Critics Consensus

While Wild Indian might have benefited from a more probing approach to its themes, it's held together by Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr.'s skilled direction and a strong performance from lead Michael Greyeyes.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Wild Indian is ostensibly a thriller, but it moves at a sedate pace, offering a queasy ambiguity about racial dynamics, generational trauma, and unique kinds of American reckoning with the past. Rated: 3/5 •  Sep 19, 2024 Full Review Phil Hoad Guardian It feels as if director Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr has created something new in his debut feature: a fascinatingly conflicted antihero of Ojibwe heritage who seems entirely distinct from previous Native American protagonists. P W Beautiful exploration of modern native american culture and one mans attempt to hide from his dangerous past - and present. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/22 Full Review wayne m WIld Indian is an interesting film, although I think an incomplete one. It has a very interesting premise but I felt lacked somewhat in execution. The film is set in two time periods. Firstly in Wisconsin in 1988 with two teenage Native American boys, Makwa and Teddo. Makwa is bullied at home and school and when a situation develops into tragedy they have to make life changing decisions. Most of the film is set in the present day as the we follow the boys that are now grown men. They have gone in different directions to how you might have expected and they now have to deal with actions from the past. The film is an interesting one but I felt it was overwritten and acted in parts and felt stilted at times. Potentially a good film but one that didn't quite deliver.
