The Haunting Reviews

Apr 16, 2025

Possible the best ghost story ever filmed. Being old (1963) and being low budget it relies on imagination and is not spoilt by special effects.

I didn’t find it particularly scary and not much happens. However, it is a good film with a spooky atmosphere, period charm and set in a great location. I found the main character somewhat annoying. Her internal monologue was disturbing and she’s certainly believable as a crazy person, but she’s also a bit obnoxious.

Scared the hell out of me

Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson (author of "The Lottery") its an excellent movie that doesn't get its due. One of my top ten faves.

First few times it scared me. Not only good acting but haunting musical score. Seems like a lot of Americans need more gore and violence in their movies these days, whereas I'm opposite, the scariest movies have some finess; it's not what you see but what you don't see. This movie is like that. And it is a psychological study. Each character has some hidden depths. Julie Harris does a great job. While Dr Markaway reminds me of both Clark Gable and Ernest Hemingwway. Another great directorial effort by Wise.

When I look at this film again after 50 years of seeing it I see why it was such a favorite of mine in the genre. Considering all the cgi and special effects of todays films this little gem managed to ackieve its goal of scarying the pants off us by the simplist of effects such as a great storyline, sound, camera techniques and the brilliance of two gifted actors whose interactions enhanced it especially Blooms internal dialogue. The recounting of the legend at the start with the history of the tragedies that befell all its vistors including its owner set the stage for the belief that it was truly malignant and evil in its nature even prior to these events. A simple ghost story brilliantly executed, suspending our sense of disbelief and a type of film that we should see more often but rarely do. Another one similar to it was the B&W version of the innocents

Film doesnt follow its own plot apart from one point where one character mentioned geometric flaws in construction of the place. Movie did one good job to create fear. Apart from Doctor, none of them was qualified for the job and even at the end of the movie, doctor declared place is haunted without an emperical data to support. Lead character was traumatised and found psychological relief in that place. She had no other place where she could relate to so she wants to stay. I think director was fascinated by hitchcooks work

- Hot doc - Queercoding - The kind of acting that you can't decide whether it's good or bad Everything a person could ask for in an old movie (especially of the horror variety).

A fairly stuffy and dull affair, albeit one with great camera work and one or two iconic set-pieces.

One of the scariest, pure-suspense - no monsters, no gore, no actual visible ghosts - just actors, sets, and very effective sound effects & score. A definite fave.

I saw the remake first, & yeah, this one was way better! So much atmosphere, doing so much with so little! It's a classic!

One of my favorite horror movies. It proves you don't have to see any boogeymen to be terrified.

I think this is based on Monster House.

very chilling and even close to being disturbing.

Sure, the story has been told countless times in the past, but it's rarely been executed as effectively as it is in Robert Wise's The Haunting. When four individuals decide to investigate paranormal activity in a decidedly creepy New England mansion, they run into more than they could have ever bargained for. Eschewing the standard jump scares, spewing blood and pulsing music score, the movie establishes a genuinely frightening atmosphere via odd camera angles, atmospheric lighting, a great performance from Julie Harris, and some stellar black and white cinematography. Interestingly, Wise followed up this horror movie classic with the saccharine The Sound of Music.

The cast was exceptional, Robert Wise was warming up for the Sound of Music, and the script was based on a Shirley Jackson story, so the movie had a lot going for it. And for those who believe in haunted houses it's a real treat. But for the rest of us it's questionable.

Hands down my favorite horror movie of all time! it has great characters, a fantastic plot and mystery that is ripe for the theorizing, and wonderful camera work. this is probably the closest i'll get to calling a horror movie a masterpiece. And i still can't believe this movie is rated G.

Ace director Robert Wise's adaptation of Shirley Jackson's timeless classic "The Haunting of Hill House" shows beyond doubt that it is his magnum opus!

A bit slow in the beginning but turns into a mind bending horror film. Much better than the 1999 redo. Get some popcorn it's worth a view in the dark in the night.
