Wuthering Heights Reviews
Arnold creates a radically desolate piece of cinema that presents a challenge to traditionalist audiences.

It never recovers from its breathtakingly gorgeous first half where young Heathcliff and Cathy run around on the misty moor. You just wish it goes on and on like that.

...a striking adaptation of an Emily Brontë classic, that eschews many of the clichés one might associate with popular views of the source material.

This 2 hour 10 minute film is not anything like I expected.

Without the use of music, Arnold's Wuthering Heights manages to be one of the most sensual developments of love perhaps ever committed to film.

At a little over two hours, Wuthering Heights can often make arduous viewing. With little dialogue -- a lot of it often wooden -- and virtually no music it is up to the viewer to take what they can from the rich imagery in the film.

I found myself wondering how anyone could have been convinced that what the culture needed was yet another cinematic treatment of Emily Brontë's novel.

[Director Andrea] Arnold always gets incredible performances out of her unknown actors. Here, she -- and they -- make an old story refreshingly new again.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 20, 2018
The film isn't just earthy -- it is muddy and soiled. Arnold is fantastic at conveying a tactile world of rough edges - wood grain, bracken and rock - a gritty world inhabited by moths, beetles and watched over by hovering birds of prey..

So it loses steam, part of the way through, but worth it for the first portion? Yes, because that is like no other costume drama you have ever seen.
| Aug 31, 2018
With Wuthering Heights, Andrea Arnold confirms herself as the most important directing talent to emerge from Britain since Stephen Daldry and Sam Mendes.
| Aug 10, 2018
The director eagerly divests "Wuthering Heights" of the stifling artifice of the costume drama only to become enslaved by the artifice of the atmospheric indie drama.

Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights is going to anger a lot of people. Which is a shame, because it is brilliant.

You could look at this as Arnold doing her job well -- after all, her source material isn't exactly a party -- but it's so bleak that it ends up being a little too hard to watch.

Arnold's coup turns the old story around, from a wicked love-lost tragedy into a crisis of a society suffering the guilt and ghosts of slavery.

Intense and imagistic, sensual and rather salacious, this is a wild, fascinatingly bleak adaptation that seizes on the book's more lurid motifs.

Wuthering Heights is stunningly shot and beautifully acted. It puts you inside the minds of Cathy and Heathcliff in a way no other adaptation has done before.

Cuts beneath the romantic accretion of decades of movie and 온라인카지노추천 adaptations to penetrate the dark heathen heart of Emily Bronte's 1847 novel.

Most of what's here is interesting enough to be valuable on its own right without quite managing to be "good".
| Original Score: 6/10 | Dec 12, 2012
The atmosphere is vivid but the romance is not.
