Werewolves Within Reviews

A decent oddball comedy with some other elements sprinkled in. Every aspect has something that’s at least a little off, but it just manages to pull through with its style and humor.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 3, 2024

The emphasis is on wry comedy rather than visceral terror, but the twists and turns keep coming and the ensemble cast delivers the gallows humour with deadpan aplomb.

It was a delightful movie. I don't know another word to describe it. It was the perfect palate cleanser after what's been happening in life, in the world, and in film.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Aug 14, 2023

Though horror fans (myself included) often have a taste for bleak nihilism, it’s refreshing to see a genre film embrace the radical idea that being a genuinely good person is a worthy life’s purpose.

fangtastically good fun... an entertaining lycan-throwback to 80s genre cinema and a murder mystery with real bite.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 12, 2022

Werewolves Within has a nice balance of thrills, shrills, and eye-opening kills to satisfy fans while dealing with all the subterfuge. A harmless, dark-comic diversion.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 9, 2022

The movie isn’t all that interested in the well-worn werewolf mythologies that have been handed down through generations. Instead it’s about communities and the wild potpourri of people that often make them up.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 17, 2022

Josh Ruben could be one of the most important genre filmmakers in modern cinema. With Werewolves Within he proves it's actually possible to make a near perfect genre smash.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jun 19, 2022

While sometimes over-reliant on stereotypes and broad characterizations, Werewolves Within finds enough hilarity and twists within it's "The Thing" style premise to be worth your time.

It may lack great scares, but who needs jump scares when you're having this much fun?

| Original Score: 7/10 | May 10, 2022

its got less hairy, bone-cracking transformations than...The Howling or An American Werewolf in London, but that seems deliberate; as the title suggests, Werewolves Within is less about the monster manifested and more about the beast within us all.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 12, 2022

And just like that, we have a GOOD video game movie.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 11, 2021

It's a lot of things - it's got comedy, suspicion, suspense, and twists. It doesn't have a whole lot of horror until the third act, though. And that's fine, because it gives the comedy and the building suspense plenty of room to breathe.

It's a film that wants to please and to some extent succeeds in doing so, without ever being very funny or very alarming.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 22, 2021

A masterful comedy, impeccably set up, and fitfully funny. Comparisons to 'Clue' are tempting.

WEREWOLVES WITHIN is the second feature film from director, actor, and writer, Josh Ruben, and he has landed another perfect and unconventional horror-comedy. That's it. That's the review. Just kidding.

| Sep 14, 2021

Moving swiftly through darkened scenery, drawing blood through menace that's silly and bloody, it seems both cheap and mandatory to call this Knives In.

| Original Score: B | Aug 29, 2021

Best described as "What if James Gunn directed Clue?"

| Original Score: 6.5/10 | Aug 23, 2021

This warmly satirical horror comedy is a worthy successor to An American Werewolf in London. The talented cast members all possess the skills and onscreen ensemble chemistry to make the script really come alive.

| Original Score: 4 | Aug 8, 2021

The tone is just too offensively light; it plays like the pilot of a CW show that only lasts one season. Towards the finish, people keep lurching forward and seeming to reveal themselves. It's all amiably meaningless.
