House of Wax Reviews
This '50s film is one of the first color films I've seen from the '50s. The story is fairly classic, following the life of a zany artist who creates wax models with almost maniacal care and wishes to bring them to life. Following a disagreement with his partner, the latter burns down his wax museum and him in it. He escapes, but has gone mad. And so begins a veritable vendetta, in which he finds all those responsible for his misfortune and kills them to make them part of his masterpiece, his museum of wax horrors! Vincent Price is as masterful and frightening as ever; the story sounds like a Hammer horror tale, really nice to watch, but not as good as The House on Haunted Hill.
This movie is ok, It was my first time watching Vincent price house of wax (1953), It's a remake of the 1933 mystery of the wax museum, I need to check that one out too, I still like the 2005 remake though, But this one was pretty good.
This was a part of SvenGoolie. The master of horror Vincent Price. So much better than the Paris Hilton remake. I love the style of it. Def one of the horror classics. 7.4/10 it's really good.
This has to be one of my all-time favorite Vincent Price films. I truly enjoy watching it.
Classic horror film, don't understand how anyone can dislike this film. Storyline is great, the effects for the time are great.
A Horror Classic. Really well done across the board. The setting is memorable, The killer is really good, the special effects are really good also especially the opening fire sequence. It's a really clever idea and it works great on the big screen. There's something inherently creepy about wax figures and this capitalizes on that with a reallly creepy and disturbing plot. No jumpscares and minimal gore with a pretty good plot twist that may seem obvious or might not. Were led to believe Price is the killer but it throws enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Vincent Price is excellent in this and is easily the best thing. Whenever he's on screen it's at it's best. Everyone else is good but no one is as meorable as Price and whenever it isn't focused on him which is probably half the film it isn't as strong. It's still good though thanks to the solid direction and interesting plot. Also, the killer scenes feel like a completely different film at times compared to the main wax museum storyline as well. The 3D gimmicks really don't add much here and seeing it in normally it really isn't that big a distraction here as it's pretty minimal actually from what I can tell. The only real obvious part is the paddleball guy who was amusing to his credit. But all comes together well in the end. Anyone who is a horror fan, fan of any actors in this, or the director should check this out.
Acceptable. Maybe above average for its time. I really liked the opening sequence. The problem with this film is that very early on you know the conclusion to the film and the question then just becomes when will they get there and how? Unfortunately that journey was neither interesting, or thought provoking. I'd skip this film unless you have a good reason.
This film came out 10 years before I was born. I have loved watching it over and over. I cannot tell you the amount of times I have watched House of Wax. Vincent Price absolutely rocked in this film. The writing and cinematography make this a most enjoyable experience for horror classic.
Watchable thriller, No real surprises, Lots of 3D moments, Most impressive are the set design and wax figures
The worst 01 hour: and 28 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW.! GREAT MOVIE & CAST! & CHARLES BRONSON as deaf mutu asst "IGOR'.
It was expertly suspenseful and well made! It had me waiting on the edge of my seat. Would watch again because of how great it was!
House of Wax, known as the first color film in 3D, is actually a pretty effective thriller regardless of the technology. Vincent Price, in one of his first roles as a horror star, plays Henry Jarrod, a wax sculptor whose museum displays are strikingly similar to missing persons in turn of the century New York. If the silliness of the plot can be ignored, the film is worth watching for a surprisingly subdued performance from Price, a few genuinely creepy moments in the second half of the film, some fantastic sets, and enough 3D trickery to keep things interesting.
Still effective after all these year, House of Wax is well acted, unsettling and engrossing. It is amazing how well it still holds up.
Its success helped save the studio. It brought the kind of fame and familiarity that Vincent Price didn't want. Price was a serious leading actor. Until this came along, and changed his life forever.
Vincent Price plays the menacing Professor Henry Jarrod, in a role that would solidify his reputation as the creepiest man in Hollywood. With everything from cancan girls to rubber paddleballs finding their way into the audience, 'House of Wax' takes full advantage of the novel 3-D stereoscopic process. House of Wax was released on Blu-ray 3D in 2013. This is a wonderful, creepy scare-fest with great sets, beautiful colors and strong performances. Vincent Price as Henry Jarrod is both lovable and horrifying as the kind man driven mad. Charles Bronson, in a very early role, is super freaky as Henry's mute and morbid assistant. Carolyn Jones (in her pre-Morticia Addams days) is blond, pretty Cathy, the squeaky opportunist with the heart of gold. Phyllis Kirk is the sensible Sue, a slightly uptight but genuinely believable victim. House of Wax maybe be tame by today's standards, but just think of the time, no one ever thought in a million years of something this horrific. A sick artist taking our corpses or killing us just because we would inspire him, it's a scary thought. Vincent Price added so much horror and beauty to this picture that will never be forgotten once you have seen it.
Classic, campy old flick. Still charms.
It's an OK movie that initially seems headed in one direction before going in a completely different direction. After the fire scene I thought it was going to be a revenge movie about how Vincent Price exacts revenge from Roy Roberts (Burke) and builds a new wax museum. Price as usual gives a great performance, which the movie revolves around. I would have loved to see this in 3-D back in 1953. I was expecting more from this due to how highly it gets ranked in Top All-Time lists.
The best thrilling movie ever made! With the best movie character ever portrayed: Vincent Price as Prof. Henry Jarrod!
