The Getaway Reviews

…another masterclass in minimalist cool from Steve McQueen, whose presence makes The Getaway something of a blast despite some caveats about the more challenging side of 1972’s sexual politics…

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 22, 2025

Measured against the earlier reunion after Doc leaves prison and the two make love in a lake and retire to a small room, this violence seems all the more horrifying...

This is the most completely commercial film Peckinpah has made, and his self-parasitism gives one forebodings of emptiness... The Getaway is long and dull and has no reverberations except of other movies, mostly by Peckinpah.

There ends up being enough good ingredients to make for a tasty crime thriller. Perhaps not as good as it could have been, but tasty nonetheless.

It's fast, furious, full of shoot-outs and car chases, lovely little side-forays into suspense and irony, and tidbits of genuine humor.

Still the best action movie I've ever seen.

A gripping thriller.

| Original Score: B | Apr 7, 2013

...ultimately comes off as an above-average thriller that's elevated by the inclusion of several electrifying sequences and an expectedly charismatic turn from Steve McQueen.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 29, 2009

The Getaway scores a triple play: It's a good character examination, a good relationship study, and a good action flick.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Mar 5, 2007

Relentlessly depicts ruthless robbery and murder, not to mention adultery, kidnaping, bribery, extortion, and general mayhem. The vivid direction and lightning pace, however, make the film completely fascinating.

Tough as nails and very effective.

The action and the violence of The Getaway are supported by no particular themes whatsoever. The movie just unravels.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 9, 2005

simply too contrived to be taken seriously

| Original Score: 3/5 | May 1, 2005

The Getaway is a big, glossy, impersonal mechanical toy. It's like one of those devices for executive desks, with the stainless steel balls on the strings: It functions with great efficiency but doesn't accomplish anything.
