It's always nice to to go back to the classics when it comes to horror movies and this is one of them!

Carrie was first novel published by Stephen King. This movie is still scary as hell. Out of all the prom movies that were made this is among the best. There are probably a lot of critics that would disagree. And think the movie is dated. You can tell from the clothes, the music, etc that it's definitely from the '70s. But there's a reason why this film is such a cult classic. Sissy Spacek gives 110% into this movie. She stayed in character on and off the set. PJ Soles a forgotten Scream Queen is in this movie. So were Nancy Allen, Piper Laurie, John Travolta Amy Irving & William Katt. They were pretty awesome in this film. One of the scariest parts of the movie is Piper Laurie's over the top performance. The soundtrack even gives you chills. The special effects are probably not the best. But pretty good considering it was made in the 1970s. There were a lot of remakes. But you can't improve on a classic. This movie probably has one of the best horror movie endings of all time. The ending even made Stephen King jump out of his seat when he saw the film.

Carrie stands as a seminal 1970s classic that features an annihilating performance from Sissy Spacek. She brings all the fire, terror, and a compelling victimized narrative that flames as one of the best Stephen King adaptations and best horror films I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. Grading: A

One of the best Steven King book adaptations in my opinion. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie are phenomenal in their rolls and the movie has one of the best endings ever

My first watch of this movie was in November 2024 after watching Psycho and Psycho 2 for the first time. This movie is right up my alley, and it is a crime that I have never seen it before. Let me start with the bad: Why is there a highschool girls shower scene? There is a lot of sexualization of the adult actresses playing underage girls. The rest of this movie more than makes up for this major flaw. It has some incredible camera work, the pacing is perfect, the characters are all fun, the costumes are great, and the music is awesome. There is only 20 minutes left of the movie and I'm hooked.

Brian De Palma's Carrie (1976) remains an iconic adaptation of Stephen King's novel, blending psychological horror with deeply human themes of alienation and vengeance. The film’s portrayal of high school life, social cruelty, and supernatural terror is deeply affecting, resonating with audiences even decades later. From its infamous opening locker room scene to the chaotic prom climax, De Palma's direction demonstrates a masterful control of mood and pacing. The visual style, characterized by long takes, slow motion, and the daring use of split-screen during the prom sequence, creates a cinematic experience that is both intimate and expansive. These techniques pull viewers into Carrie’s inner world while amplifying the horror of her ultimate revenge. The production itself is a marvel for its time, achieving a balance between the surreal and the real. The careful choreography of the prom scene, where chaos is unleashed in a ballet of destruction, reflects De Palma’s meticulous eye for detail and his ability to innovate under pressure. It’s worth noting that some of the film's most memorable sequences, like the split-screen prom massacre, arose out of budgetary constraints—proving De Palma's ability to turn limitations into creative triumphs. The performances elevate the material further, with Sissy Spacek's portrayal of Carrie standing out as both vulnerable and haunting. The supporting cast effectively embodies the oppressive social dynamics of high school, creating a believable and suffocating environment for the protagonist. Understanding De Palma’s personal history adds another layer to the film’s intensity. His exposure to the visceral realities of his father’s work as a surgeon shaped his comfort with the graphic and the grotesque, evident in the film’s bloody moments. Additionally, De Palma's own experience trailing his father to uncover an affair—an event he later described as formative—infuses his work with themes of voyeurism, psychological tension, and human frailty. These personal elements lend Carrie a raw authenticity that transcends its horror genre trappings. Despite the controversy surrounding its explicit content, Carrie avoids gratuity in favor of storytelling. De Palma’s bold choices underscore the film’s central themes rather than overshadow them, making it as much a character study as a tale of terror. The film's success helped cement his reputation as a provocative yet deeply skilled filmmaker, unafraid to explore the darker corners of human experience. Revisiting Carrie highlights why it remains a classic. Its blend of compelling performances, innovative cinematography, and psychological depth sets it apart not only from other adaptations of King’s novel but also from modern horror films attempting similar themes. De Palma’s ability to channel his personal experiences into his art gives Carrie an emotional resonance and cinematic flair that continues to captivate audiences.

