The Messenger Reviews

Feb 25, 2025

Slow and somewhat depressing drama. The two lead actors are really good but the whole thing just parks dark clouds over you and they don't move. Very few moments of levity throughout the entire film.

The movie lost me within the first 5 minutes. I prefer movies that tell a valuable story without marring it with un-needed bad language and immoral scenes. I suggest that there are better films to consider.

This was a small but lovely film. Most movies concentrate on the combat aspects of war, but this one dealt only with the aftermath. This movie never relied on typical Hollywood gimmicks, just the bare emotions that only the victims of war will ever understand. I've never seen Ben Foster before, but his performance was incredible, and Woody, well let's just say that this was the best acting of his life in a long a varied career. This is an important movie, by adults, for adults. Catch it.

A great story and realistic.

Films like this nicely provides depth behind a crucial job that we acknowledged and appropriately appreciate what surrounds the associated tasks that the assigned person has to perform. The picture here impeccably outlined the narrative that thoroughly expressed the involved lengths between professional ethics and bending attached morality, next to personal hardships that dynamically collaborates as perspective heal. Genuinely dark via sympathy in a timely matter as the deliverances were sharply executed just as realistically for hard-hitting resonance whilst attempting to represent different cases. Mainly elevated by the paired chemistry of Foster and Harrelson at one of their finest feats in exceptionally capturing what the job tends to hold. (A-)

This film reminded me a little of a 온라인카지노추천 film called 'Resting Place', which I very much liked. It focusses primarily on the perhaps somewhat stereotyped(?) macho masculine persona of the American army/military, in the form of Captain Tony Stone (played by Woody Harrelson. Harrelson is an actor I am generally quite keen on - his presence made me more curious to see it) having to supervise and train staff sergeant Will Montgomery (played by Ben Foster) in relaying the tragic loss of a loved one to their next of kin, in a very specific, no-frills, procedural way. Steve Buscemi is also in the cast, playing a relative of alot fighter called Dale Martin and Samantha Morton gives a solid performance as Olivia Pitterson. I also like films with a moral/ethical aspect to it, which this does have. I found some of the plot details frustrating, certainly not in terms of believability, sadly, more so in terms of what it's shining a light on. It's an understandably sobering watch, not a war based action thriller but in terms of the themes and realities depicted. I won't go into any additional level of detail, for obvious spoiler reasons. The acting is good and its certainly a thought provoking watch, so I'd recommend it on that basis.

5.7/10 — "Mediocre"/"Passable"

Not quite enough for 4 stars, but this film was worth seeing, in my view. It gives some very real insights into the soldier's process upon returning to the calm of home, and finding very real chaos still inside. This film is slow at points for sure, covers very tough material, and shows a ton of heart. I expect that it will be quite divisive with some audiences because it is paced slowly and the main characters (Foster and Harrelson) are maybe a bit hard to empathize with at times, especially at first.

Samantha Morton is a helluva actress. Every role she just seems so natural, at ease with who she is that time. Shows remarkable range- of empathy, of perceptiveness, and experience. Marry that to Woody Harrelson at the top of his game and as good a performance as I can recall from Foster and you have the makings of a strong film from the standpoint of your key lineup of players. The Messenger also has a winning, authentic screenplay and fine work behind the camera from director Moverman. Heavy stuff handled with taste, maturity, guttural reality and subtlety. 3.8 stars

I would say a MUST SEE for every single American living in our country that have NO clue to what this is like. I am X Army, married to Vietnam Vet, but I never went to war, nor had a friend die in war. I cannot imagine the pain. The movie brought me to tears over and over. So well acted and cast! Lord have mercy, should be requirement for every American!

Obviously not a happy tale, but a powerful one with some great performances. It does drag at times.

It looks like a very realistic portrayal of soldiers' lives after returning home. The insanity of war never ends for them. The acting is fantastic, and not just from the always excellent Harrelson, but the lesser known ones, too.

A decent, well acted drama which starts off brilliantly with some gut-wrenching scenes, but I felt it began to lose its steam and direction as it progresses into the third act. Still worth a watch. 3.5/5*

The simplicity of the story does not ruin the movie, if anything it enhances the acting and the dialogs.

Chose this for my annual Memorial Day war movie. Definitely an interesting and educational take on the aftermath of war. Superb acting all around. Very dark though. A heavy movie to watch.

Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson did a great job in portraying the human side of messenger of griefs. An absolutely essential job but also so so tough to bring news of sorrow to new people everyday. Though the rule is not to get emotionally involved with the grieving NOK to the casualties, the messengers are humans after all. Must be tough for these messengers of grief to get a breather with war raging in the middle east for so many years now with no end in sight. Even now, Trump is pushing his Nato allies to send more soldiers to Afghanistan to fight an unwinnable war that will go on forever.

Very good acting, didn't care for the woman, but emotional and powerful, realistic

Nov 3, 2016

Real and moving; however, most will not see the value contained due to the lack of bells and whistles.

Gripping but wonderfully done well

Um baita roteiro e grandes atuações da dupla protagonista, nesse filme pontual e necessário.
