101 Reykjavik Reviews

Jul 5, 2021

Hlynur is a twenty-five-year-old man who has issues coming to terms with adulthood and has difficulty corralling his sexual impulses. When he winds up having sex with what turns out to be his mother's lesbian partner, things get complicated. The premise of 101 Reykjavik is interesting and promising, but the film unfortunately falls flat due to a weak script. The dialogue is trite and juvenile, resulting in raised eyebrows and excessive wincing instead of the intended laughs. The script also succumbs to a surplus of scenes that seem to have no clear purpose, unusual for a film that is barely eighty minutes long. For example, in one scene, a group of children target a pizza delivery man with fireworks. It doesn't create laughs, advance the story, or develop character – it is simply pointless. Victoria Abril is charming as Lola, the lesbian lover, and the locales are periodically captivating, but the film, on the whole, is a frustrating exercise in what could have been.

An Icelandic nihilist meets a bubby and sexual Spaniard: funny stuff happens. Amusing, entertaining and pop. I liked it

Decent little Icelandic comedy-drama. I did not find the main character terribly likable, though. He mostly seemed whiny to me and unsympathetic, but neither was he an object of scorn. Mark this one down as "OK, though it didn't quite work for me"

Not the worst film I've ever seen, but it gets impressively close. A film that would be completely dismissed if it had been made in the states or in the UK gets special attention and critical love simply because it depicts a city and culture not many people are familiar with. I felt like I was watching the Nordic equivalent of those junky truck stop DVD movies.

Our Daily Free Stream: 101 Reykjavik (engl. subt. + germ. subt.)

a nice little comedy coming for the cold land. It's really well done, darkly funny & the cast is awesome. great little movie.

Something of an Icelandic equivalent to 'Human Traffic', the party scenes work fairly well but once the story moves from there it really loses its way. Not convincingly written enough to carry the topics it is attempting to broach.

An amusing comedy about complicated relationships. Highly recommended for a spot of psychoanalysis.

A very bleak, funny Icelandic comedy that almost falls apart but just about manages to keep it together.

One of my favorite movies. Such a fun and crazy joy-ride. And the actors deliver phenomenal performances.

A very funny, almost deadpan Icelandic/British co-production about a 30 something slacker living with his mother and an Italian female lodger who spends his days surfing for porn and having 'just one' drink at the local club every weekend. How's that for distinctiveness? Thrown into the mix is a beautifully played "coming out" that has repercussions for said slacker, Hlynur, his feelings of worth (he doesn't try to look for work or 'better himself' - what's the point?) and his general apathetic attitude. An adaptation of a cultish novel, Baltasar Kormakur has made an incredibly warm film in a freezing cold city that has sex, heart, laughs and truth. There are no giant lessons learned or hurdles leapt over, merely small realisations and acknowledgments made. There is lots to admire here; the idiosyncratic writing, the superb performances (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason is all sorts of delightful man-child geekiness - adorable and stubborn in an awkward fuzzy package), the Almodovar-esque characters and the Damon Albarn co-written soundtrack.

I really enjoyed watching this, also it's worth to mention that Damon Albarn made soundtrack. :)

the hero of this movie wants to accomplish nothing in life, and the creator of this film pretty much achieves that... if that is a comedy then why they weren't any jokes in it? Victoria Abril, who was the hottest lesbian ever as Loli in "Gazon maudit' is a huge disappointment as Lola... perhaps the english language is not for her... the only thing positive message in the movie comes from the failed suicide attempt scene... a failure uplifts your spirit ...you see life more lightly

Quirky movie but a good one. Think I would have enjoyed it more if the subtitles would have been matched up better to the movie. It was difficult at times to figure out who was saying what. Interesting look into Icelandic life and how they live. Catch this flick if you come across it.
