Welcome to the Rileys Reviews

Apr 13, 2025

Very sloooow at first. A good storyline but the ending was not good, or what I expected.

"Welcome to the Rileys" is a grounded story about an older couple and teenage runaway forming an unlikely bond. With real performances and an interesting concept, the film was a good watch. The characters learn to challenge themselves and open up, and it can be cathartic. Feel free to watch it if you would like.

If you like a Great drama with great acting and a story you've Never Seen before…this is The One to see.

A fairly poignant first act stagnates a bit and then shortly after the film becomes interesting somewhere in its third act, the screenwriter disappointingly ends it all.

Doug and Lois Riley (James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo) are struggling to hold their marriage together after the sudden death of their teenage daughter. While on a business trip to New Orleans, Doug meets Mallory (Kristen Stewart), a 16-year-old prostitute and, in an attempt to assist her, develops a unique mentorship role with the streetwise girl. While the scenario feels improbable, it works based on the insightful script from Ken Hixon and strong performances from Gandolfini and Stewart. Unfortunately, things slide significantly when Lois arrives on the scene unannounced as the relationship between her and the wayward teen never rings true under the circumstances. Welcome to the Rileys is a noble attempt at tackling issues of grief and redemption, but ultimately falls flat over the last half of the film.

I like this film. Because this film touches my heart

The main criticisms i've read for this movie are pace and its running out of things to say. My understanding being those who said the first fell asleep and assumed the second. It packed a fair few punches and lessons in each chapter of the story, especially as you approached the 2/3rds mark. I would however agree on the first point, with the caveot being without holding those shots slightly to long that it makes you wince and maybe even feel again, the movie wouldn't survive. It needs to stew in its material for it to hit home to the viewer and it as hell worked on me.

I liked this film, which was an honest story of a couple stirring out of grief for their daughter's death and a teen prostitute whose life they help to turn around.

Dull screenplay, but worth watching due to a dynamic cast. First film I watched starring James Gandolfini, and his acting was excellent. Brought the film back many points with his fatherly figure and acting as a influence for Mallory. Kristen Stewart showed a different side as compared to her in Twilight, Cake Eaters, or Adventureland.

JG is a lost gem. New Orleans well portrayed. Young Ms. Stewart no less than convincing.

A very slow pace knocks this drama down a notch in my book. A couple who loses their 15 year old daughter in a car accident drift apart with each passing day. He takes up a weekly visit with a waitress at the pancake restaurant as she falls deeper into depression and prescription drug use / abuse. He attends a plumbing convention in New Orleans after the waitress dies unexpectedly, Once he arrives, he blows the convention and hits a strip club where he meets a 17 year old runaway (with a fake ID so she can dance) who resembles his daughter. They form a bond which is stretched when wife drives from the plains to NOLA. It's a slow, sentimental movie that manages to touch your heart a bit.

The Performance By Gandolfini Wins It All Here. A Semi-Reprise Of His Sopranos Character Archatype, The Presence He Creates Is Fantastic. The Rest Of The Cast Just Try To Lamely Fill The Gaps.

This just got not enough punch in the scenes to cry , laugh , be trilled ....and a not satisfying end ...so Medium

James Gandolfini was always a powerful presence and here opposite an intricate performance from Kirsten Stewart the picture begins with great promise but the story falters long before a limp ending.

After Twilight I never thought I could take Kirsten Stewart seriously but Welcome to The Rileys was a pretty good movie.

Kristen Stewart does such an amazing job in this film. And her chemistry with James Gandolfini feels very genuine.
