assholes. Nonetheless, I watched this beautiful movie today. It was well written, well paced, surprising, eloquent and necessary. We needed to know the story from the female perspective which is almost always ignored. And there was a beautiful romance to boot. Give it the chance it deserves.

I verified my account specifically to come on here and write this review. This movie has aged gracefully, beautifully and extraordinarily well. Look at where Oscar Isaac is now. Need I say more? I am a woman (from 2024) telling anyone reading this that this movie is a tragically, hauntingly beautiful work of art that nicely captures a period of time in a bottle. I want to keep studying this period and these characters to understand them, the way the main character did. This story makes you want to keep going. And the way it ended was lovely. I fell in love with this movie. As a woman who has experienced many of the feelings and experiences of the main character, I deeply understand this film. The critics from 2011 should be ashamed. This movie is a perfect timepiece and truly honors its protagonist. Watch it.

W.E. is a film that demands a second look. It's a visually stunning exploration of love, obsession and the complexities of history. Madonna's effort is far more ambitious than critics give it credit for. The juxtaposition of two love stories across different eras is bold and thought-provoking. While it may not be a perfect film, it's undeniably captivating. It's a shame that such a visually rich and emotionally charged work has been unfairly dismissed by some critics.

As a child, certain parts weren't the best. But I do believe the rating is too low, and the history of W.E. on both sides is wonderful( the romance of Evgheni and Wally is *chef's kiss)

It doesn't make sense that this movie received such low ratings. I thought it was mesmerizing. Cinematically beautiful, thoughtfully written, engaging, and a wonderful suprise on a cold and snowy day. I didn't want it to end. Just watch it, you won't be disappointed.

This is very much a swanky looking (i.e. stylish) period drama. It shows off the decadence of the time (the first half of the 1900s), although certainly not everything is as it seems. It puts across quite well that being well off does not, in and of itself, make for a happy life, with some quite chilling, you could say sobering, scenes. I understand that not everyone would be keen to feel sorry for someone who is, or was, perhaps regarded as having 'it all' but this film seemed, to me, to do well to show the other side of the proverbial coin. I felt the performances were decent, particularly that of Andrea Riseborough. I suppose its a somewhat thoughtful film, for the most part, although I did find it frustrating the cutting between timelines, from the 1930s to the late 1990s, when items that revealed the affair are auctioned off. In a way it reminded me of the film 'Red Violin', which also was partly about an auction and the various times in the distant past in which the items sold were of relevance. I enjoyed the settings of period scenes - the sumptuous surroundings and so on. The classical (musical) score was reasonably good too and I guess it was at least somewhat engrossing. Of course a film directed by such a director as Madonna is likely to get some stick but I only concentrate on the film itself. I thought it was interesting, insightful to an extent but not excellent. A relatively good film, I would recommend this only if your particularly curious about the main theme/subject matter, yes, although be aware that it isn't purely set in the 1930s, so some of it concentrates on the 90s - I thought that was less interesting and I did feel it dragged a bit, plot wise, certainly toward the end. I was also aware that at times there's relatively little dialogue and it felt like the film makers were perhaps overly trying to make it seem, I imagine, atmospheric and moving. I'm not entirely sure that really works as such. I certainly preferred the first half of the film to the 2nd half. However, I don't know enough about the details to be able to say to what extent it may be historically accurate (or not).

Beautiful Movie! I Really Love It

Critiques of this movie seem quite harsh to me and I think it's undeniable that has to do with Madonna. This is a beautifully shot movie, perhaps a touch mellow dramatic but not enough to border on camp. I would say this movie shows directorial potential and her only big mistake was choosing to make a movie about nazi sympathizers without addressing their sordid history in any real way. To quote Aretha Franklin, "great gowns, beautiful gowns."

Madonna as a director shows a keen eye for style but overdoes it and make a really bad movie. This clearly would only appear to younger women and is a primped simpering folly of a turkey dreaming it's a peacock. The use of music is bad but overall the movie is a very interesting commentary on 20th century celebrity from an ultimate insider.

It's a handsome, detached movie searching for une raison d'ĂȘtre.

Opens with a scene of disturbingly graphic violence against a woman in an attempt to make up for the subsequent lack of even halfway decent writing. So basically, calling all Outlander fans.

I think Madonna did a very artistic job in telling this story from Wallis Simpsons perspective. The attention to details reminded me of Martin Scorsese.I don't know why she didn't get the acclaim she deserved. It w as wonderfully filmed & acted

I loved this movie and many kudos to Madonna! It was fabulous and beautiful. Perfectly casted, beautiful scenes, clothes, story. Thank you Madonna! Please do more scripts and movies like this. So artsy and visual. Wonderful!

Baaaaddd. Graphic and very boring. Not substantial character development.

Terrific performances, great locations, costumes unevenly directed but certainly enjoyable for any Anglophile.

Contrary to everyone else's opinion(s) I thoroughly enjoyed this movie...Madonna did a fabulous job directing a rather intricate story line and keeping it very cohesive and easy to follow...I loved the scenes where Wallis would be giving advice to the young Wally...heartfelt and authentic conversations, and I loved hearing Wallis' advice regarding life, love, and beauty! Also, it was indeed nice to hear Wallis' side of the whole love match between her and the future King of England --- when Wally was reading one of Wallis' letters to her Aunt, Wally could really feel the desperation of the free spirited Wallis, who was now trapped forever in exile with the man she loved, although she said it would have to be HIM forever and ever; no way out !!! I really did enjoy this film very much...I don't think many of us ever knew what Wallis gave up to marry the man she loved; The King of England, everyone has always been so focused on what Edward sacrificed...so, thank you Madonna for this lovely film...oh, and BRAVO on your wonderful direction!!

I loved it. I think much of the criticism stems from the fact that Madonna produced the move rather than the movie itself. It is helpful to know something about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor for context. A story well told and well acted.

One of my favorites. Such a great movie about a very interesting relationship. I loved it

Madonna amasses a talented cast and lavish set pieces for a different take on a past figure, but with an ill-suited soundtrack, too little chemistry from the historic couple and too little interest in the contemporary couple, W.E. is melodrama and style with too little substance.

A sweet tale. And thus the critical savaging this film endured is indeed perplexing. The film is pretty cool, and intellectually rewarding. It focuses on the Wallis-Edward story from Wallis' point of view and it's juxtaposition against Abby Cornish's character's life in 1998, when she engages (profoundly!) with the display and sale of Wallis possessions at Sotheby's. Through her connection with these things, and the flashbacks to Wallis' and Edward's lives, Abby learns how she is actually deeply unfulfilled in her married life, but through the depth of the love and difficulties suffered by Wallis and Edward. As Wallis and Edward's romance develops, her own with a security guard at Sothebys blossoms. The acting is great and subtile by all four leads, especially Riseborough. I think Madonna's direction is classic, almost like a music video with its pace and sharp close ups. A slight critique could be levelled at the unbelievable hockey moments like the cheering in the auction hall and calling the King of the United Kingdom, the King of England, was for me a little grating. There is also a charming nod to the Diana and Dodi relationship, when Abby travels to Paris to research Wallis further. I really enjoyed this film. It is a shame that this film was treated so purely by the critics, as people will have been deprived of a warm pleasant story.
