Torres' playful and whimsical film is the ideal tonic for the winter blues, bursting with sunshine, fantasy, and mouth-wateringly fiery food.

A romantic fairy tale that's light and in several ways seductive, if not exactly filling. Still, there's always something enticing for the eye.

Flavor? Amusingly piquant with traces of honey. Aftertaste? Thin.

This would-be spicy film has been made blandly palatable.

There's a forced sprightliness, here, that reminds me too much of how people get at the end of a party -- you know, when they've stopped having fun but can't quite muster the will to leave or clean up the trash and vomit.

A succession of Cruz close-ups -- as striking as they may be -- do not a feature make. One also could use a plot, a soupon of conflict and a heroine with more substance than an inflatable doll.

Tries too hard to be playful and sensual, wacky and romantic, and comes away feeling fake and prefabricated instead.

Woman on Top is a lot less substantial, but no less enjoyable than the original food, sex and 'magic realism' hit of 1992, Like Water for Chocolate.

A dish that's pretty easy to swallow, but if it could have borrowed some of Isabella's more potent spices, it might have boasted a more lasting flavor.

It won't please the cynics, but it'll make the romantics among us smile.

Short and sweet, it's suitable for a date night that includes both a movie and dinner.

Woman on Top can't overcome a story that's little more than a lumpy, uninspired contrivance.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Jan 1, 2000
Instead of hot, you get barely lukewarm -- a tepid and oily 'Calgon, take me away!' bath that seems to be aimed at women who don't get out very much.

Cruz has everything it takes to be a big star, except maybe, in this case, the right movie.

Are you happy to spend the entire movie worshiping [Cruz's] beauty and celebrating her character's self-actualization, or do you want a little more on your plate?
