El productor Jerry Bruckheimer vuelve a traer a la vida la saga de Cat People 40 años después de que iniciaría con una de las películas más conocidas del director Jacques Tourneur. La secuela que tuvo la película original en 1944 no fue lo suficientemente satisfactoria para continuar la saga y Cat People quedo casi en el olvido. Con esta recreación de la película original decidieron revivir la saga y trataron de ofrecer algo más sensual y aterrador que la película de Tourneur. Algo que lograron conseguir fue ofrecer un buen elenco y una genial banda sonora que cuenta con una canción original de David Bowie. La película no se despega del suspenso y el factor psicológico, pero mantiene un buen ritmo para poder adentrarse más en la mente de Irena. La película original se enfocaba bastante en el desarrollo de la relación entre Irena y Oliver. Aquí no se enfoca tanto en eso y la película quería ofrecer una visión mucho actual para la historia. En la película original, los detonantes principales para la transformación de Irena eran el amor, la lujuria y los celos. Esta película aprovecha más los primeros dos. Muestran claramente como el deseo sexual y el afecto que Irena tiene hacia Oliver detonan la transformación que sufre ella y supieron desarrollar eso. Querían que la película fuera erótica para poder enfatizar bastante en ese deseo que convierte a Irena y su hermano en felinos, pero la película no se enfoca tanto en el erotismo y eso es utilizado al último momento. Por medio de los efectos especiales fue posible ver las transformaciones de humano a felino. En la película original no se podía ver a Irena transformándose y se jugaba más con la idea de que Irena o una pantera que escapo del zoológico era la que desataba el terror. Aquí prefirieron darle más importancia a la mitología que la película original ofrecía. La obra de Tourneur presentaba el mito basándose en una maldición hereditaria que obligaba a cierto individuo a convertirse en felino por medio del impulso sexual. El lore de esta versión ochentera es diferente y en ella la situación es al revés. Aquí más bien son los felinos lo que usan un disfraz humano que les ha sido otorgado por las almas de aquellos que les fueron ofrecidos en sacrificio. Claro que la escena de la autopsia y las transformaciones dan a entender que tanto la apariencia humana como la apariencia felina actúan como crisálidas. Al igual que en la película original, el impulso sexual es lo que detona la transformación, pero el único detalle es que esa transformación se puede evitar por medio del incesto. Esto se vuelve algo bastante fuerte para la mente de Irena y le da un cierto toque trágico digno de cualquier historia de la época griega o medieval que haya involucrado dicho tabú. Más perturbador es también el hecho de que estos felinos solo pueden tomar forma humana después de que matan a alguien. Esto es una buena adición porque la película original no especificaba si recuperar la forma humana era algo voluntario o algo aleatorio. Lo que no es muy claro es por qué Irena acaba aceptando su naturaleza felina tras aquella sublime secuencia del sueño donde descubre sus raíces. La película sin duda es prometedora al principio, pero ya cuando le toca a Irena ser el siguiente felino, la película pierde un poco el rumbo y cae en algo menos memorable. Quizás la falta de desarrollo en la relación entre Irena y Oliver es lo que hace que los últimos 30 minutos de película no generen tanta expectativa como al inicio. Así que Cat People (1982) es en parte mejor que la película original en cuanto la forma en que ejecuta el mito, pero también es una película poco trascendental. Es una recreación decente de una película clásica y solo eso. Valdría la pena verla por las estupendas actuaciones de Nastassja Kinski y Malcolm McDowell, los efectos especiales y la maravillosa canción original de David Bowie. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 8/10.

The beauty of Natassja Kinski is not enough to raise this unfortunate remake above the level of a simple exploitation horror flick.

