Jason and the Argonauts Reviews
Sure, the film is a little clunky by modern standards but it must be viewed within an historical context. The work by Ray Harryhausen is iconic and must-see for anyone interested in special effects in the period before computer technology was employed.
Jason and the Argonauts offers a vintage epic featuring the stop-motion effects popular for its time. The film follows Jason, played by Todd Armstrong, as he leads a team of heroes on a quest for the Golden Fleece, battling everything from harpies to a towering bronze giant and, of course, the unforgettable skeleton warriors. While the acting, dialogue, and graphics are dated, the film's sheer creativity and epic scale make it a standout in the genre. It's a must-watch for fans of classic cinema and greek mythology. Common for the 60s, female characters like Medea, a powerful sorceress, are unfortunately watered down to one-dimensional eye candy without much agency in the story.
an absolute masterpiece, probably the greatest piece of cinematic history when talos turns his head. 100% recommend.
A ridiculous story pretty well told within the limitations of CGI of those days. It was ok to watch but just wildly dated so hard to rate higher. Watched it in Film4.
There aren't half some miserable so and so's writing these reviews. You have to judge this by the era in which it was made. At the time, the special effects were astonishing. It's comforting viewing for folks of a certain age. Harmless, memorable and terrific entertainment. There are many similar films made many years after this one that can't get anywhere near it. Sunday afternoon, miserable outside and you've got a cold? This is perfect for just that time,…..
An important milestone for special effects and its always fun.
A great motion picture based off of a amazing Greek myth that was made well coming down from music to special effects to even acting I could proudly say I would recommend this movie to a lot of people I know!
Boasting a wonderful cast who really bring the characters and quest to life, the now expectedly memorable Harryhausen special effects, great direction, a classically inspired script with a kinetic sense of propulsion and a stirring musical score, this is one of the finest classic adventure fantasy movies ever made. There are so many wonderful scenes which have stayed with me over the decades and are still stirring despite the many times I have rewatched them. I absolutely adore the classic Sinbad trilogy and consider them, along with Jason and the Argonauts, to be the pinnacle of classic fantasy adventure movies. They were largely responsible for instilling my lifelong interest in and love of the fantasy genre and for that I am forever grateful to them.
A classic, nostalgic movie experience.
A classic. It's stop motion animation at its best (although Clash Of The Titans, which came about 18 years later, is a close second for me). The acting is a bit hokey, but the creature effects are the real selling point for this one. The combination of the live actors and the stop motion animation are incredible, especially for the time. One complaint that I have is that it ends really abruptly. I won't spoil exactly what happens, but it very quickly goes from "How will Jason survive this?" to "Oh, he's fine and it's over".
Incredible, especially for its time! Great stop-action by Ray Harryhausen, the master. Terrifying to my young self. I think it still holds up for chills and awe!
I can't remember whether this way fascinating or terrifying when I watched it as a child. Maybe a little of both.
i enjoyed all rays when i was a kid and im in the process of collecting them. while they may not be up to the effects of now, they are still just as good in their own way
Jason, straight out of Greek mythology, heads to sea to embark on an epic quest with his Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. That's it in a nutshell. The actual plot is actually much more complicated, but in a movie like Jason and the Argonauts, the storyline is almost secondary, as is the dialogue and acting. The only reasons to commit any time to the film are the score by Bernard Herrmann and the remarkable special effects by stop-motion master Ray Harryhausen. Long after forgetting about the horrible performance by Todd Armstrong as Jason and the general silliness of the film, it is the special effects that will linger, most notably the sword-wielding skeletons and the creepy bronze statue of Talos.
Some of these reviews are hilarious and perplexing. They give it one or two stars because of the special effects and claymation? LOL!!!! It's as though it was created in the 2000's, not the 60's. They probably thought Kanye West was gonna boost Paul McCartney's career after performing together. I was 8 yrs old when I saw this. It had been out a decade. It blew me away. Animation has come a long way. I'm surprised no one has done a real remake of this like they have Godzilla and other classics like Clash of the Titans.
Saw it in 1963 when I was 12. Believe me, it was the perfect film for a 12 year old adventure loving kid and remains my favorite Harryhousen film. Do not miss it and make sure (if you have one) to include your adventure loving kid. Make some popcorn and fruit punch and have a blast. May the Gods guide your voyage.
