Sabrina Reviews

Divertido, inteligente, inovador e muito original. Obra prima da mais alta qualidade, um presente da era de ouro do cinema que envelheceu tão bem como o vinho, sem perder o brilho da novidade.

Surprisingly superficial. Believing that 22 year old girl would be happy with a 40 year old grouch...? Can't understand why a supposedly talented director would touch a project like that.

A delight. Classic romantic comedy helmed by the genius Billy Wilder, and brought to life by three icons of cinema. The luminescence of Audrey Hepburn cannot be contained from her first moments on screen until the credits roll. William Holden as the rakish younger brother has a wonderful blend of smarmy charm, and we get to see some amazing comedy pop. And then there's Bogart. The expertise, the emotion, it's all right there. Highly recommended.

Still great by today's standards. A little creepy how obsessed Sabrina is with the brother, but her arc from the beginning to the end really makes you care about her journey.

So disappointed. One of Bogart's last films and certainly not a Casablanca. To me just a 2 Star effort with a lot of money spent on a not very good movie.

Charming romantic comedy classic.

Um filme com à assinatura do gênio do cinema Billy Wilder. Quem quer ver cinema de verdade tem que assistir a esse clássico.

What a fabulous film. Audrey ... That scene at 1.01:35 where she rotates her head after the kiss from HB, saying 'It's all in the family'. Wow. What woman would do that? Beautiful. How many takes led to that? 2? Audrey ... No wonder William Holden tried so hard to marry her. What a babe.

For someone who swore by god that the remake is better (because of Harrison you know), I was surprised that by the end, I liked the OG version better. Sure I prefer photography to cooking school but Audrey had such strong chemistry with both Humphrey and William and the music, and costumes atmosphere. Oh, Wilder was that director!

A simply wonderful movie.

Audrey Hepburn is perfection! Director Billy Wilder's romantic comedy-drama Sabrina (1954) is quite lovely. Billy Wilder's direction brings a playfulness to the outrageous comedy, while refining scenes with a seriousness for the tender romantic flirting. Wilder was excellent at blending romantic comedy and drama just like in Some Like It Hot. Writers Ernest Lehman, Billy Wilder, and Samuel A. Taylor takes a love triangle and makes you root for the sensible ordinary man of wealth over the frivolous flirty playboy for the young romantic heroine with eyes only for the latter. The jokes are very pleasant and clever with a smart bunch of dialogue that uses business maneuvers as a metaphor for loving gestures. They create a thoughtful, mature romance drama out of tons of romantic comedy scenarios. I found Sabrina actually romantic and caring about personality over wealth or style. Editor Arthur P. Schmidt uses sharp cutting for funny comedic timing and a gentler pacing for the dramatic conversations, so that we can better acquaint ourselves with each person. Sabrina feels far less than 113 minutes with effortless balance between sincere drama and silly comedy. Cinematographer Charles Lang's black and white shots have careful framing and use shadows to obscure Audrey gazing longingly from afar with a stunning majesty. Sabrina is amazingly well shot and thoughtfully crafted. Lang's camera moves with a swiftness and smoothness that is captivating. Audrey Hepburn is magnificent and endearing as Sabrina Fairchild. From the sympathetic poor girl with a crush to a graceful lady with a romantic heart and classy elegance. Hepburn plays humor with a casual skill as well as devastating tearful goodbyes as Sabrina decides whom she truly loves. Hepburn is lovely with an adorable whimsy and gentle sorrow that's quite touching. Sabrina is a delightful picture with a charming lead performance from iconic screen actress Audrey Hepburn. Humphrey Bogart is brilliant and mature as the serious CEO Linus Larrabee. His wealthy businessman feels increasingly romantic, torn, and considerate as the lovable love interest for Audrey. Their conversations feel real and empathetic towards each other's feelings. William Holden is funny as the sleazy playboy David Larrabee with his lackadaisical manner. Walter Hampden is hysterical as the constantly cigar smoking and drinking father Oliver Larrabee. Martha Hyer is fun and gorgeous as David's lovely fiancée Elizabeth Tyson. John Williams is excellent as Sabrina's cautious and concerned chauffeur father Thomas Fairchild. Joan Vohs is unbelievably annoying as the incessantly giggling flirt Gretchen Van Horn. Marcel Dalio's gentleman Baron St. Fontanel is very sweet and perceptive as Sabrina's Parisian friend. Marcel Hillaire is hilarious as Sabrina's French culinary instructor The Professor. Nella Walker is great as David's disapproving mother Maude Larrabee. Art direction by Hal Pereira and Walter H. Tyler uses shadows with a sweeping romantic feeling. They focus on Audrey's eyes, lush gardens, and large manors. Set decorators Sam Comer and Ray Moyer adorn the lavish sets with tons of gadgets for Bogart and drinks galore for Holden. Choreographer Eugene Loring ensures Audrey Hepburns gets slow and meaningly dances with both Bogart and Holden, so that the viewer can realistically believe she could fall for these ancient men. Composer Friedrich Hollaender creates a lovely film score that really brings in "La Vie en Rose" quite often as Audrey's theme. She even sings a version in a very cute and memorable scene with Bogart. Sound designers John Cope and Harold Lewis add glass crunching, footsteps tapping, and voices hollering with a very clear and distinct sound mix. Costume designers Edith Head and Hubert de Givenchy craft these mesmerizing dresses and jackets for Audrey Hepburn's modern style. They create huge evening gowns to practical black jumpsuits and cute blouses that all look chic on Audrey. It's easy to see why Sabrina is notable for its fashion style. Wally Westmore's short pixie haircut fits Audrey's tomboy personality and cute ladylike quirkiness. In conclusion, Sabrina is a wonderfully made and acted film that I'll enjoy revisiting again one day. Audrey Hepburn is delightful and endearing, while Humphrey Bogart surprises with a charmingly romantic and serious dramatic performance.

