Surrogates Reviews

Mar 30, 2025

It’s been a while since i saw that movie, but it left quite an interesting impact on me, thus i would love to have such a thing in my life as a surrogate..Not of me though.. i would like to have my mom’s version of it.. i lost my recently and would love to see her in that shape, programmed the way she was when she was alive..i wish i had that much of $$$ to order such a robot to have her voice in it, her overall look and her face, behavior..

Surrogates (2009) takes an interesting concept, people living through robotic avatars, and turns it into a straightforward action thriller. The plot is easy to follow, with a few twists along the way, but it never really digs deep into the bigger questions it could have explored. The movie has a polished look, and the visual effects for the surrogates are decent for the time, making them feel just artificial enough. The directing keeps the pacing tight, but the script doesn't do much beyond moving the story from one action scene to the next. There's a moment or two where it tries to be thought-provoking, but it doesn’t fully commit. Bruce Willis does what he always does, playing the tough, weary protagonist, but there’s not much character depth to work with. The supporting cast does fine, but nothing really stands out. Ving Rhames' presence adds some weight to the film, but the dialogue overall is just serviceable. The score is typical for an action thriller, doing its job without being memorable. The cinematography is solid, with some good action sequences, but it doesn’t do anything particularly unique. The movie is entertaining enough, but if you were hoping for something as layered as I, Robot, this one doesn’t quite reach that level. Still, it’s a decent watch if you're in the mood for a simple, action-driven sci-fi flick.

Good concept for a movie at the time. I actually enjoyed it at times, but I'm a sci-fi nerd. The problem is the plot just doesn't hold up. Maybe the movie should have taken place further in the future instead of literally looking like 2010 lol I mean, come on.. Sony had a hard enough time keeping up with the demand for the PS5 when it launched lol. They literally didn't have enough raw Earth materials to manufacture what they needed. Remember? But yet, the movie would like you to believe that over a billion people on the planet can have their own android (surrogate)? We only get a glimpse at the manufacturing process of surrogates, but they showed the company (VSI) was pumping them out like they were simply making bottled soda or bags of chips lol. Think about raw materials needed to make just ONE of these things, from the metal skeleton to the optics and processing units to the circuitry and wiring. Plus the surrogate chair and whole neural uplink thing to connect to it. And speaking of that connection between operator and surrogate, they never EVER explained that lol. We barely see people using cell phones in the movie, so what type of network is supporting the seamless wireless connection to the surrogate? 🤦‍♂️ So yea.. you see how the plot sucks? Lol. Cool concept, but totally unrealistic. Oh yea, they also NEVER mentioned what these things cost. A frickin' PSVR2 is steep enough at $600, but a billion people all over the world can afford their own android to live their perfect life? Yea, ok..

легкий фільм, візуальні ефекти гарні. Іншого і не очікував. Подивився до кінця з задаволенням. Дружина головного героя тримала у екрану до кінця фільму)))))

If I had to rank this movie, I'd say it was better than The Phantom Menace but not as good as The Princess Bride. It actually made me laugh a few times, which most movies do not. The exposition scenes take place during the opening credits; there are no boring plot explanations during the story itself. The one disbelief I really had to suspend was how people lying in couches operating robot surrogates never got fat. Other than that, this is a pretty straightforward cop story with robots thrown in. At one point in the movie, I did wonder for a second if I was watching I, Robot. Also, I watched this in DVD. The director's commentary track was actually informative. Even though that was the only extra feature on the DVD, I felt like my $3 thrift-store purchase was not a waste of money.

This film is OK. Bruce Willis and the rest of the cast give good performances and the action and plot is decent. There's a few good twists but overall the film feels like a basic action flick

I like the premise, it is not ground breaking and has the feel of The Matrix, a bit of Terminator, hidden in a police procedural. It worked for me. Every movie is not going to be totally original in fact very few are including the above. Movie was definitely completed on a budget not too worried about the use of future technology ( cars, cell phones, computers etc….) but I give it credit there it holds up in 2024. It is good to see Bruce Willis in his prime.

Very interesting concept of a society run by the so called 'surrogates'. Although there's room for improvement, it still makes for a nice movie

Creative futuristic premise, almost reflective of the times we live in now in gaming and cell phones. Surrogates is a smaller scale world of avitars in the real life society that challenge real or fake emotions. 15 years later, it's viable to a different and more relevant meaning to General Population today.

Watched it about whenit came out. Watched it again. Think some of the negative critics must have eaten something that dusagreed with them; or they are just trying to stir up sci fi fans. Maybe not all possibilities are explored, so what, there's enough in it, including action, to make it an enjoyable, thought provoking watch. Enjoy.

Bruce was still good at this point in his career. Not a bad movie. Simple plot but entertaining

Despite its many flaws, this sci-fi flick is cool. The premise is outrageous which helps you forgive the flaws. Willis was good, as usual, but others pulled their weight.

Stylish fun. Good script despite some nonsense reviews . Bruce Willis is ALWAYS watchable . As a Sci Fi nut its taken me 12 years to find this i'm glad I did as its been hidden by by bad reviews of people who dont know what their watching I really really enjoyed this !

It ain't half bad. If you've seen all the good movies this is a good way to spend 1.5 hours. With a little advance in technology, this could actually be reality. Original story and a good pace.

So profoundly empty headed that it achieves some sort of idiot's uncanny valley, where complete dolts mistake the movie for having brains.

I'm confusing by all the lame reviews on Rotten Tomatoes on this one (other sites aren't that brutal) It's a fun little Sci/Fi Romp into the idea of people having a body that they can live the world through, it's a great perfect body..etc...while they live at home and turn into a vegetable in a fancy "connection" chair (my words). The plot was fine, the original inventor wants to change what's he's done and interacts in a lot of cool ways, in the end well, just see it. Come on people? Just go with the flow and enjoy this one. I love that it raises great questions. That's what good movies are for, the CGI is good enough. I was very happy with it. I learned a LONG time ago about the idea of "willingful suspension of disbelief", you got to go with the flow to get the most out of this movie and many other ones. I liked the ending. All Sci Fi would be DEAD if you couldn't do that. Nothing felt predictable, it was interesting on why the owner of the "bots" were getting killed and why..

This movie does a very bad job of convincing me surrogates is a bad thing. A safe and comfortable way to explore new hobbies, experiences, sexuality and gender? Virtually eliminating crime overnight? Easily accessible to all wealth classes? How could this possibly be a bad thing? Oh yeah, because Bruce Willis feels a little uncomfortable talking to his robot wife. This movie is feels like it was written by a religious midwest mom who has read blogs about the dangers of online video games and she wants to teach her teenage son a lesson. Only to make video games sound way cooler in the process.

I enjoyed this one overall as it was an interesting futuristic Sci-Fi story where almost everyone has robotic double for their aging human body mixed in with a police chase.
