Dangerous Liaisons Reviews

Feb 22, 2025

This is a horror film. The more I watched and witnessed the soulless and depraved scheming of Merteuil and Valmont, the more frightened I became. The confrontational war scene between the two made my blood run cold. A wonderful film, beautifully made, and a horrifying study of people who can’t be saved or redeemed by love.

Beautiful movie. Loved to see the classic, royal family has many obstacles and dealing with them.

Thoughtful delve into an organization often seen as doing harm - after watching they seem very much like a non-violent grassroots organization hoping for freedom of expression.

Hard to resist the screenplay's mean spirited wit. Glenn Close truly gives one of the great performances ever here.

Classy, intellectual movie with awesome king and storyline.

Very enjoyable period piece with acerbic sexual politics icily cutting through the dialogue. Some wicked truisms are found amongst the screenplay and the acting from an A grade cast is fittingly good excellent (Glenn Close deserves particular mention). Found it for a £1 on DVD.

Really enjoyed this film! Beautiful scenery and great acting, particularly by Glenn Close and John Malkovich. Close was her usual awesome self and Malkovich played a revolting brat perfectly, both talented and so much fun! If you liked "Cruel Intentions" and are into period pieces, this may be worth your time.

Glenn Close y John Malkovich se dedican a torturar moralmente a Michelle Pfiffer y Uma Thurman (para torturarse entre ellos) + Keanu Reeves en el papel más adorable de su carrera, genial :)

A fascinating story, with strong performances, but it's hard to believe that Malkovich's odious Valmont is such a seducer. He's unattractive, slimey and without charm. His desire for Merteuil (Glenn Close) is also a bit of a stretch, as he manipulates and rejects great beauties (Michelle Pfeiffer! Uma Thurman!) in his attempts to win her. The latter two change their attitudes and behavior toward him so suddenly that it defies logic. Misogyny and rape are not particularly entertaining. The costumes are fantastic, and I love Ms. Close, but no aristocrat of 18th century France would have such sun-damaged skin. And the American accents are a huge distraction. It's hard to suspend one's disbelief.

Fascinating story, great acting by John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Keanu Reeves, Glenn Close and Uma Thurman were perfectly cast. Costumes, hair styles of that time and camera shots well done. A powerful lesson to learn here!

I thought Glenn Close and John Malkovich both gave very good performances in this film - they have decent on screen chemistry and I can't deny Malkovich does the 'death stare' particularly effectively. Also present is a young Peter Capaldi and an even younger Keanu Reeves, who swordfights in one scene. The period costumes and settings are good and the dialogue is quite good (somewhat thought provoking) at times. I suppose its about a power play, asserting authority over others. Yes I'd recommend this film, for the performances alone. If I were to describe it (plot wise) in a few words, it'd be 'subtle scheming plans play out'.

Glenn Close's plans are a-brewing while John Malkovich is screwing. Compared to the vast majority of its contemporaries, Dangerous Liaisons is a massive success on one key element; most film adaptations of theatrical productions are so fearful of originality that they essentially just end up as standard renditions of plays with high-quality sets that happen to be performed with a camera present. In contrast, Hampton's screenplay builds a truly cinematic tale with grand gardens and gilded halls for the depraved upper crust to wander and deceive each other. While appropriately richly costumed, with overall high production value and carrying all the hallmarks of a well-realized adaptation on the surface, Dangerous Liaisons shines the brightest at a base character level - it's a debauched battle of wits between Close's Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil and Malkovich's Vicomte Sébastien de Valmont, in a world of privilege where the sole distractions are personal pleasures and sociopathic degradation of others. The conflict, initially playful before turning sinister, is so clearly their own creation (and the outcomes are thus their own fault) is based on emotional manipulation, deception, and pure pride. Initially both self-assured of their own skill in generating influence, by the film's conclusion you'll relish in the moments when their seemingly impenetrable armor begins to crack. Close fits the role perfectly, but that's to be expected from her; honestly, this might be Malkovich's single greatest performance, a deceptive man with slime in his veins but covered in superficial charm whose sole purpose in life is sexual conquest despite a scandalous reputation. The 'dirty laundry of elites' has been low-hanging fruit for cheap entertainment forever, but Dangerous Liaisons leans more towards delicious venom than controversy alone. And yes, Swoosie Kurtz is the real name of a real actress. (3.5/5)

I think without casting Malkovich as the romantic lead this would've come off as a very bland interpretation of its raunchy source material. His voice when playing the villain is wildly underrated and I didn't have any trouble at all believing he'd talked his way into bed the way his character is supposed to do. The girls were all excellent casting decisions too... Keanu was not, but he hadn't provided his entire 90s filmography as evidence of that yet, so it can be forgiven. The main compliment I would pay to the movie as a whole is that I was still thinking about it a few days later and it grew on me a little bit; when I was in the middle of watching it I felt like they'd stretched a relatively brief plot into a two-hour melodrama.

Fantastic movie. Incredibly well made for sure, with a superb script, but is carried by mindblowingly good performances from John Malkovich and Glenn Close.

Released only a year after another acclaimed Close performance in another erotically themed film, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons had me worried from the start given my disliking for the former. I came to be pleasantly surprised by a story that became more engaging, thought-provoking, and original (yes, it is based off of a play, but in terms of period pieces) as time went on. Admittedly, the beginning was probably a bit weak. One feels at the beginning a sense that what is unfolding onscreen is only the manifestation of some French history enthusiast's sexual fantasies with scarcely a thought given to characterisation or the like. Instead, all four or five central characters receive clear, strong, unpredictable arcs providing satisfaction. The performances are all solid to exceptional. The Oscar-nominated Close offers a superbly sinister take, whilst the other lead, Malkovich, is a bit hard to take seriously. Perhaps the hindsight of his later career with films such as Rounders and Being John Malkovich turned him into too much of a comic figure to allow his acting to work here. Although Pfeiffer gives a good performance herself, the chemistry and entire structuring of the relationship with Malkovich does not quite work. The youthful Reeves and Thurman do well in smaller roles, Thurman more so as a naïve, awkward youngster deviating greatly from well-known turns in films such as Pulp Fiction. Peter Capaldi is also here. Surprisingly, he has little to do. Overall, the progression of the story transcends my mentioned weakness and the film is good. Unlike the aforementioned Fatal Attraction, the sexual content mostly extends beyond gratuity and likely invents far less falsehoods of old-fashioned sexual politics than fans of tamer period dramas would care to acknowledge. This willingness to explore the darkness and extract the unique potential from its story renders this effort a success in an unexpected manner.

Fleshy alabaster skin plays in each outré fancy, blank eroticism, a neurotic virgin and the damnable royal. Performances stunningly sociopathic, past the superficial naiveté and glitzy décor. Even when the tête-à-tête lingers mind-numbing, an eccentric's doubt lingers longer.
