The Longest Yard Reviews

Feb 6, 2025

A Football Comedy Classic. Biggest complaint is the music is jsut alright and very forgettable overall. But everythign else is good about it overall. It's not gonna win any awards but it tells a fun little story and does so competantly and has a charm to it. Humor is half decent but the story and setup is what makes it clever and memorable. The prison setting and Burt Reynolds are the two best things in this. The team is good. I like and remember certain members more than others but overall I liked the whole group. Kind of gave me The Replacements sort of vibes. The game itself, i'll say this if you don't know football that well you'll be lost half the time but you can figure out enough during the key moments like the score and ending to follow it enough. The football scenes are done pretty well though and it's cool to see 70's style football. During the middle it can feel a bit muddled when it's assembling the team and showing them bonding and getting better. It defintely isn't told in the sharpest way and no one besides Reynolds has much depth to them. But it's a feel good sports movie with a couple laughs with a unique setup. And it does it well. Anyone who is a fan of the director, any actors in this, 70's comedies, or sports movies should check this out.

Brawny and comic tale of a delinquent NFL player coaching scraps to cohesion and victory within prison walls.

50% rating ... Split on this film. Can'r decide if it was entertaining enough, or if it was boring and dragged.

If you can get past the horribly-dated first twenty minutes of The Longest Yard, it's a pretty entertaining sports/prison movie. However, the beginning of the film is tortuous as it tries to draw humor from impaired driving, spousal abuse, assault, and resisting arrest, failing on all counts…and all before the opening credits end. Burt Reynolds plays Paul Crewe, a former star quarterback in the NFL, who finds himself incarcerated and forced to put together a team of inmates to plays against the guards. It's a slog over the first half, but picks up steam as gametime approaches, culminating in an entertaining showdown between the brutal guards and the revenge-minded prisoners. Reynolds is solid in the lead role and Eddie Albert is fantastic as the sadistic warden of the penitentiary. The football action, while often patently absurd, is actually well shot and you'll find yourself cheering for the underdogs before the credits roll.

It's a decently fun football comedy, but it's ultimately lacking both in laughs and football action. This is one of those rare instances where I enjoyed the remake much better than the original. It's still decent though, with a bit of social commentary mixed in.

Reynolds had that charisma and charm that most leading actors lack in this modern era. The man would disappear into this likable character without a large effort and the success fell right on top of him. The film is a fun twist on the standard underdogs sport drama and it grows into one of the more iconic of the genre. I had only seen the Adam Sandler film and that remake actually sticks close to the original. I enjoyed this film and it's a shame it will be overshadowed by the inferior remake.

Reynolds is great. Also good are Conrad, Albert as the bastard warden, Lauter and esp. Hampton as Caretaker. I think he really did break his freakin' neck.

Movie no age well. Misogyny less popular now. Funny movie not funny. Have one laugh in 2 hours.

The Longest Yard isn't bad at all as a football movie or a prison comedy. What The Longest Yard fails to do is give us a story of substance that goes farther than the final game.

Some great football scenes towards the end of the film but overall feels like an over-lengthy OT game.

Entertaining enough but nothing special.

Great film, nowhere near the comedic masterpiece of it's remake, but this films charms in a more serious manor.