Although it is slow at times, the tension and build-up are worth it in the end. The way the story unfolds allows for a deeper connection with the characters, making the climax all the more impactful. As the plot thickens, you find yourself fully immersed in the unfolding drama, eagerly anticipating each twist and turn. Ultimately, the payoff leaves a lasting impression, reminding us that sometimes the journey can be just as important as the destination.

The first ever adaptation of a Stephen King novel. It has stylish direction by Brian De Palma (Murder à la Mod, Get to Know Your Rabbit) and two fantastic oscar nominated performances

Great Cast. Worth a Watch.

70% of this is spent building up to the final 20 minutes. It's really a teen drama most of the time. A beautifully shot, masterfully directed one. The camerawork, framing, lighting, special effects, are all top notch and so memorable. The soundtrack is amazing also. Spacek is incredible in this and is along with De Palma the best thing this has that makes this crazy story work and keep it grounded. Everyone is really good but Sissy just steals it and is unforgettable as Carrie. It's an emotionla roller coaster watching her. You feel sorry, happy, worried, horrified, and thrilled. If there is onfault in this it's in the middle it gets a little bit jumpy cutting between the other girls setting up everything but the direction carries it through. Also, as with quite a few King novel's the powers are never explained, only vague ideas are suggested. How you feel about that will determine your love of the film like most of his works. But when it's really well done it's so easy not only to suspend your disbelief but become immersed in it. This is one of the most unique Horror films I've seen. It's so deeply disturbing and a introverts worst nightmare and also the ultimate payback. It's a character study on the fallout from being raised and treated as a social otkast and a deconstruction. The 15 minute stretch of the prom with no dialouge is so masterfully done as well visually storytelling wise. The slow motion in this especially in the opening scene is so well done. There isn't a lot of gore or even horror in this. And yet it somehow lingers and stays with me more than 99% of other horror flicks and it's so hard to put a finger on why. Maybe because it's so relatable, maybe Sissy's performance which rivals Anthony Perkins & Hopkins in terms of how seering it is? How unforgiving it is? How well directed and set up? Maybe a bit of all that? I'm not sure. Plenty of other horror flicks have those traits also but they just don't leave a mark like this does. And I don't know if I'll ever know why it does on such a deep level. It's something everyone should give a try once. Warning: This is disturbing though.

This is a must watch, Sissy Spacek gives a stunning performance. Iconic.

Ok just watched it, great build up, and the ending was of course the best part of the movie. Maybe my decision is a bit influenced by the expactations i had, that it would be more gory and that she would go on a killing spree halfway theoguh the film, i thought its gonna be like sleepaway camp. But its fine how it is, phenomanal writing and great cinematography for a movie from that time

Classic horror film. Funny at times and suspenseful. The prom scene is epic.

It's impossible to fathom that this movie is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Virtually everything about it has aged so beautifully that I think I'm ready to declare this the best horror film of the 70s, a designation that 1978's HALLOWEEN has held in my heart for many years. Both are masterpieces of the genre, but CARRIE just feels a bit more complex and emotionally engaging, something rare in a horror movie. Continuing with the hyperbole, I think it's also the best cinematic Stephen King adaptation - by a comfortable margin. In an era of school shootings and teenage violence, it now takes on a new and rather deeper perspective that probably wasn't intended, at least so specifically. Watching Carrie's climactic eruption brought upon by the merciless taunts of her classmates feels a lot more disturbing now. Spacek is extraordinary - I'm considering adding her to my All-Time Great Performances series - and although technically the "villain" of the piece, she brings such humanity and vulnerability to the role, one can't help but sympathize. Laurie is also fantastic in a performance that could have gone completely haywire but miraculously feels rooted in reality. Both were justifiably Oscar nominated. Director DePalma's joy and brilliance at filmmaking abound throughout, from camera shots to split screens to subtle and not so subtle homages to Hitchcock. I'm generally not a fan of the horror genre, but I think this is one of the few examples that transcends its roots and enters into the arena of true art.
