House on Haunted Hill Reviews
Rather short film, 1h10 min (not 1h32 as it says on the site) and very interesting. We follow a real murder party! All guests must stay overnight in the haunted mansion of a rich and eccentric character to collect a large sum of money. The main character, Vincent Price, has an undeniable charisma, as does his beautiful wife (the uncommonly beautiful Carol Ohmart). He's also quite disturbing. From the outside, the mansion is truly magnificent and is a Los Angeles house that actually exists, the Hennis House. It looks like some kind of Mayan temple, which is pretty crazy. The interior is much more commonplace. I think the Cluedo atmosphere of the film is great. It's all about suspicion between Vincent Price and his guests, between him and his wife, and between the guests themselves. I must say, it's quite successful, and gripping, despite the rather abrupt ending. It's a very enjoyable film that hasn't aged a bit, and some scenes are even quite scary if you let yourself be carried along.
House on Haunted Hill (1959). Directed by William Castle, with Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Carolyn Craig and Elisha Cook. The plot involves people spending the night in a house because Frederick Loren needs witnesses because he must kill his wife Annabelle Loren and her lover in self-defense before they kill him. Too bad the wife Annabelle Loren played by Carol Ohmart has a very sexy body, a waste. The brunette Nora Manning played by Carolyn Craig, they want to drive her crazy. Maybe Loren should get his beauty wife hooked on drugs but he didn't want to keep her, he can get another wife anyway. The face well known from several movies in the 온라인카지노추천 in the 80s and 90s of Vincent Price is supposed to have the size of Q.B with 6'4". The romantic interest between jokes and anger between Nora and Lance which contrasts with the Lorens. The best would be Carol Ohmart in a baby doll, going down the stairs. The concept was like Dial M for Murder (1954), but in reverse the wife and the lover want to kill the cuckold who does not let him, maybe this was the fourth wife who kills. Some nonsense like the drop of blood worthy of scientific studies, the old woman who floats, the scene of the rope moved by telekines and the teleportation of Annabelle Loren hanging, the severed head and maybe the pool with acid.
It was a decent movie, much better acting than most modern actors, but the movie is a little bit boring. Its good but not worth a rewatch.
Deliciously goofy yet exceptionally spooky, House on Haunted Hill is a classic in its own right, combing a dry sense of humour with moments of genuine chills. It could be a carnival funhouse; an abode of ghouls and ghosts. William Castle was often better known for his gimmicks more so than for his films, but this haunted house chiller is fabulous, one that greatly benefits from his directorial crassness. Although, sadly, there is no proper way to experience Castle's gimmick of the spooky scary skeleton flying around the room any more. A jumped-up B-movie horror for sure, but it retains its goofy charm with a litany of gimmicky sight gags that, however tame by today's standards, keep their childish appeal. Vincent Price is utterly divine in this film, his withering sarcasm providing many of the film's best lines, I'm making the effort to watch a few of his films this year as I've never really delved into his filmography that well. The rest of the cast all fulfil their roles well and deliver performances that more than match the film's tone, it's dumb, corny and reliant to a ludicrous degree but it not only knows what it is, it loves being what it is. As campy fun, House on Haunted Hill is truly timeless, expertly executed and still delivers its fey thrills and worldly laughs.
Vincent Price and William Castle movies are always fun to watch.
Delightfully devilish fun that continues to feel eerie and innovative.
Um milionário convida cinco estranhos para uma festa na sua mansão, um local conhecido por ser assombrado e pelos crimes que aconteceram lá. Ele oferece US$ 10.000,00 para quem passar a noite até às 8 horas da manhã do dia seguinte. A partir daí, mortes e assombrações passam a atormentar o grupo.
Camp, by today's standards, this film has achieved cult status and is a good classic. There's some brilliant gimmicks, making it good fun to watch with a few mildly scary moments. Horror icon Vincent Price is on top form and delivers some withering sarcasm. It's cheesy, but still entertaining. Directed by William Castlr who was known for his use of gimmicks. He was also the producer of the excellent Rosemarys Baby.
Nice atmospheric house, but not a great movie. The director was focused solely on trying to make a spooky film for teens, and wasn't concerned with how nonsensical the story became. It relied a lot on creepers disappearing into thin air.
One of my favorite of the castle films and of course you can't beat Mr.price
I actually saw the remake first, & while I enjoyed that film, the original's camp nature & OTT acting, not to mention the effectiveness of some of the scares, made me long for the old movie houses where films like this reigned supreme.
Great classic horror movie, brilliant cast and story
Fantastically suspenseful and spooky! The plot is complex and well executed, the scares are great for the time, and everyone dropped great performances. A really fun watch!
