Prodigal Sons Reviews
While not exactly a relaxing viewing experience, this film proves once again that you can't make this stuff up. I found this family to be so loving and noble...it often moved me to tears. Be sure to watch the church service in the "bonus" section of the DVD. It was the perfect coda to the film. Highly recommended.

This is a personal documentary that is moving and very revealing. Well filmed with a look back that really opens up the story in a realistic and loving way. The most surprising part is the love of friends and acquaintances in the small town that Kimberly was brought up in. One actually feels sorry for Marc more than the hurt of Kimberly. Nibbles: Beef Burgundy.
Poorly made. The estranged brother is no more interesting to watch than stupid is. The Director was hoping that the brother's search for his true parents and his connection to a legendary film director would make this film, because other than that revelation, there is nothing else to maintain any level of focus. Lack of brain cells all around
This film! The intricacies of this family really surprised me... and their difficulties are explored in such a touching way. I love the camerawork and editing... they create an intimacy while maintaining the respect of distance. Kimberly Reed has done amazing work in sharing her story here, in all of its heartbreaking and resilient detail, and I am so glad I came across this documentary.
A trans woman's visit to her rural Montana high school reunion is the least interesting event in this film. After a while, however, her brother's antics become simply too much to take.
An interesting documentary that tackles many issues: transgender transition, sibling rivalry, adoption, and mental illness. A look inside a very dysfunctional family. It struck me as odd how little the family understands the brother's condition. They try to reason with him like he's in his right mind.
I had been looking forward to seeing this movie for some time after seeing it featured on Oprah. I'm a big fan of documentaries and this one had a great hook. Star Montana QB (Kimberly Reed) comes back to his hometown after transitioning from male to female. There were some good moments in the film but it really did not have much to do with Kimberly and her transition, rather it focused almost solely on her family relationship with her brother who has serious emotional and mental issues, partially as a result of a car accident when he was a teen. The film felt more reality show to me rather than documentary and in that sense it came across as intrusive and exploitative. Perhaps my expectations were too high.
Good documentary dealing with the directors own gender identity and her adopted brothers search for an identity of his own.
what starts off as a doc on gender identity and transgender issues takes a dramatic turn involving identity as a whole and of all people, ORSON WELLES !!!..interesting but ultimately extremely frustrating and sometimes even cringe worthy awkwardness..but the surprize twist and an appearance by Oja Kodar makes it def worth a peek..Oja looks fantastic!
"Prodigal Sons" is an emotional and personal documentary that despite its insight is actually a little hard to watch at times. In it, Kimberly Reed, a magazine editor living in New York City, is returning to Helena, Montana for her 20th high school reunion to see many of her old classmates for the first time since she transitioned from a man to a woman. For the most part, they are accepting, although there is a little confusion around the whole girlfriend thing. The same cannot be said for her adopted brother Marc who she has not talked to in about ten years. The origins of this can be traced back to when Kim(then called Paul) was the center of attention and starting quarterback of the high school football team. Through a strange twist of fate, Marc finally gets the limelight. Sadly, this does not help with the healing of this long simmering family conflict, which is exacerbated by brain injuries and the resultant trauma Marc suffered in a car accident. Like Kim says with sad irony, there is psychological phrase for who she is but none for Marc's condition.
I thought this documentary was staged when i saw it but i looked it up and its not at all. Astonishingly surreal true story and not at all what you think its going to be about in the beginning.
It's pretty much everything it purports to be - the transexual transition, the Orson Welles connection, the sibling rivalry - no more, no less.