You'll either find it's pseudo art house style and psychosexual thriller plot intriguing or laughable. I fall into the former but wouldn't blame anyone for dismissing it. Ultimately I think Schrader does a good job of expanding on the original's premise and having Kinski didn't hurt.

geweldig net als wolven houw ik ook van die krachtige en machtig dier er zitten goed speciale effecten in maar ja niet iedereen kan deze film waarderen de sex de horror toch twee dingen die in het leven ook voorkomen maar ja. zou wel eens graag de specials van deze film willen zien gelijk was het dier echt of een computer animatie? het is eigenlijk een speciale horror ja thriller horror drama thriller. een jonge vrouw word verliefd op een jonge op zich normaal maar deze vrouw is niet zoals iedereen ze is net als haar broer een panter niets mis maar ze mogen enkel de liefde bedrijven met elkander buiten hen is het taboe. niet enkel de film is goed ook nog een een goede soundtrack Bowie maar ook de rest is goed gewoon geweldig

Paul Schrader directs Malcom McDowell, Natassaja Kinski, John Heard, Annette O' Toole in a horror tale of romance and animal primitiveness Irena Galiler reconnects with her estranged brother (most disturbingly of all they develop an attraction towards one another) A zoologist named Oliver has Irena's attention even as her sibling starts making advances continuously A black leopard is seen prowling around New Orleans, Oliver and his team try to take care of it but it goes out of control disappearing every now and then Irena is fascinated by the giant cat The biggest thing though is that both Irena and her brother are actually part of a long race of ancient beings resembling giant felines It's only a matter of time before both their inner instincts bring out the beasts; they can only procreate with each other since their souls share the cats' bodies and have to kill before becoming human again The movie only has some of the supernatural stuff in spades So keep in mind you won't see a lot of creature transformations yet the practical effects are neat enough when they do happen The score is really good here too as is the main theme song by David Bowie There's also enough to leave to the human imagination whether or not the cat creatures actually exist as humans It's got enough provocative style to stand out from the 1942 original too Kinski's performance is wildly hypnotic going from sweet, fragile to cold and alluring It's hard to not look away from her The ending takes a more sweet romantic approach to solving this woman's dilemma having this curse rather than the typical tragedy you'd expect Sure it's uneven by not focusing on the siblings more as much as the supernatural horror bits being more prevalent But this works as a troubled romance next to a conflict of man or in this case woman vs beast Good blend of mysticism and animal sexuality Lovers of the original who appreciate the psychological aspects may turn this one down but this is a decent remake regardless

A sexy thriller that has a beautiful woman moving to New Orleans to meet her long lost brother, but of course they are both… you guessed it, cat people. So-so acting, good effects, but nothing too ground-breaking.

Good for about two viewings, but any more than that would be torture

Paul Schrader's remake of Val Lewton's 1940s production of Cat People is a huge disappointment. Irena and Paul are siblings, reunited after being separated many years earlier. Irena is a virgin, celibate for reasons she has difficulty articulating. Paul is intent on pursuing an incestuous relationship with his sister for reasons he can explain, but just don't make much sense. And they both have the ability to turn into panthers. Lousy performances throughout are consistent with a lousy script filled with pointless and/or insanely awkward dialogue, such as the sage advice of "pretend the world is what men think it is." There is the obligatory gore, some attempts at suspense that are ruined by Giorgio Morodor's score, and some unintentional laughs. Check out the original and take a pass on this kitty litter.

Plot is ludicrous but always compelling and had me at the edge of my seat; super cast from leads to supporting characters

It may be too disturbing and strange for some, but with a gritty and provocative style, a solid direction, a well-crafted narrative and an unhinged lead performance from Natassja Kinski, it's a must-watch for horror enthusiasts.

I think this film has an interesting style. Semi-art house, psycho sexual, thriller. Lurid and it is either intriguing or laughable. Which ever camp you fall into is fine. I felt this could have been close to a 90 minute movie. It kinda outstayed its welcome at the end. The music is perhaps somewhat better then the film. Instantly recognisable theme song by David Bowie! Fantastic. All in all, it might well be worth a watch. If only for the theme song. But there are better choices out there.

In the past month, I've now watched four movies with "cat" in the title, and somehow, this is neither the most titillating (an honor that goes to FRITZ) nor the most horrifying (that would be the nightmare that is CATS), though it does score points for the all too brief Bowie/Moroder theme.
