Shivers Reviews
🌀COLLECTION RATING 86%
Uneven acting and poor tech credits negatively affect this early Cronenberg effort. But, there is no denying you're in the hands of a future filmmaking great.
One of my cherished favorites......hot chicks great actors retro decor.....I don't know how you beat this sexy dystopian tale of a doomed Canadian Apartment
awful garbage ........
Quite good thrash, acting is not great but sufficient for this type.
Nowhere near the 85% so-called "critics" gave it. This film is extremely rapey and has several very strange, unnecessary child molestation scenes with no real rhyme or reason to it. In typical weird Indy fashion with of course the Cronenberg shock effect. Glad his films got much better after this one.
Orgy Zombie film. Fairly good but not great. The plot keep me interested through but it never really grab me in a horror sense. I think it probably could have been better and more engaging with a few changes, but it wasn't terrible as is. Just more of a good B film than actually thoughtful movie. I'd recommend for any horror films, or even slasher/genre fans. If your not a hardcore though probably a skip.
Like other directors in their "first feature," Cronenberg put on the table how he would define the horror genre in his own words. The result, in addition to being visceral, is quite satisfactory and, incidentally, is a destructive criticism of life in condominiums.
With Shivers, David Cronenberg explores the difficult subject of parasite-induced sexual violence. This requires a delicate balance that he maintains reasonably well. This film, his third and at the time longest, demonstrates how Cronenberg is so effective at body horror. He grosses you out while freaking you out. Most imitators only succeed at the former. Fans of his next film, Rabid, will notice similarities in style, tone, and key film elements. Still, the difficult subject matter means that, while I enjoyed the film and found it interesting, I would only watch it again under certain circumstances.
Shivers utilizza un'ottima regia ed una trama semplice ma efficace per colpire lo spettatore
You watch it for the same reason you watch an auto accident. Both may leave you feeling a little sick.
Cronenberg's Shivers is quite the disturbing film. Sure, it hasn't aged well, but some of the scenes really pushed the boundaries back then (1975) and there is no doubting the influence this film has had on horror / SciFi movies that followed. Not for the faint hearted but one to watch to appreciate Cronenberg's unique and some would say ground-breaking style and vision.
Shivers is a downright gritty film. While it was clearly made on a limited budget, Cronenberg's ability to make strong impressions comes through in a jolly balance of gratuitous nudity and unnerving imagery.
Ok movie, I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it. It keeps you wondering what’s next.
David Cronenberg's first adult horror, commenting on social morals disguising as a crude horror movie. No doubt, action and violence very effective, but rated R for lots of inappropriate, offensive violence and attacks. Leaves the viewer uncomfortable as a voyeur, too many plot holes to make any sense. Muted downbeat ending. David's follow up movie, Rabid 1977 was a virtual remake
I am not entirely sure what I was expecting from this film but whatever it was this film didn't even come close. My biggest problem was that considering this was a horror film there was a distinct lack of fear. There was plenty of nudity and some rather minging scenes involving a little parasite that looked like a penis. You could see the shock sequences coming a mile off but there was no tension building up so they weren't as shocking as they should be. The idea was good for the story but I think that it was poorly executed. Thankfully it is a short film. The pace is really pedestrian in places from the lack of character development. So much so that you just want the guys to all get got by the parasite. Overall what you would expect from David Cronenberg's first major film – unpolished and full of bizarre scenes that are meant to shock the audience's morals.
The idea behind the movie was intelligent but the movie's execution was poor. Badly acted, badly filmed, slow amateurish movie on too small a scale. The infecting creature was too large and slow-moving to be convincing. It could all have been done much better, to make a better film.
Filmmaker David Cronenberg is incredible. A truly imaginative and original work by him, this is one of his earliest works. It's not common to see films like this anymore. Shivers will not disappoint you if you're a fan of Cronenberg!!!.
Lousy, stiff acting. The actors in this film all sound ike they are reciting lines from a script. The "violence" is poorly choreographed and looks like it was improvised. Overall, a rough start for Mr. Cronenberg.
Shivers' repetitious plot and one-dimensional characters make it feel overlong at only 87 minutes. Still, it contains a genuinely original idea competently told and serves as a early showcase for Cronenberg's "body horror" style.
