Zelary Reviews
Epic, epic movie of war, redemption, and love. It is like nothing I have ever seen before. Beautiful in every way.
Messy, disjointed, yet still compelling at times. It's a real shame that this film cannot decide what it wants to achieve and execute it well.
Beautiful cinematography, good acting, and a very good screenplay. The disparate entry of several sub-texts here and there are confusing at times. Worth watching.
A pleasant and elegant production with some earnest performances (especially Anna Geislerová's and György Cserhalmi) and an interesting premise. The problem is that the film is two hours and a half long, and ultimately it doesn't offer anything new or truly engaging. The parts are better than the sum of them.
Wonderful story.. A very romantic movie and incredible flow of the story when the woman has no other choice but to marry a man in order to save herself. The love of both person began to appear as she getting to know the man little by little.. The "beauty of alcohol" shown in this movie really open my eyes why I dislike alcohol.. The ending scene should have been better..
Zelary Bravo! Beautifully filmed love story that invites you inside the homes and lives of the good people of Zelary during WWII. This is more than the story of a city girl forced into hiding in a remote mountain community in order to save herself from the Gestapo. Here in this picturesque mountain region, the filmmaker introduces us to endearing characters, heros and some villains too and reminds us, I think, that the human condition is a common thread that connects us all, regardless of who we are, where we live or what dogma/doctrine we are running toward or away from. Visually a work of art and certainly the best looking film that I've seen in ages. Pappy Bob's pedestrian opinion: A simple, well-told, universally interesting tale complimented by exquisite cinematography.
A Drama from ( Czech Republic ) set in WW2 .. and the story is very nice & it's been nominated for best foreign language film
From the Czech Republic came Zelary a masterful war drama showing heart-breaking scenes, no wonder it was nominated for best Foreign Language movie in 2004.The story was about a young medical student Eliska, who was a member of the Czech resistance during WWII. When the Gestapo captured one of her friends, she must hide and went with Joza to the mountains, a man she saved his life by giving him a blood transfusion. As part of her new identity, she must marry Joza, to be accepted in the village. The story showed her adaptation in this beautiful mountain village, and her growing attachment and love she felt for Joza..Zelary showed beautiful cinematography, marvelous music and excellent directing and great acting of Czech actors.
In fact I am not sure whether I saw the film or not... but the book was pretty impressive. ... well now I had a look at the trailer and I am sure that yes, I have seen it and liked it very much....
This was good though quite long. It drew me attention as a beautiful woman had to travel to different places away from Nazis with different identity. Despite from the great landscape where the film took place it was a decent storyline that turned out to be unpredictable.
This starts out as the story of Hana/Eliska. At first her exile into the remote Zelary seems like a nightmare. But she gradually discovers the virtues of this tiny village, as well as the simple, honest man that has brought her there. And as the film develops, it becomes less about her and more about the village as a whole. The characters in this film all feel really genuine and charming. When they laughed, I found myself laughing along with them, as if I were there. The performances, the dialogue and excellent cinematography come together to create individuals who all feel very real and natural. It does drag on a good deal more than it probably needed to, but this movie isn't really about partaking of the story so much as enjoying the company of its setting and the people in it. So a little rambling is forgivable. Definitely worth seeing and enjoying, but not something to sit down to lightly.
At a walking pace throughout, this film explores many WW2 issues in a way few others do. Everything is done subtly and gradually grows, such that the sense of direction, the feelings towards different characters and attitudes towards rural Czech life change many times, taking the viewer in and delivering an excellent finale. As ever, a great plot based on a true story. Some great performances. Recommended as something very fresh!
Czech's film. I like the movie setting and how did they struggle to live together during the world war. Angle from the countryside was simply breath-taking!
