William Tell Reviews

As kids we all knew about the legend of William Tell shooting the apple off his son’s head. As adults after this movie I am not sure we know much more about him other than his big screen treatment feeling like a less interesting Braveheart.

Its primary target audience are those who loved this type of movie in the past and will be happy to find a new one in that vein.

| Original Score: B | Apr 14, 2025

Overall, William Tell is an epic story that is not only easy on the eyes with its visuals and costume designs, but in its fighting against those in power storyline.

Unfortunately, in this rather Hamm-fisted form, Tell’s legend comes across as rather a slog.... Listen to Rossini’s overture instead.

Very interesting movie that tells a cool history.

You can appreciate William Tell's cinematic scope despite its flaws. Director Nick Hamm nails the sweeping vistas, bloody battles, and historically accurate production design, but struggles with character development and plot connectivity.

... the technical elements are as-expected for a narrative of this scope and size, & the thematic elements are particularly poignant in a political era of similar tyrannical greed, [yet] "William Tell" largely falls flat due to its rote approach ...

Without a hint of humor, it doesn't lack a single cliché...[Full review in Spanish]

Some stirring old-school action sequences can’t plug all the holes in a formulaic script that takes some egregious historical liberties. Plus, the ending is ridiculous.

...a (too serious) bloody psychodrama that deconstructs the image of the hero... [Full review in Spanish]

It seems a bit of a stretch to think that this is going to end up as the first installment in a long-running MCU-style series of hard-edged escapist adventures loosely based on history. But stranger things have happened.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 4, 2025

A defiant throwback to a time when movie marquees boasted “a cast of thousands,” immersed audiences in chaotic, close-up widescreen Technicolor battle scenes and featured chiseled, virtuous heroes doing battle with smirking, thoroughly evil villains.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 4, 2025

Well executed, [William Tell] maintains its consistency thanks to [Claes] Bang's excellent performance and a story that continues to connect with audiences over time. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 4, 2025

By leaning into the passé action tropes, the story loses much of its emotional heft.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Apr 4, 2025

Unlike in Braveheart or The Patriot, it is the hero’s success rather than his defiance that ultimately rallies his kinsmen.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 4, 2025

William Tell possesses the general feel of an epic story but little specific to make it so.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 4, 2025

Hamm’s film is a well-crafted but innately slight endeavor.

| Apr 4, 2025

A well-shot, but anemic, exhausting and overlong medieval action thriller. The talents of Ben Kingsley, Claes Bang, and Golshifteh Farahani are all wasted because of the vapid, pedestrian screenplay.

| Apr 4, 2025

A big-budget ($45 million) medieval slayfest that doesn’t shy away from its preposterously bold flirtation with parody. But that’s to be expected of a filmmaker so presumptuous that he’s already anticipating a follow-up, no doubt dubbed “Deux Tell.”

| Original Score: B- | Apr 3, 2025

The film is more concerned with not displeasing anyone than with actually pleasing anyone. [Full review in Spanish]
