Summer Reviews
excellent film set on the grim wimpy estate in Bolsover Derbyshire. this estate four miles from my home truly is a rough area and the film accurately reflects the traumatic impact of the closure of the mining industry in the eighties

There are a few literal-minded scene-by-scene explanations too many; how undiagnosed dyslexia made a bad kid out of Shaun. It's a shame as they put the emotional heart of film at arm's-length.
Shaun (Robert Carlyle) looks back on a happy youthful summer and we find out why there is such a strong bond between him and his disabled best friend (Steve Evets), and how their lives came to turn out they way they did. Past and present are matched up beautifully as Shaun looks back at the best summer ever, whilst coping with the disaster of his real life.
Definately not a feel good movie, but captures the best of British Films. Grim English upbringing with dark humour. Think Kes and The Full Monty and if you liked them you'll enjoy this.
Grim, not enough humour to balance it out and didn't quite invoke that feeling of wistful childhood memory. Didn't really connect with the characters as much as i'd have liked to. Watch, but not on a Saturday night - the cold light of day would be a better place.
A mans life told from three different times, teenager, young adult and from the perspective of a grown man. I wouldn't say that this is a biopic. It's more of fragments of a mans life as he searches for his long lost love. This is a hard to explain movie as you probably can tell (or maybe just read somebodyelses review for more information). This is a solemn English movie with a dab of happieness from time til time so you don't start crying from the greyness. Indeed this plays out in the summer but it's not like any summer I've ever had.
I have been a fan of indie british films as they somehow manage to portray the image of life in a nutshell. As with Robert Carlyle, cannt remember any movie of his being bad. The story is as simple as it can get. Choices that life gives you..sometimes its not in your hands to grab the slice of pie when its put in front you. A very naive story told in a very subtle manner. A good watch.
a working class tale about life and family, robert carlisle ina good role, amoung the stories on show, mostly about illness, the brief running time,is also a facture in enjoyment, as it moves fast, and never outstays its welcome
Didn't see it to the end. Carlyle brilliant at the same old depressing thing. Very clever but why is this entertainment. Convincingly depressing ...... Not my choice of a good evening in.
