I was saddened to find this is the only movie Austin Chick has directed and written so far.If and when his next one comes out,I will see it.I was definitely frustrated to some degree at certain points in this movie, but I was drawn more and more in physiologically to the characters feeling that by the end the final scene just blew me away.Mark Ruffalo is fun to watch on screen. So for this being one good indie film I give "XX/XY" a C.
Short and sweet that sneaks in a nice dose of reality. Surprising in our world of immediate gratification, how trust is so much sexier!
Okay...had potential to be better...very interesting plot but executed in a mediocre fashion...Ruffalo good as usual...
An exceptionally realistic examination of the complexity of interpersonal relationships. Didn't expect it to be a good movie at all. The cinematography, writing, and music all exceeded my expectations. Mark ruffalo perfectly portrayed not just another man in this modern society that's filled with people conflicted by serial monogamous relationships, but women can definitely identify with his painful struggle with love and reality as well. What does friendship mean when it comes to love and lust? What role can honesty really play in a "healthy" relationship? This movie cannot explain these perennial mysteries. However, the director certainly succeeded in revealing why happiness becomes rarer and rarer as we grow up, make decisions, and deal with the consequences coming out of those decisions...implicitly subtle, of course
Basing my rating on how I felt watching it: Uncomfortable. I hesitate to say it was "bad" because perhaps that was the intention. Perhaps I have a sore-spot for not only infidelity, but sociopathic actions towards people in terms of sexuality.
"There's no room for honesty in a healthy relationship..." cool !!! ingenious !! and a happy finishing, I think not perfect...coles ought to be left alone !
I wouldn't watch even the half of it if it wasn't for my beloved Mark Ruffalo. It was such a trashy movie. If this was my first Ruffalo movie, I'd probably hate him. I hated the relationships.
"There's no room for honesty in a healthy relationship..." When two college students, Sam and Thea (Robertson & Stange), meet Coles (Ruffalo) at a party, their mutual attraction is immediate, leading to a passionate and awkward night together, and the onset of an intensely charged bond. As they continue to push the sexual boundaries of their friendship, however, they are tested by Sam and Coles' incipient romance and Thea's increasing recklessness, until the relationship dissolves amid a cloud of fear, resentment and mistrust. Eight years later they reunite. Thea: What's a little fucking among friends, right? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coles: There's no room for honesty in a healthy relationship. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guy who asks for his $ back: I saw your picture once in filmmaker magazine and I saw your movie. Coles: Oh, yeah. Guy who asks for his $ back: Yeah, I really didn't like it much. Coles: Uh, I'm sorry. Guy who asks for his $ back: I was kind of wondering, can I have my money back? Coles: Um, you know that ticket you bought, I didn't get any of that money. It all went to the distributor and executive producers. I didn't see a dime. Guy who asks for his $ back: But you made it, you're responsible. Coles: What was it, eight bucks? Guy who asks for his $ back: Nineteen. I took a girl. She didn't like it at all either. She said she thought it was morally reprehensible, especially in its depiction of women. Coles: All right, there you go and tell your girlfriend that I said I'm sorry. Guy who asks for his $ back: Oh. You know, we broke up -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coles: So, we're all sorry but we all had fun." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coles: I was kinda looking forward to just hanging out and doing nothing. Sam: But we can do that any night. Coles: Yeah, but the thing is we don't. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coles: I'm surprised that you're so upset by this situation. Sam: What is this situation? Coles: This! Sam: There is no situation except for you being a complete asshole. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coles: Would you think I was being too forward if I said, "Let's go back to your room." Sam: What would you say if I said, "Let's go back to my room, but let's bring Thea."
i'm writing this review in the middle of it, which can't be a good sign. the acting felt sort of empty to me, and i didn't really feel a connection between coles and sam. eh eh eh.
Mark Ruffalo, one of the best actors of his generation, helps make this an interesting watch. It ultimately falls flat in the end though.
I love the realism in the awkward, intimate moments. A fun and sobering tale of relationships and indiscretions.
You would think that, at some point, I would begin to learn that just because a movie has someone you like acting in it does not mean that it's going to be a good film. Yet it seems I never do learn this fact and this movie is more proof of that. I watched it because of, yes, Mark Ruffalo - that's the only reason. The first 30-40 minutes was just awful and I kept debating whether to turn the movie off or to continue it..but I stuck with it and it did get gradually better but never better enough to make me want to rate this movie higher than a 4/10. What a completely messed up story and relationship between these three people. I mean, man. It really was pretty screwed up. How can anyone find such a relationship to be a healthy or attractive thing? I certainly found it to be none of the above. It sort of seemed like 'Coles' just wanted what he couldn't have and would rather pursue happiness than obtain happiness. (I will admit, Mark Ruffalo looked amazing in this movie, as he always does.) I like some pretty depressing and messed up movies but this was just too much and definitely not for me.
