Splinter Reviews
"It's okay. We're just going to cut off your arm..." The first thing I noticed is that the non-criminal couple seemed to be an unlikely match; a shapely model with the nutty professor. Also, she prefers action while he is a thinker. However, later on, his intellectual approach ends up being useful. None are very good actors except for Shea Whigham. Being surrounded while in a gas station (or supermarket) is kind of a trope. I guess this type of setting is often used because of the different stuff you can improvise as a weapon.
The monster is pretty cool and unique but the camera shaking is kinda annoying.
Nice little indy horror movie. It makes use of short, tight, angled shots to make up for lower budget practical effects. Give this one a try if you like zombie movies but you've seen all of them before and/or body horror (a la The Thing).
Splinter is an enjoyable creature-feature horror film that provides the kind of entertainment you'd expect from such a movie, suited for a good Friday movie night.
This "movie" gets an F minus.
I really like this movie, it's underrated. The monster is awesome, the acting superb, the story is short but fast and works well. It's not perfect, but if you like creature features you'll like this movie.
It may not be an amazing horror flick with the acting being so-so and the plot being as standard as some thriller movies. However, the concept with the Parasite itself and how the build up goes is fun to get you sucked in. You can even say this movie can be a guilty pleasure to watch every year or so. 7/10.
How much action can you have in a convenience store? Yeah, the spikes were a cool concept - but it's basically like any other quarantine/disease film. Whether it's spores from an alien planet or a pandemic here on Earth, these films are all the same. Actually, add in a bit of zombie action, and that sums up "Splinter" in a nutshell. Considering it's a B-class, low budget film, it's actually pretty decent. I also enjoyed the surprises, and pending doom of not knowing what will happen next! That was a nice touch. And I like how the ending was a bit ambiguous - leaving the possibility for a part 2 (which I really hope they don't make!) RECOMMENDATION: I call these genre of movies, "background noise". Meaning, it doesn't require your full attention to understand what's going on, since 90% takes place in a gas station/convenience store. I played video games on my phone while this was on in the background - and I found it's a good way to pass the time!
Splinter relies on gore to produce scares and fails miserably at doing so. The movie plays out like it was written by an amateur, and the creature is laughable. Nothing is explained about its origins as the entire film unfolds in a creepy roadside gas station. I'm not sure why Splinter ended up on a top ten horror movies list, but it must've been by mistake.
I wasn't expecting much, just a gore fest with no story or characters. That is what I was expecting but I was wrong. First, amazing creature effects. The story is basic but good. The characters do the expected stupid things you would expect characters to do in a movie like this and I wish I knew more about the splinter monsters. What are they? Where do they come from? But it is scary and I jumped many times. Not great but still incredibly good and worth checking out for those who like good scary movies.
Movies in the "small cast being hunted by monster in the wilderness" genre may keep down production costs, but the limitations imposed by a small sandbox & fewer characters gives us fewer vectors with which to propel the story forward. We get a few "BAM" moments and then settle in to the "escape" part of the story...where the bounds of credulity start to be tested. It's fine for what it is, but don't expect anything you haven't seen before.
An unlikely couple consisting of the world's biggest nerd and the world's most obvious porn star find themselves yawning through some kind of mould plague or something. You would think the scientist boyfriend would find something clever to say occasionally, but mostly he's careening between "please kiss muh, guhlfruund" and "omg it's ... like ... a mould ... so we can, like ... freeze ourselves ... or something!"
Hard to watch because it's handheld the whole time, and it's on steroids most of the time, very shaky, but it's still a good movie. The acting is great, the concept is surprising enough to be compelling, and there's real emotion. Constanzo goes a long way towards giving this movie some pretty serious charm, like he does in anything he's in.
Really good watch, would watch again, and can recommend. While it may not sound like the most original concept, it definitely feels innovative. Using isolation to add atmosphere to the movie allows the movie to really focus the terror of infection, as opposed to zombie movies where it's usually about flooding the world with zombie infection. The movie has a great layered metaphor of Darwinism sliding from a might-makes-right attitude to having to be smart to survive. The experience really felt full for them being trapped in a convenience store. The cast did an excellent performance through the graduating series of events, and a rather strong story.
For what it was, that was pretty good. The shakey cam during the monster scenes was underwhelming and the dialogue had a tendency towards cheesy, but the pacing is great and the plot never tries to punch out of it's weight class. You could do a lot worse for a quick, fun horror movie.
i have a soft spot for this movie, partially because of the john carpenter inspired creature design. some cast members do a very reasonable job, but paul costanzo does this movie no favors. many decisions made by the two protagonists in particular are severely lacking in common sense, and it would have been nice to see someone trapping a sample and testing different chemicals from the gas station on it to see if it would die. anyways, if you liked "the thing", this is absolutely worth the relatively concise 80 minutes it will take of your time.
This movie is horrible. This movie is the fanasty of rich little kids who think thier mommies and daddies are gonna keep them safe forever. It's complete b.s..
Totally Unbelievable. Not the premise of this horror movie, the idea that she would be with that dip shit. "Oh look, he redeems himself after breaking the tent." Fuck off.
A fantastic scary as hell horror movie with mostly great effects. Its a well made movie and the characters are actually likeable which isnt seen much in horror movies at this time. The acting was well done and again most of the special effects are good looking. The way the creatures move is terrifying and the creature in this feature is one you NEVER want to encounter in real life.