6/10. 65/100. | Idk man, I must just write all these Whodunit scripts, bc most of them I know what's going on halfway through the film, or at least half of what's going on. In this case, I called everything. 🤷♂️I literally looked at my dad and told him what I thought was going on with the "murder" and those people's plans, etc like 15 mins or so before it was all revealed to be pretty much exactly like how I said. Like a 90% accuracy.
Spooky atmosphere and pleasant horror gimmicks! William Castle's horror mystery House on Haunted Hill (1959) is one of my favorite whodunit style movies from my childhood watching this on reruns on television. I remember loving Vincent Price in it and it remains one of my top tier Price films after revisiting it. It has horror, mystery, intrigue, clues, and humor. Vincent Price's lead performance as eccentric millionaire and horror fiend Frederick Loren is fantastic. He's charismatically mischievous and playfully morbid in his dark sense of humor. He practically makes House on Haunted Hill a black comedy. Price is deliberately devious looking as he pretends to be sinister in every scene. Carol Ohmart is simply stunning as Price's younger wife Annabelle Loren with her refined dresses and nightgowns alongside her breathtaking blonde beauty. I adored her performance as she pushes back against Price's mentally abusive husband with her own wicked sense of humor. Her dramatic lead actress performance is something else. You are immediately mesmerized by Carol Ohmart. I wish she had acted in more leading lady roles as she goes toe to toe with Vincent Price in his prime and she's just as riveting as him! Elisa Cook Jr. is wonderful as the cowardly and dreading ghost believer Watson Pritchard. His realistic fear in the supernatural is entertaining and his monologues are as fun as Vincent Price's, honestly. I was quite taken with the lovely Julie Mitchum as the frightened writer Ruth Bridgers. Richard Long takes charge as the perceptive hero and attentive protagonist Lance Schroeder. Alan Marshal is fun as the stern Dr. David Trent. Carolyn Craig is excellent as the fearful Nora Manning with her exponentially increasing terror strikes her into hysteria. Lastly, Leona Anderson and Howard Hoffman's eerie spectral performances as Mrs. and Mr. Slydes are very fun. House on Haunted Hill gives way to many And Then There Were None haunted house style movies. House on Haunted Hill sets the standard for haunted house horrors and clearly influenced The Haunting, Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Amityville Horror, The Shining, The Changeling, Beetlejuice, Haunted Honeymoon, Clue, The Others, The Woman in Black, The Conjuring, and The Haunting of Hill House. I really find Castle's dedication to using shadows, darkly lit rooms, and practical props to be very fun. William Castle's House on Haunted Hill locks you in a haunted house and keeps you there for all the neat magic of horror filmmaking from Castle's imagination. Robb White's writing is great as you can imagine each character going to a party for $10,000 and considering each ghostly haunting occurrence in their own manner. The people speak with a modern style and with clear motivations. I find them to be all memorable in their own way. The twists and horrific turns are cleverly written by White. I think most will still be entertained by House on Haunted Hill. Roy V. Livingston's editing is sharp as he quickly cuts from scene to scene with a dreary mood that lures you into a sense of safety. Livingston's cutting keeps House on Haunted Hill moving along as a slow burn into each scare with a swift pace for 75 brief minutes. Carl E. Guthrie's cinematography is remarkable as he uses these long panning shots to reveal scary imagery to sudden jump scares. His wide shots are beautiful, but Guthrie's close-ups are seriously nice for such an old film. Dave Milton's art direction keeps things looking like an old noir with Guthrie's gorgeous black and white cinematography. All the horror aspects seem to fold out from this dreary mansion for an eerie feel. Morris Hoffman finds expensive looking furnishings for this luxurious haunted mansion. Von Dexter's score is unsettling with rising creepy melodies and haunting instrumentation. Ralph Butler and Charles Schelling's sound design is excellent with constant silence into jolts of noises or fading in uncanny noises. They help the horror as much as Von Dexter's music for House on Haunted Hill. Jack Dusick's make-up is great with an ethereal look for each lady and ghost, while the men look presentable and neat. In all, House on Haunted Hill uses every trick in the book, guided by director William Castle, to ensnare you with dread at the next playful scare. It will not scare you out of your mind, but it's a fun time for sure.
The house is not haunted. That in itself is disappointing. But the way Vincent Price and others go about achieving their respective goals is ludicrous. For example, the skeleton controlled by VP, rising from the acid pit is totally unnecessary. He could've just walked out and pushed her in. No cctv back then. Overall it was not scary, and the plot was illogical.
Movie has a creepy, old school, spooky atmosphere, It's a solid movie up till he unsatisfying, abrupt finale.
never scary but always fun
Campy haunted fun is what we need for Halloween especially when it's next to a real tragedy.
