We Own the Night Reviews

May 3, 2025

It's carefully paced. It's a little far fetched with some of the plotting. Joaquin Pheonix is sometimes little more than a mumble. But I was fairly gripped.

Fairly "old-school" in a sense. James Gray's crime drama is reminiscent of Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola while serving as a showcase for some nomination caliber performances.

There is a reason this movie is never talked about and not aired on cable ever. It's a waste of time. A bunch of cliches. No great dialogue

Both sides of the drug culture in New York - Wahlberg and Phoenix as brothers under long time cop Duvall as dad.

"We Own the Night" emerges as a thriller in the classic sense, masterfully intertwining the gritty elements of crime and drama that aficionados of the genre deeply appreciate. Joaquin Phoenix delivers an excellent performance, embodying the complexity of his character with an intensity that anchors the film's emotional core. Mark Wahlberg, on the other hand, doesn't quite hit the same mark, leaving something to be desired in his role. Robert Duvall, true to form, delivers a profoundly moving performance that's likely to bring tears to the eyes, reminding us of his veteran prowess and depth as an actor. The film doesn't shy away from the raw and real—emotions run high against a backdrop of violence, suspense, and adrenaline-pumping car chases, making for a riveting viewing experience. "We Own the Night" stands out not just for its stellar cast, but for how it skillfully balances these elements to keep viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Highly recommended for those who love a well-crafted thriller that knows how to keep the heart racing while touching the soul.

I don't get the critic consensus, this movie is my favorite James gray movie by far, super deep and thrilling!

If this were made earlier in the pioneering position for the genre, it would be better accepted. Otherwise, with the exception between the resonating performances from the brotherly, well-cast duo and one uniquely fogged up sequence, it's overshadowed by classier hits. (B-)

The ending feels a little too abrupt and the Eva Mendes character isn't well defined. However, visually the film is often mesmerizing (the car chase and the final gunfight are both beautiful and frightening) and I like how Gray sets up several different potentially cliched Cop film scenarios, only to knock them down.

I loved every moment of this. In the realm of Goodfellas.

A well acted and directed film about one brother who must make a choice with his criminal family and his police family.

interesting but very very sedate and underplayed. Not a 'date movie'. A corrupt NYC gangster vs NYPD plot.. Cameo by MAYOR Whozits 'How am i doing?" Funded by MARK CUBAN, etc.

This movie is kind of ok...kind of. The script is essentially a re-write of the French Connection with a couple of extra bits thrown in to cover up the cracks and a very slightly different conclusion. The direction isn't bad but don't take that to mean it's good...it isn't. The main problem is that it never really knows where it wants to be. Is it a cop drama or a thriller? I'm not sure even the production team could figure it out as it tries to be both...unsuccessfully. It's worth a couple of hours if you've got nothing better to do but I wouldn't put off something else to watch it. A fair rating would be the good side of mediocre.

A fairly celebrated cast delivers an unmemorable cops v drug dealer non thriller. Hard to say exactly how they got it so wrong but the dialogue was woeful and there was never any realism injected into the film. Impossible to feel any emotion for them. Maybe Eva Mendes was the only one who did themselves any credit at all.

Patchy. Some scenes are well-crafted and evocative but the family tensions between Joacquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall are clumsily handled in places. The stand-out sequence is the car chase in the rain which is gripping and visually stunning.

gph.is/28LnKBz Amazed that they managed to take this sort of subject matter and make it boring.

Such a great start. Climax is uninspired and pretty boring. It should have been rewritten. The scene with the wire is one of the all time great scenes in movie history therefore the movie gets a 4

Does little to distinguish itself from other mob movies

The critics and audience giving this film a low rating are out of their mind. The script is damn near perfect, the pacing is damn near perfect, the acting is outstanding, the direction is good. I don't know what people are looking for in a movie anymore. If there isn't a cut every 2 seconds in a film or there aren't superheroes or robots people "just can't get into it." The script structure is one of the finest I've seen in recent films. Phoenix doesn't make bad movies. His intensity is unmatched. Wahlberg, who is normally a poor to average actor actually shines in scenes with Phoenix.

We Own the Night isn't as memorable as you would hope with its all-star cast, but there are a few heart-pounding scenes that make up for its subpar storytelling.

With this great cast of actors and obviously a decent budget, great cinematography, this film disappointed because of inferior writing/editing/directing. What began as a very good idea, a family on both sides of the law, the first half was very compelling and then it sort of peaked early, fell flat, then actually got painfully bad. It needed 20 minutes cut off, some scenes done better, and a better ending. I imagine Robert Duvall, Joaquin Phoenix, and Mark Wahlberg all wish they could forget they were in it.