An interesting look into the world of high finance in the fifties. Hepburn is charming, but the script is not convincing, nor funny.

Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, Billie Wilder… By today's standards, that would be very mainstream, and judging the movie by the names in it would be a somewhat shallow thing to do. But with Sabrina, the names live up exactly to expectations. There may be times where chemistry lacks between Bogart and Hepburn, but that is opposed with an immoderate amount of humor. The result is satisfactory.

Awesome movie! Delightful! Clothes were spectacular!

At times laugh out loud funny, the film's uneven tone betrays the fact the script was constantly being doctored on set. There are some neat and surreal passages of satire, notably involving Bogart's obsession with new plastics, mixed with less sophisticated broader comedy. Hepburn radiates on screen, but her performance is sometimes lacking in finesse. Holden has fun as Bogart's playboy brother, whilst his character is lacking in sufficient charm to fully convince. Lavish production values and crisp photography add gloss and Bogart is excellent, cast against type as a single-minded businessman demonstrating a skill for comic timing and one-liners.

Did you catch the requests for tickets to The Seven Year Itch? Billy Wilder wouldn't adapt that stage play for the big screen until the following year, but it seems he got some advance marketing into the script for Sabrina. Among the Wilder films with name recognition and a vaunted critical reputation, Sabrina seems like one of the weaker ones; it's not that the film is patently bad, it's just light. The film starts off in a rather dark place with an attempted suicide from a teenage girl, but quickly washes its hands of any of those emotional consequences by introducing a comedic montage of a French cooking school and then the film's main dynamic, a love triangle between Audrey Hepburn's Sabrina and two upper-crust brothers, the carefree David (William Holden) and Linus (Bogart, who was almost 55 years old to Hepburn's 26 when this film was released). With relationships that seem ripe for a dash of class conflict or at least some emotional honesty among haughty elites, the film instead opts for a far less weighty approach to its story, even taking away much of the battle for Sabrina's affections; David gets written almost completely out of the story with little protest, and the narrative instead becomes about Bogie shedding a cold exterior for love. The chemistry between the leads isn't much to write home about, though the intentional casting against type for Bogart gives the film some distinctiveness. There is some fun dialogue, solid direction, and a very good cast, but Sabrina resolves whatever conflict it has a bit too easily and doesn't replace it with enough character development or charm to feel like one of the better films from the acclaimed Billy Wilder. A charming film starring the beautiful Audrey Hepburn that generates a few laughs and an appreciation for costume design. But it's difficult to overlook the age gap between her and Humphrey Bogart.

60% rating. Pretty decent romance movie, but I had troubles with the real life age difference between Hepburn & Bogart. Made it seem less believable.

Hasn’t aged well, and was not good to begin with. The older brother heavily hitting on Sabrina as a plot to steal her from younger brother, get rid of her, and save the family name? Extremely creepy and gross. Also predictable and eye-roll worthy after the first 15 minutes. No charm in this, just absurd, awkward, and icky.

Charming, nostalgic but not too much and a fine balance between comedic moments and emotional scenes, make Sabrina an enjoyable film from director Billy Wilder.
