Critics Consensus

Deftly directed by star Anna Kendrick, Woman of the Hour uses an incredible true story as the foundation for a powerful examination of the intersection between systemic misogyny and violence.

Tara Brady Irish Times Kendrick proves herself a formidable talent on both sides of the camera. The timeline can be choppy, but this is as considered as it is chilling. Rated: 4/5 Nov 3, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Kendrick’s knack for capturing period detail goes beyond the psychedelic synthetics and kipper ties. She taps into the treacherous sexism that was hardwired into the entertainment industry and wider culture of the time. Rated: 4/5 Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (LAist) I think she [Kendrick] has a really good sense of psychology. Oct 24, 2024 Full Review Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope Kendrick shows real talent in this, her first time in the movie director's chair. Her acting performance here is familiar. The character of Bradshaw is right in her wheelhouse. What's new is her performance as a director, which is something else. Rated: B+ Jan 25, 2025 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? When the victims are pawns for the cat and mouse, it becomes about glorification versus abhorrence. When the victims become the point, we see the micro-expressions and backtracking and desperation. Rated: 8/10 Jan 24, 2025 Full Review Loren King Newport This Week (RI) Kendrick deftly juggles timeline and tonal shifts to create a subversive crime thriller, with expected scares and unexpected empathy and humanity. RobbG u Sooo. Every guy is either a incompetent moron, rude, disgusting, or a killer. But all the woman are smart, independent, and amazing. Like really, this is not how the story went back in the day. Hollywood needs to stop bashing ALL men ALL the time. This movie was annoying. This is NOT the real story, then, or now. Yes, the guy was a disgusting murderer, but despite what Hollywood tries to push, that is not the way the average man thinks or acts. This guy was evil, not all men are like that. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Judy C Good story that they didn't make! The most interesting facts were "told" at the end. I don't get it 😞 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Sam A Such a gem of a film. The timelines take some getting used to, but it helps make the storyline interesting. This is a slow thriller, but in a chilling good way. It's not a fast paced chase where the serial killer goes nuts and chases the women, he just attacks and it is very ominous Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Daniel O This films leaves an impact. Every actress in this film that portrayed a victim showed a differing but real range of emotions and I couldn't help but feel for everyone who was hurt along the way. It's hard to believe that a serial killer appeared on a national dating game show... But, the triumph that comes when the runaway teenager makes sure he gets caught is a win for everyone. Her emotional intelligence in asking him to keep it a secret because she'd be embarrassed herself is brilliant. The film was just the right amount of time (1.5 hours) to tell the store, deliver the emotion and finish off with some details of what happened to Rodney Alcala after the fact. Lastly, Anna Kendrick killed it: both as a direct as an actress. This film really made me want to watch more of her work. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Tom M More about how women navigate the strange world of a male dominated society. A bit messy with the timelines and probably not as close to the awful truth as it could be. This is a pretty gripping tale of being in the wrong place in the wrong time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Danielle W A gripping film until the end. It covers quite a bit of ground, rings true to my experience as a woman, and very believable that women would be dismissed when trying to report a dangerous criminal in the 70s. Rodney is well acted, with the right amount of brains and charisma to get away with anything, it seems. The time frame kept me guessing, but in a good way. The runaway steals the show a bit - to have the bravery to act as she did was amazing to watch, and an homage to all the women who have ever had to do this, in fear of their lives. Unfortunately, this film is very relevant in 2025 where less that 1% of sexual assaults results in a criminal conviction. Anna Kendrick should be proud of this film. I look forward to seeing more of her work in years to come. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Read all reviews
