Promised Land Reviews

Aug 17, 2024

It's alright and has a subject with lots of commentary and some interesting characters. It's also got some nice shots every now and than but lots of times it's kind of dull to look at. It's all right all around for the most part. Where this has two huge problems besides the basic direction is in the middle it feels like it gets very muddled. It feels like stuff is just happening and we really lose focus. It's like we know we wanna set up a conspiracy and drama but we just have no idea how set it up cohesively. The twist isn't bad though and thought provoking. It's just not set up very well at all. Finally, this has a NASTY problem where it goes on long rants where it preaches rather than entertains with it's enviormentalist message. The gym scene with Holbrook just explaining facts like we're in enviormental class gets really boring and any drama this builds up just always comes to a screeching halt whenever it does that. It can't get out of it's own way in tha regard. Skip This. Dark Waters (2019) does this same theme this is going for 1000% better.

A movie that at it's roots is a political/environmental tale of big business trying to impose their will on a small town through money and propoganda. A solid enough effort from van Sant but not his best work either.

While the environmental discussion in this movie is fairly simplistic for most of the runtime (essentially both sides lie to rural people "for their own good"), what this movie does really well is point to what is good about local communities like this: Namely that there is a real sense of belonging that exists in towns like the one pictured here. The farms have been in the family for generations, the land is a part of the people and the people are a part of the land. There's tradition and history there. To be sure, a lot of towns like this one are dying. The agricultural way of life is becoming more and more difficult to sustain if you aren't doing it at a very high volume, but what Matt Damon realizes over the course of the movie is that he's working out his own disappointment about the failure of his hometown, pushing his animus at people in similar situations, wondering why, as he says, they "won't just leave." When he's forced to come to terms with the damage he's doing, with the lies and half-truths told to people he's actually learned to care about, it gets to him. This movie takes its time. It's central conflict leaves a lot to be desired, but the value of local cultures and communities, and for me, the ending, make it all work.

Lazy, boring and with nothing to say.

I feel like to really appreciate this movie one has to like other movies that Gus Van Sant and Matt Damon teamed up for. I think this movie is really well done and didn't see the twist coming at all

The performances are easily the best part of Promised Land. Everyone is excellent, and I'm not sure any filmmaker shows such compassion for their characters as Van Sant. It's also hard to argue against the themes of this film. Once again, middle America serves purely as pawns in the political and economical fight between all sides of the arrogant elites. Unfortunately, the incessant preachiness, cloying speechifying, and cliched heroism are a bit too overwhelming.

it was a little boring; it was also confusing, Matt Damon was lying to this people and saying they would be millionaires after the company started drilling. Then another guy shows up in town and claims his land was destroyed by Global Matt's company Now this is crazy he is not from another company he is accurately another Global rep and why I don't know

Formulaic indictment of environmental abuses perpetrated on the unwitting citizenry by evil corporate enterprise. Sincere in it's appearance, but anachronistic in treatment having already been done and better. Good casting although the character development was amateurishly done. Damon has more acting chops than to chew the scenery like this outing.

It was pointed out by Kelly Jane Torrance for the Washington Examiner that the people who backed this film are a subsidiary of one of the oil-rich 'OPEC' nations. The point that Kelly Anne was making is that the film explains in great detail the ills of 'fracking', which the oil-rich nations would like you to believe since it's in their best interest to do so. I'm not suggesting that 'fracking' isn't dangerous, only that it is worth noting who is backing the movie against it. The film should be about the good people of the little Pennsylvania town who stand up to the big, bad, billion-dollar energy company. This would make Matt Damon and Francis McDormand's characters the 'bad guys'. It's not as simple as that. John Krazinski has a nice supporting role that has a nice 11-hour plot twist. It's a decent movie. It's not exactly nonbiased in it's delivery, and Kelly Anne's commentary adds to the discussion.

Excellent movie that offers a realistic look into the world of corporate tactics and behavioral manipulation of the masses. It would seem that the focus was to engage the viewers with the hopes of opening eyes and taking the blinders off. This movie isn't a cheesy film with fight scenes, sex, or cheap thrills but instead offers depth. I can only guess that many of these reviews are from fracking organizations to keep this movie from getting the attention it deserves.

Matt Damon and John Krasinski collaborate on this indie drama that, while well-written, is uncomfortably sappy at times and too strong of a "Hollywood" political message, even when the message is a good one. Gus Van Sant directs it beautifully and Frances McDormand strongly supports the fine performances of the entire cast. Unfortunately, it just comes across, especially at the end, as an ego-driven, spoon-fed, liberal mess.

A great feel good movie with some exceptional acting.

Tricky! While I enjoyed the twist at the end I found most of the movie boring. The inner conflict of Matt's character never fully comes out. It left me unfulfilled.

Jun 26, 2017

This was a good movie with a solid plot line - one reason I didn't give it a full 4 stars was the internal conflict in the Matt Damon character is never expressly demonstrated until he flips. He seems a committed company man until the conversation with Dustin. It doesn't make sense that he had no internal conflict beforehand and flipped right after. Otherwise, this is solid. Very watchable and covers an important topic area for all Americans to understand.

Oversimplifying? Yes. Not cutting to the heart of the matter? Correct. Did I enjoy watching this movie? Hell yes.

A great cast with fun chemistry working with a script that's both preachy and contrived.

Looks and feels like a tv movie. The plot is too easy and even the twist was predictable at the end. Makes me feel like punching them all in the face, them english liars. Could work as tv film for kids I guess.

This was pretty good. Slow moving on some parts.
